CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Batemans Bay is a picturesque coastal town that always leaves the welcome mat out for tourists. But tens of thousands of visitors of another kind have more than outstayed their welcome — large bats.

Residents feel trapped in their guano-coated houses, and those who venture outside soon feel a disgusting "sprinkle of something." Then there's the early-morning screeching, so excruciating that Danielle Smith said it compelled her to go on anti-depressants.

Federal Election 2016: Laurie Oakes ties up bookies with multicoloured offering

by Adrian Beattie - 04/07/16, 10:58 AM

The result of the general election might be stuck in limbo but Nine News political editor Laurie Oakes made sure there were some winners last night; 57 in all, a collective $3000 better off.

The Canberra veteran raised eyebrows during the course of Nine's election coverage because he! kept changing his ties.

It even started to trend on social media.

The political journalist didn't make any reference to his ties until late into the program when he revealed what had been going on.

It had all started when Sportsbet announced it was running a book on what colour tie the political commentator would be wearing during Nine's election program.

"All I can tell you is that I am the punters' friend. Sportsbet ran a book on what colour tie I'd wear tonight and the six choices were gold, red, blue, black, green and any other colour," the politics reporter said.

Sportsbet later issued a statement saying that when the political editor appeared at the start of the program wearing a red tie - which was the $2.00 favourite - the team at Sportsbet were patting themselves on the back thinking they had got it right.

Five tie changes later and they realised they'd been had been out-manouvred by the wily journalist.

"Malcolm Turnbull might not be a winner tonight and Bill Shorten might not be a winner but there

are a lot of winners here and I am very pleased about that," said Mr Oakes.

IIRC there's an MEU there now as well. They had plenty of F/A-18s operating out of the airport/airbase when I was there too.

JARRYD Hayne is coming back to the NRL.

The former NFL running back has signed a shock two-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans.

The Titans’ incredible recruitment coup makes Hayne the biggest star to ever play for the Titans.

The club confirmed the news at a major announcement at the Gold Coast Airport on Wednesday morning.

Hayne will reportedly earn $1.2 million per season with the Titans in the richest deal ever seen in the game.

Given time he would have been a decent NFL player; he just happened to go to a team that was/is quickly becoming a basketcase in the form of San Francisco.

Titans make the Top 8 and win a game in the playoffs?

Related, I'm a YUUUGE NRL fan despite being here in the States. Watch almost every game online (Delayed of course, because I'm not staying up until 4 AM to watch them live) and I plan on taking in an NRL game and State of Origin game when I go down there next summer.

Go see Origin in Brisbane. The Cockroaches have got sick of seeing their team get thumped by the Mighty Maroons every year and have stopped turning up to games in Sydney. The atmosphere will be much better at Suncorp.

If you're after a decent NRL game you could do a lot worse than Cowboys v Broncos.

If there's anything that is "Because Australia", it's State of Origin. A sport that's only popular in 2 states (Mind you, Australia's most-populated provinces) has a 3-match series in the middle of the season to see whose players from those states are better, and it's serious business about which state you support--and you'd better not be a state traitor either. Americans get that goofy and tribal over college football, but at least it's technically amateur. Just interesting, and quite funny to me to watch from a distance.

I've got no true NRL rooting interest apart from not liking Cronulla, Canterbury, and Melbourne, but I had already planned on getting to Suncorp if I had the chance, but I'd like to try to get to one at a suburban Sydney ground just to see what the smaller grounds are like for an NRL match--especially in a place that's always full like when the Tigers play at Leichhardt Oval, even if the Tigers are generally crap ;)

Come up here to Townsville and see the Cowboys. We get decent crowds and there's always a good atmosphere at the ground. Plus we've got the best player in the world.

Queensland is definitely not one of the more populous states in Australia. The state is about the size of Western Europe and there's less than 4 million people here. NSW and Victoria are the two big states population wise. That's all part of the Origin myth too. Originally when the series was played it was done on what state the players were currently playing in. As NSW had all the money and most of the teams, Queensland regularly got thrashed because all their best players went down South for more money. The Aussies love an underdog so Origin has always been a load of rednecks and bogans from Queensland taking on a bunch of stuck up wankers from Sydney. Sadly they've finally banned the biff in Origin games so you don't get any good fights any more but here's some classic moments from Origin history.
