Reportedly some police - army "clashes" (though remains to be seen how serious). TBH do not believe it will succeed, if they do not have Erdogan by now. He has a large popular support, so with modern mass social media he can do Yeltsin easily.

On Al Jazeera just heard Erdogan saying "this country cannot be run from Pennsylvania".

An adversary of Erdogan, Gulen, resides in exile in PA.

AP says Ankara Police HQ strafed by helicopters.

Think the recent Erdogan attempts to patch a lot of fuss he started in first place( Israel, Egypt etc) and the recent retirement of former PM Ahmet Davutoglu might account for something. I guess Erdogan felt he was already in trouble.

Strange, maybe this is a dog whistle by the Turkish President to his supporters to suggest this is CIA inspired ?

No it is reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fethullah_Gülen who lives in Pennsylvania.

Godspeed to the secular military in putting an end to Erdogan's Islamist nonsense and bringing balance back to Turkey. Hopefully they can then quickly turn the reins back over to a rational civvie government.

Shit....if this coup turns to be more bloody and drawn out than some folks intended....it will make Syria look like a cakewalk. And quite honestly, this event can break Europe's back. That's my biggest fear.

There was no spontaneous rising.

I was never under any impression that the people were opposed to Erdogan. Always saw the Turkish military as the guys who acted in the best interests of Ataturk's concept secular Turkey--no matter what The People may have thought. This seems to be another instance of that.

Sounds like the coup is already starting to falter. Was apparently only a partial element of the military.
