BansheeOne Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Another train stabbing. Suspect a 33-year-old stateless Palestinian with a history of violence and sexual assault who had actually just been released from remand a week earlier. Quote Germany: 2 killed, several injured in train knife attack 4 hours ago Two people have been killed and seven wounded in a knife attack on a train in Germany. The attack took place in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein that borders Denmark. A young man is in police custody. A man with a knife killed two people and wounded seven more on a regional train running from Kiel to Hamburg on Wednesday. A suspect was arrested at a small train station in Brokstedt soon after the crime. The state of Schleswig-Holstein's interior minister, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, rushed to the scene soon after being informed of the news. Speaking to reporters in Brokstedt on Wednesday evening, she said that the suspect was a stateless man from the Palestinian territories. Reports on the young man's age varied slightly in the hours following the attack. But police said a 33-year-old suspect had been taken to hospital while under arrest to treat minor injuries. Three of those wounded were seriously hurt, four suffered minor injuries. [...] What else do we know so far? Police said the attack took place as the train was approaching the Brokstedt station, a small community of around 2,000 people north of Hamburg and south of Kiel. A suspect was arrested when the train reached Brokstedt station. Multiple travelers had called the emergency services from the train. Police later said that three passengers had eventually managed to restrain the suspected attacker on board, and that police arrived at the scene with him under their control. Roughly 70 passengers were aboard the train in total. Police took statements from them at a site nearby. The station was closed to allow emergency services and forensic teams to work on site. Rail providers reported disruptions in the area as a result. According to police, further details remained elusive around two hours after the attack. Neither suspected motives or reasons for the attacker's actions, nor the condition of those injured was entirely clear. Police said the suspect was not thought to have been on any extremist watch lists, based on preliminary checks. The dpa news agency also reported, but this time citing security sources speaking off the record, that the man was exhibiting signs of a pyschiatric illness. One dead (reportedly a teacher), six critically, three severely and several lightly injured. Driver suffered a head injury and was detained by bystanders before taken into police custody. He was previously known to police, but not as an extremist, and a note found in the car is allegedly not political. The scene is close to the site of the Christmas market truck attack from a couple years ago though, and some sort of copycat effect may be suspected. Quote Psychiatric sentence for man who drove car into Berlin crowd 1 hour ago A man who drove a car into a crowd of schoolchildren in central Berlin last year has been deemed not criminally culpable because of paranoid schizophrenia. He was sentenced to psychiatric internment. A court in Berlin on Friday sentenced a man to long-term psychiatric care after he drove a car into a crowd of pedestrians in the German capital last June. The 30-year-old's driving license was also permanently revoked. An elementary schoolteacher was killed in the attack on the Kurfürstendamm street. Another teacher and 11 pupils were among the 17 people wounded, as was another teenage girl. Suspect a paranoid schizophrenic The prosecution agreed in its closing arguments earlier this week to settle for psychiatric internment, after a commission found the German citizen, originally from Armenia, was a longstanding paranoid schizophrenic who could not be found criminally culpable, and who had not taken his medication on the day of the crime. [...] https://www.dw.com/en/germany-psychiatric-sentence-for-man-who-drove-car-into-berlin-crowd/a-65396367 Four people were also stabbed at a Duisburg gym this week, with one in very critical condition. This doesn't seem to be a typical rampage though rather than an escalated altercation between the attacker and one or several of the victims, while others might have gotten in the way as he fled. Suspect is still at large.
BansheeOne Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 In fact after a 26-year-old Syrian was apprehended as a suspect in the Duisburg stabbing mentioned above, the incident was rapidly re-judged as first a possible indiscriminate rampage after all, then a possible terrorist act based upon Islamist links found when searching his smartphone etc. At least anti-terror prosecutors have now taken over the case.

