In a long career, Mr. Dent worked in many parts of the world, specialising in floods and droughts. For a time, he was the World Meteorology Organisation Chief Technical Advisor to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in Bangladesh. The article was initially published in the British Hydrological Society journal Circulation, but was quickly withdrawn. Excerpt from the cancelled paper Quote Over the last 15 years, I have resigned from two national institutions which have incorporated climate change hypotheses into rigid policy statements. This situation could so easily escalate to the dystopian future depicted in the recently published novel The Denial by Ross Clark. Like all the ramifications and issues relating to Covid, the danger comes when theoretical projections provide the basis of legislation, or define the stance of particular organisations, while the media presentations rely on throw-away lines and virtue-signalling in reporting. I can see similar dangers arising from so-called ‘environmental’ policies, such as ceasing river dredging and weed clearance, ‘rewilding’ and abandoning land and road drainage maintenance. Ultimately we could find ourselves regressing to medieval conditions, where roads and marshy areas become impassable in the winter months. Second paragraph reminds me of the mismanagement of the Somerset Levels with regard to flooding in the early-to-mid 2010s. Edited April 1, 2022 by sunday
Mikel2 Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 Undeniable sign of global warming. No snow would also have been proof of the same.
sunday Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 That is a higher area in the mountains of central Spain. Not as high as Denver, but still subjected to crazy weather.

DB Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 It's an interesting subject (mean sea level rise), and rather complex. It should come as no surprise that the science (actual science) has almost certainly changed since 1988, and certainly the ability to model the complexity of heat exchange into the oceans (and the rate of decline in grounded ice, along with measures of exactly how much of that there is) are not the same as they were back then. You will still see claims that the Maldives will disappear beneath the waves, but it seems that the rate of increase in mean sea level has historically not been the 1cm per year predicted in the article cited, but apparently has averaged about 1/3rd that. Back in the 80s, measurements were generally spare data points recorded by tidal gauges. Now we have satellite based altimetric measurements that are both much higher density and higher precision. The claim is that the sea level rises are now approaching the rates claimed back in the 80s, but they're also a little more conservative about dates, too, with between a 50 and 90% chance that the Maldives will be inundated by 2100. If you can get past the "due to climate change" spin in the wikipedia article, I think it covers the topic well enough.

rmgill Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 DB, the problem is hysterical predictions of impending doom are a common climate refrain. That we have more data that shows how that was overblown is precisely the point.
MiloMorai Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 Climate Change - The Facts Scientists explore the impact of climate change and what could happen if global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees. rmgill Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 (edited) Milo, why are you still here? Why haven't you abandoned your modern lifestyle for a carbon negative hunter gatherer life style? You believe this climate stuff, then go live on the tundra of Canada and eat raw seal meat. Seriously, if you really do you need to practice what you preach. Reduce your carbon foot print to a negative value. Edited April 29, 2022 by rmgill

If you were seriously concerned about climate change and changing the minds of others, maybe you should insult less. You post an "all the facts" video from a slanted source (and you seem to be right their target demographic - people who want to feel smug about how they got it that climate change is a big threat), and when someone responds with a simple graphic that shows global temperatures over a time scale of millions of years, rather than engage with those facts you switch to ad hominem. Besides, pretty much everbody who claims to be concerned about climate change demonstrably doesn't act like they actually are. And acts speak more than words. Al Gore makes millions predicting the impending doom of rising sea levels, then invests those millions in beach front property. Climate activists all go "carbon bad", fill their Instagram accounts with photos of beautiful nature from Tanzania, Phuket, their Antarctic cruise - and fly thousands of them to South Africa to protest at a summit where tens of thousands of climate change bureaucrats in air-conditioned conference centers discuss how to reedirect tax money flows. Hollywood actors make proud selfies with climate change bad T-shirts ... on board of private jets. Susan Sarandon has her driver stop the stretch limo at the Occupy Wall Street curbside, so she can protest with the 99%. Justin Trudeau emotes about all the bad that has been done to the First Nations and the horrors of cultural appropriation, then wears redface and a feather crown at some costume party. I don't mind the hypocrisy. I don't mind that they think we're all gullible fools. What irks me is that often enough they are right about that, particularly with smug people congratulating themselves how "they get it" while, unfortunately, the world is ruled by carbon-addict Neanderthals who refuse to change their way of life before the smug climate activists have to do it. You want others to change their minds and their behavior, you want other people's money - but you do nothing to change their minds. Insults are not an argument. They are counterproductive. And it's nothing that you don't know, so it seems like you don't actually want to change anything. If you really believed that Climate Change was an existential threat, you'd have to make a serious effort to change minds and to change your style of living. But you demonstrably don't - so why should anyone here believe you?

It's no big surprise that the largest element of the green movement also tend on the Marxist Leninist slant, if not the Maoist slant. That so many are in fact critical of human existence in and of itself has a simple solition. Those marxist Leninists need to minimize THEIR impact. But they never do. They want luxuries, they want medicine, they want plastic products and things that are products of an energy sector that is prolific, constant and in great supply. So, once again, put your money where you mouth is. Go live on a river somewhere, farm your food by hand, don't use mined copper for a generator, don't use solar panels (also mined and petrochemical derived semiconductors), don't use a wind generator, knap your flints to make cutting implements, mine what little metal you can from the surface exposed materials and don't burn anything. Pony up or shut up.
