sunday Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 Good. We could discuss the matter a bit more this weekend.
rmgill Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I'm looking at LH418 from Frankfurt, arriving IAD 1555L on the 17th. They run a 474-8 with Premium Economy, a definite plus with my leg length ... [...] Return could be LH417, leaving 1525 on the 27th; all later flights have Premium Economy sold out already, and I'm not good at sleeping on planes. I have now booked these flights to secure convenient and affordable seats, but are holding off on the hotel pending composition and individual interests of the group solidifying. Unfortunately BansheeSeven is out since his boss chose to have his own vacation in the relevant timeframe; waiting for word from another party. I'm updating the running list with likely attendants and what they want to do. Allan (most interested in ACW battlefields, Udvar-Hazy, Washington Navy Yard Museum, not interested in shooting, may rent car) BansheeOne (all activities) CT96 (local, with car, but may only participate on weekend, will definitely attend VMMV, possibly Udvar-Hazy and Manassas, may organize shooting event) Dave (all activities except not interested in shooting) Fritz (limited attendance around weekend, car, most interested in activities outside DC, National Electronics/Cryptology Museums, Capitol Hill/White House Tour) Harold (most interested in ACW battlefields, USS Monitor Center, may organize Capitol Hill/White House tours) Mike Ryan (most interested in ACW battlefields, will organize VMMV tour) Sunday (all activities; may rent car) Possible extra: Pat (VMMV specifically) Pat is out. Pat will be traveling for business. Mike Steele is out. Mike has local conditions preventing..
CT96 Posted June 22, 2016 Posted June 22, 2016 I plan on taking some days off to participate, but I don't think I can take the whole week ;-)
Harold Jones Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I've got a time off request in for the 19th-26th. I'm going to request congress tour for the 23rd (Tuesday) So far I have Me, Banshee, Dave, Sunday, Allen, Ryan, and Fritz as probables for the tour. I'll submit the request tomorrow morning to allow for any additions or subtractions. It will likely be easier to drop people than add them so let me know as soon as you decide one way or another about attending. Tuesday would probably be a good day to plan on seeing the various monuments on the mall as well. Museums will need a separate day or days in the schedule.
Harold Jones Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 (edited) On the scheduling front, I found this tool at www.calendartree.com I created a calendar. If you want to be part of the group calendar pm me your preferred email and I'll send an invite. Don't think you have to actually register anything with them to join a calendar. Also info about visiting the White House https://www.nps.gov/whho/planyourvisit/the-white-house-tour.htm I have no desire to tour it, but if those not of sam want to set something up I'm willing to park myself in a nearby tavern/restaurant and pull baggage guard for the duration. Allan W Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Harold, I think that the White House is probably a no-go. From what I see in the Canadian Embassy site, they are not offering tours to non-US citizens. So unless somebody has some contacts than could arrange something, I think we should cross that off our list.
Harold Jones Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 We can still wander over for those who want to take pics.
Allan W Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 We can still wander over for those who want to take pics. That would work.
sunday Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Flight tickets bought, going to go with the Berlin cell from FRA to IAD. Spending 3 hours at FRA, could be a good chance to try the Business Lounge, with food and drink buffet, ideal to prepare for several hours inside a Dural tube. Even if that tube is a gorgeous 747-8i. Any news of hotel reservations?
BansheeOne Posted July 7, 2016 Author Posted July 7, 2016 I'm probably going to book at the Sheraton this weekend. I think most in the prospective group got an invitation to Harold's CalendarTree for planning, but I'm just going to list the few points entered so far for everybody. Wednesday, 17 August - Berlin Cell and Sunday arriving IAD at 1555 Friday, 19 August - Harold arriving IAD at 0500 Tuesday, 23 August - Tour of US Capitol at 0940 Saturday, 27 August - Berlin Cell and Sunday leaving from IAD at 1525
sunday Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 I booked with a reduced, non-modifiable, non-refundable rate via chat at the SPG webpage. The agent managed to get a discount rate of 25%, applicable to stays of 5 nights or more, using a code. More info about those codes. I tried to replicate that afterwards, but I had no luck. I suggest trying to book, wait for the chat pop-up to pop, then chat with an agent. Having enrolled previously in the Starwood points reward program could help. And one could earn points of that kind using Uber, even.
Fritz Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 So anything happening on the 19th and on the 22nd? I can probably establish a base of operations at my friend's place in Baltimore which is about an hour and a half from VMMV so I'm not in a rush to book anything until I know the plan. Also what about the actual weekend? I assume something like we go to VMMV in the morning, go back in the evening, repeat next day?
CT96 Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 I got the go ahead from security to coordinate a firing range visit for you guys. I need a headcount and interest count. e.g. who wants to do what? Once I get a starting list, I'll start checking with various ranges and see what we can do, when, and for how much.

CT96 Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Most of the ranges around here are indoor short ranges (25yd or so). There are a few that go out to 50 and 100, but they are outdoor - and a bit of a drive (an hour or so from Dulles). They are... less formal than the ones nearby.

BansheeOne Posted July 12, 2016 Author Posted July 12, 2016 I'm typically interested in anything that goes bang. Rifle range would be nice, and if this would require some travel, maybe it could be combined with visiting one of the ACW battlefields - there's bound to be one nearby anywhere in VA, and anybody not interested in shooting could spend more time running around historic sites. But I'm good with short-range handgun stuff too, since I just had the rifle class at last year's I&I but haven't fired a pistol in years. And I've actually never used a shotgun, and would welcome some familarization prior to our annual family gathering in September, which is planned to include clay shooting this time. Going to book the hotel today.

I'm not really interested in the short ranges (have enough of them nearby), I'd rather go to the longer (and less formal is better). Shooting a rifle at 25yds is kind of pointless. Harold Jones Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Not interested in shooting, but I'm sure I can find some way to pass the time.
sunday Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Do not know about the rest, but I promise to do the utmost to avoid doing a Cheney with any other human being.
Allan W Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Just looking at the hotel in Reston. Is anyone booking the club room with the continental breakfast included or are we eating al a cart in the restaurant?
BansheeOne Posted July 13, 2016 Author Posted July 13, 2016 I booked a room with breakfast for $ 159 per night at flexible rate.
Allan W Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 You do know that the continental breakfast is only Monday to Friday..