BansheeOne Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Or maybe he's just a bog standard serial killer. Quote Duisburg gym stabbing suspect linked to earlier killing 6 minutes ago The 26-year-old suspect behind an attack in Duisburg that seriously injured four people is now also under investigation for a prior murder in the same city. Prosecutors in the German city of Düsseldorf said on Thursday that the suspect in a stabbing at a fitness studio the nearby city of Duisburg could be linked to an earlier murder. In a statement, officials said the attack also took place in Duisburg in the early hours of April 9 and that DNA in blood from the scene had been linked to the suspect's shoes. In the incident, a 35-year-old man received multiple stab wounds and died hours later. The suspect is a 26-year-old Syrian, whom authorities have identified as M.D. due to German privacy rules protecting the identity of suspects. He was arrested at his apartment in Duisburg on Sunday, after being sought for the April 18 attack in the fitness studio in which four people were seriously injured. The night of the attack, M.D. entered the fitness studio and proceeded to the locker room, where he carried out stabbings and then calmly left the building, prosecutors said. BansheeOne Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 Not really a rampage, but possibly a trap for first responders with a large number injured, several critically with severe burns. Started with a welfare check at the apartment of an old lady where the mailbox was overflowing; since her son, also registered at the address, had a prior record for violence, quite a lot of police officers went along with some firefighters. Per reports, the 57-year-old son when opening the door immediately lit a piece of cloth or similar, which resulted in a fireball combustion; makes it sound like he had filled the rooms with gas. He suffered the most severe injuries himself. The body of a woman who had been dead for some time, possibly the mother, was also found. Quote Germany: Suspect arrested after blast at high-rise building Published 19 hours ago | last updated 15 hours ago Over 20 police officers and several firefighters were injured in a blast at an apartment tower in Ratingen. Authorities have detained one suspect and recovered a body from the flat. German police have detained a suspect in connection with an explosion at a residential building that injured dozens of first responders on Thursday. Before the blast, police had been called to the building to assist a person supposedly in distress. When emergency services and police arrived at the suspect's apartment, a blast went off as they opened the door. The authorities are currently looking into what triggered the explosion. "Further investigations must show whether it is attempted manslaughter or attempted murder and in how many cases," Düsseldorf public prosecutors said. Police later stormed the apartment, arrested the man thought to have made the emergency call, and found the body of a dead woman inside. The incident took place in the western German city of Ratingen, located outside of Düsseldorf. Man arrested with injuries A police spokeswoman at the scene said the suspect was a 57-year-old man, who was living in the flat from which the explosion came. He was injured, but the spokeswoman she said she could not comment on whether his injuries were sustained before or during his arrest. Police also did not provide details on the identity of the dead woman found inside the apartment and the circumstances of her death. Two officers and three firefighters sustained life-threatening injuries in the blast. Four firefighters were seriously injured and 22 police officers suffered minor injuries, police said. BansheeOne Posted May 13, 2023 Posted May 13, 2023 16 hours ago, R011 said: Twenty cops? Did they think they wer4e dealing with the Winter Soldier or something? As it's reported now, 21 stated to have been lightly injured were SEK officers who responded to the initial incident and afterwards were checked for possible smoke inhalation within the burning apartment, but cleared. The original responders were just two police officers, who went because the suspect had prior penal orders for three counts of battery and an open warrant for failing to pay a fine which police had attempted to serve in vain at the address some days before already; and seven firefighters and EMTs to open the door and check upon the old lady which the house administrator was worried about. The affair is just getting worse though. Per recent reports, the suspect threw a container of petrol and possibly other accelerants, which was recovered later (so it was not a proper molotov cocktail as also suggested). A lot more gas was stored inside, and it's assumed there was a vapor deflagration. Unclear whether he set an additional fire inside as originally stated before he was overwhelmed; as Ssnake notes, later reports don't talk of him suffering "most severe" rather than just light injuries anymore. The two cops and five of the fire personnel suffered burns of up to 40 (initially reported as 80) percent of their skin area. They were distributed to several burn wards and put into artificial coma. Additionally, a person on the second floor of the building in need of hourly care didn't get it during the operation and was later found dead. The corpse found in the suspect's apartment assumed to be that of his mother had probably been dead for weeks and hasn't been identified so far. Since one officer's duty gun was missing after the attack, the SEK was called in and snipers deployed; the gun was later found in the apartment, but wasn't used by the suspect. He is stated to have been a bit of a prepper, as evidenced by his gas stocks, also lots of toilet paper etc. Some weapons announced to have been found were just a couple knifes, daggers and a blank-firing gun though. There have been suggestions his social media history shows an affiliation with the anti-COVID etc. conspiracy crowd, but that might be a mixup. He has been declared legally sane after intitial psychiatric evolution, anyway.
