In Virginia Tech, we had 32 folks killed and just as many wounded with an individual wielding two handguns. In Texas nearly two decades back, a gunman killed about 24 folks inside a restaurant with just two handguns. It's very much possible to do a tremendous amount of damage with just a handgun.

 

This appears to be the case here. Now nine dead plus the shooter who appears to have killed himself, 21 injured to various degrees, all in the short time before police showed up. Perpetrator an 18-year-old German-Iranian dual citizen from Munich armed with a pistol. No definite information on his motivation beyond his lament on video that he was feeling disrespected and had grown up on basic welfare, or how he got the gun yet.

 

A plaincloth police patrol was first to respond and traded shots with him, but then lost him (this seems to have been at the parking garage where he got into that shouting match; there is video of two cops in reflective "POLIZEI" vests sprinting across the open ground into the garage, one with an MP 5). All other reports on more shooters and more shootings turned out to be jittery nerves. A total of 2,300 officers were deployed, including GSG 9 and the new mid-level BFE+ of Federal Police stood up after the Paris attacks. Overall, authorities seem to have handled the situation well, particularly on the mass communications side, and the public pulled along.

 

On the mechanical political side, I have to judge this the least worst type of perpetrator. If he had been a recent immigrant, the screams on the right would have been ear-splitting. If he had been a domestic neo-Nazi, we would never have heard the end of it from the left. I suspect he didn't own that gun legally, so we might avoid more gun-ban hysterics, too; and cynically speaking, it should show the nonsense of it, too. As it is, the right might rumble a bit about murderous Muslims, and the left about the austerity of basic welfare driving poor people to despair, but unless some unexpected information emerges on him, he seems too little of a pin-up for either side.

As an aside, it will be interesting to see how the IS will square their reflexive claim of ownership with the fact that their alleged "soldier of Allah" was likely a Shia heretic.

Seriously, another disaffected youth from the wrong side of the tracks in a country where he should have felt that he had opportunities, instead this guy takes the worst option. His own fault, no-one else's.

Eight of his victims were between 14 and 21, two of them Kosovars, with the ninth a 45-year-old female. There are reports he originally opened fire in that McDonald's playground, and of a Facebook post advertizing free meals at the restaurant today, but no official confirmation I've seen. 16 remain hospitalized with three in serious condition. Another press conference to be held soon, and Chancellor Merkel to make a statement at 1430.

David S. was still a pupil and the search of his home resulted in materials about amok runs. No trace of jihad or islam. Among others a book named "Amok- why pupils kill"

 

Looks like he killed himself and the police did not kill him, although there was a brief exchange with a patrol at first. Only one wound in the head, left side. He was left handed. So looks very much like suicide. Looks like he has been in treatment for some form of depression.

 

 

He had a Glock 17 with the numbers filed off and 300 cartridges in his rucksack. At the moment they work to make the number visible again.

 

 

They are still looking through his computer.

Media report a 14-year-old girl by name of Armela Segashi and a 21-year-old (but see below) named Dijamant Zabergja based upon internet posts by relatives.

 

From the current press conference: Two 13- and three 14-year-olds, one 17-, one 19-, one 20- and one 45-year-old, all from Munich. Unclear whether the perpetrator had a personal relation to any of them, or was acting out of hate for other ethnicities. Bodies were found at the McDonald's, in the street and the mall. Information that he hacked a Facebook account to lure victims into the restaurant with an advertizement for free meals are still being investigated.

Guy was a school student without a police record who had allegedly been treated for depression. No information yet whether he was under medication or drugs during the act, nor whether he was playing violent videogames. No evidence of radicalism found in his home where he lived with his parents and a brother, but books about school shootings etc.; left no note.

Armed with a 9 mm Glock with serial number filed off and 300 rounds. No info yet how he got it; certainly not legally, since after some school shootings in the past, age for posession of big-bore handguns was raised to 21, and he had no weapons permit at all. Police fired at him at the parking garage but did not hit him. Found with a single point-blank gunshot wound to the left of his head, which matches him being left-handed.

His computer and social circle are currently being checked out. The parents are in no condition for questioning right now. There have been no arrests. 4,310 emergency calls were received between 1800 and 0000 hours yesterday, the usual for four days in Munich.

Refinement: Only four of the injured have gunshot wounds, the others seem to have mostly got hurt in the panic, something I had suspected would make for part of the cases.

 

And the "three shooters with long guns" bit seems to be based upon people reporting plainclothes police officers as such.

Full name now given as Ali David Sonboly, which sounds more regular. There are suggestions he was bullied by Arabs and Turks in school, and there are three Turks among the victims. The shout of "fucking Turks" can be heard in the garage video, though it's not quite clear from whom.

Yep serious problem. But trustworthy interpreters sadly do not grow on trees. Especially for obscure dialects or languages.
