Coals to Newcastle mate, put it this way. Gardening is nice quiet recreation, my Mother at 70 odd years old is always out and about in her yard. It's a 'native' garden, bare minimum of grass, mostly native shrubs and bushes with lots of lots of mulch and leaf litter.... think about that for five seconds, keeping in mind the creepies and crawlies Australia is notorious for.

Now I am the last person to suggest Australia is dangerous, but grannies here play FAFO every day without thinking about it twice, and we need a law outlining the personal consequences of risky behavior? yeah - nah :)

His body was found at the scene under a pile of blankets a day later by police, who arrived at the property on an unrelated matter.

"arrived at the property on an unrelated matter"

Something tells me that may not be the first time the police have been there...

I guess it's an example of Australian Pulp Fiction vignette that Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary could work up.

Why?  I've seen similar around my parents house just north of New Braunfels.  What do you think mud daubers stuff in those tubes they make?

The only ones that big that I know of are in South America.  I’m pretty sure that picture exaggerates the size of both predator and prey.

The Huntsman Spider (Sparassidae)

This is arguably one of Australia’s most feared spiders and with good reason too. The fact is, these bad boys can grow up to 15 cm in leg span, and some of them reach a whopping 25 cm!

Despite their size, however, most Huntsman spiders retreat when they come into contact with humans, so bites are very rare.

In fact, the most dangerous thing about these spiders is the road accidents that they cause (due to falling on windshields and flopping down from sun visors.

Before there were drop bears, there were drop spiders.

Seriously this is a bit misleading

Huntsman are big sure, but they're wonderful.

One of my biggest gripes with working from home since COVID is my presence has scared off the Huntsman that I normally have here - at least 1 but 2 at times. This is not to say I'm some sort of arachnophile or spider pervert. Far from it, my eight legged tenants live by strict rules. So long as they stay above shoulder height while I'm around they are fine, otherwise its a quick spray and the vacuum cleaner for them, but I'd far rather live in a house with them than with out.

So why are they wonderful and worth the nightmares? You will not have another pest in the house. Other spiders sneaking about - nope, just that big one in the corner you can see, know about and have probably given a name - mine are called George. Cockroaches? No way, you can hear them slamming the door as they leave when a Huntsman moves in. Mice, mice prefer not to share space, don't know why I don't think there's predation going on, but I've never had a house with huntsman and mice, yet had mice in that same house without the huntsman. Even ants, it has to be a summer dry spell to get the ants up in numbers to satiate the spiders and see them reach the bench tops and sink in search of water.

So yeah that image is frightening - for the f0cking wasp not poor the spider. :)

Sadly, on a serious note;

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Arsonists extensively damaged a Melbourne synagogue on Friday in what Australia’s prime minister condemned as an antisemitic attack on Australian values.

The blaze in the Adass Israel Synagogue is an escalation in targeted attacks in Australia since the war began between Israel and Hamas last year. Cars and buildings have been vandalized and torched around Australia in protests inspired by the war.

It would be more accurate for the AP article to have said "in protests inspired by Israelis defending themselves" but whatever.

Just days after Israel agreed to a hostages-for-terrorists deal and implemented a Gaza ceasefire, a daycare center was set on fire in an antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia.

“The childcare centre set alight in Sydney on Tuesday after being sprayed with anti-Semitic graffiti is the eighth such anti-Semitic attack in the past three months,” Australian public broadcaster ABC reported. “The building is a short distance from the Maroubra Synagogue.” The building was empty at the time of the attack and no injuries were reported.