BansheeOne Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 Three days later, two remain in critical condition, though one of eight victims previously in intensive care was discharged to a regular ward. The suspect isn't talking, however various written notes found in the apartment suggest he pretty much hated everything - state, church, employment agency, COVID vaccinations, what have you. As noted before, a police officer had rung at the door a few days earlier to serve an arrest warrant because the guy hadn't paid a fine for the most recent of three battery charges, but noone opened. He had built a barricade of beverage crates behind the door and was clearly prepared to attack anyone who came in. Even after an autopsy, it's still not entirely clear that the dead body found inside was his mother's, though that remains the assumption.

Came to Germany in 2015 to evade the draft in Syria, tried to integrate but couldn't keep a job and self-radicalized via internet. First stabbed a 35-year-old celebrating in the street at night with a group to death nine days before the gym attack, intending to kill the entire group, but broke off when he heard sirens. Similar happened at the gym. He claims he wanted to die a martyr and waited for police at home with his knife, but they sent in a dog which took him down. The courtroom chuckled at that. Meanwhile on the car rampager front, a 22-year-old former AfD member is on trial in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, for driving his pickup into a group of left-wing protesters against a party event in the town of Henstedt-Ulzburg three years ago, injuring one. He claims to have acted in self-defense after he and some friends mingled with the protesters, but were recognized and followed to their car, and he saw one of them being beat up. The latter was not confirmed by police also on the scene though, and driving on the pedestrian walk for 100 meters was not quite accepted as self defense. Neither was the local AfD chapter head convinced of the story, who suggested to the guy that he leave the party ASAP. Finally, not quite a rampage either, but Hamburg airport has been closed since last evening after a Turkish-speaking man allegedly kidnapped his daughter from her mother in an apparent custody fight, broke through an airport gate in his car, fired two shots and threw two incendary bottles, then parked under a Turkish Airlines plane getting ready to depart. The aircraft was evacuated, and police are currently negotiating with the suspect.
BansheeOne Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 Hamburg suspect left the car with his daughter and had himself detained with no resistance after 18 hours of negotiations.

This guy is now on trial in Düsseldorf for nine counts of attempted murder. He's still not talking, but one of the two first responding police officers and various medical experts have testified, and bodycam video was introduced. As stated previously, the intial duo knocked on the apartment door after getting a call about the overflowing mailbox and finding that the guy had an open arrest warrant for battery, but got no response. They asked the neighbors if they could take a look into the apartment windows from their balcony, but they refused because they were afraid of the guy and thought he was crazy. So they called the fire department to open the door, which arrived with a squad of seven. They took out the lock, but ultimately had to remove a window pane in the door to find the corridor behind blocked by a stack of water bottle crates. They also noted a stench of decomposition. As a they started clearing the barricade, the suspect appeared behind and ignited a bucket of about six liters of petrol with a burning piece of cloth. The female police officer was worst hit, suffering almost 70 percent of her skin burned on her back and spending five months in intensive car, still hardly able to move. The partly skeletonized body found in a wheelchar seems to have been established to be the suspect's mother's, but the cause of death remains unclear due to the state of decomposition and fire effects. There may have been cuts in some places, but it couldn't even be determined whether those would have been pre- or post-mortem. A verdict in the trial is expected for January.
BansheeOne Posted December 17, 2023 Posted December 17, 2023 Trial ended early with a verdict of life and particular graveness of guilt this week, ruling out early release after 15 years. It's unusual when noone got actually killed, but as the judge noted, that was just due to plain luck.

The court saw no intention to kill and no political motive, and acknowledged that he was excited and overwhelmed when he saw what they thought established was a friend getting hit in the face, though the means to help him he employed were excessive. Private co-plaintiffs may appeal the verdict, and additional civil action is pending.
