lucklucky Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Coup attempt? http://www.breakingnews.com/topic/turkey/
Marek Tucan Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Reportedly some police - army "clashes" (though remains to be seen how serious). TBH do not believe it will succeed, if they do not have Erdogan by now. He has a large popular support, so with modern mass social media he can do Yeltsin easily.
BansheeOne Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 NATO deploying troops to face off with the Russians, female British prime minister, coup in Turkey - I feel 35 years younger.
Harold Jones Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Don't forget the Ghost Busters premier, next thing you know, MTV is going to start showing music videos.
TonyE Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Reports that the sultan will seek asylum in Germany as his plane cannot land in Istanbul.
FlyingCanOpener Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 The Jannisaries finally had enough of the Sultan's antics?
urbanoid Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 NATO deploying troops to face off with the Russians, female British prime minister, coup in Turkey - I feel 35 years younger. We have a winner here!
urbanoid Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 'There was a rare Pokemon in the presidential palace, that was the only way!'
Arawa Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 (edited) On Al Jazeera just heard Erdogan saying "this country cannot be run from Pennsylvania". An adversary of Erdogan, Gulen, resides in exile in PA. AP says Ankara Police HQ strafed by helicopters. Edited July 15, 2016 by Arawa
lucklucky Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 Think the recent Erdogan attempts to patch a lot of fuss he started in first place( Israel, Egypt etc) and the recent retirement of former PM Ahmet Davutoglu might account for something. I guess Erdogan felt he was already in trouble.
lucklucky Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 (edited) On Al Jazeera just heard Erdogan saying "this country cannot be run from Pennsylvania". Strange, maybe this is a dog whistle by the Turkish President to his supporters to suggest this is CIA inspired ? AP says Ankara Police HQ strafed by helicopters. No it is reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fethullah_Gülen who lives in Pennsylvania. Edited July 15, 2016 by lucklucky

TonyE Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Seems to be heating up, over a dozen policemen killed, one helicopter downed, soldiers shooting civilians in Istanbul etc Civilians storming a tank btw:
BP Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Godspeed to the secular military in putting an end to Erdogan's Islamist nonsense and bringing balance back to Turkey. Hopefully they can then quickly turn the reins back over to a rational civvie government.
lucklucky Posted July 15, 2016 Author Posted July 15, 2016 I am afraid there is big chance of civil war.
swerve Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 (edited) Seems to be heating up, over a dozen policemen killed, one helicopter downed, soldiers shooting civilians in Istanbul etc Civilians storming a tank btw: Looks like an M60T. Ankara? The car number plate visible is from Ankara - 06. Edited July 16, 2016 by swerve
crazyinsane105 Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Shit....if this coup turns to be more bloody and drawn out than some folks intended....it will make Syria look like a cakewalk. And quite honestly, this event can break Europe's back. That's my biggest fear.
Cinaruco Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVDKM2HSUA0 I have to say I admire the Turkish military for this.
Corinthian Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 NATO deploying troops to face off with the Russians, female British prime minister, coup in Turkey - I feel 35 years younger. Ooooooooooooh yeah....
FlyingCanOpener Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 (edited) There was no spontaneous rising. I was never under any impression that the people were opposed to Erdogan. Always saw the Turkish military as the guys who acted in the best interests of Ataturk's concept secular Turkey--no matter what The People may have thought. This seems to be another instance of that. Skywalkre Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Sounds like the coup is already starting to falter. Was apparently only a partial element of the military.
Cinaruco Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Soldiers surrendering and abandoning tanks. Al Jizzera but the photo seems legit: https://twitter.com/AJENews/status/754168699473502208
