President of Azerbaijan: Azerbaijan and Italy to expand cooperation in defence industry

(Azerbaijan and Leonardo signed a MoU for M-346 in 2020, which included industrial cooperation based on their supply to Azerbaijan)

“President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has met with Chief Executive Director of “Leonardo” Alessandro Profumo in Munich.

The head of state pointed out that Italy is Azerbaijan’s closest partner in the European Union. The Azerbaijani leader described the Azerbaijan visits of three Italian ministers in recent months as a real indicator of development of bilateral relations, adding Azerbaijan places a special weight on cooperation with Leonardo, one of the Italy’s leading firms.

The Azerbaijani President underscored the importance of expanding the existing cooperation in the defense industry.

“Leonardo” CEO Alessandro Profumo noted he is ready to make his contribution to Italy-Azerbaijan cooperation based on strategic partnership between the two countries.

Profumo said cooperation with Azerbaijan is already present in a variety of fields, and expressed interest in expanding cooperation in the defense industry even more.”

Azerbaijan MoD statement:

“Operative information has been received regarding the transportation of military equipment, ammunition and personnel from the Republic of Armenia to the territories of Azerbaijan, where the Russian peacekeeping forces are temporarily stationed, using the Khankendi-Khalfali-Turshsu dirt road.

In the morning of March 5, to verify the information received, the Azerbaijan Army Units attempted to stop and inspect the vehicles transporting illegal military supplies.

The opposing side opened fire and there were casualties and injuries from both sides as a result of the firefight.

We recall that the facts of the transportation of weapons, ammunition, other military equipment, including mines, fuel and manpower from Armenia to the Karabakh economic region have been noticed before.

The incident that occurred today demonstrates the importance of establishing a relevant checkpoint by Azerbaijan on the Lachin-Khankendi road.”

Following the incident 2 days ago, units of Azerbaijani army have observed new case of military transport (ammunition, troops, fuel) on the same road, this time accompanied by Russian peacekeepers, a gross violation of the agreements and the mandate of Russian PK contingent.

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence warns action and reiterates call for the establishment of Azerbaijani checkpoints on Lachin corridor.

“During the day on March 7, the movement of military vehicles of the Armenian armed forces and illegal Armenian armed detachments in convoys from the mentioned road was provided under the accomplishment of the Russian peacekeeping forces.

The implementation of military transportation accompanied by the Russian peacekeeping forces, which is a gross violation of the provisions of the Trilateral Statement, is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately.

We reiterate that providing weapons, ammunition, mines, supplies and other military equipment by Armenia to illegal Armenian armed detachments in the Karabakh economic region of Azerbaijan, as well as transporting military personnel to combat positions and their rotating using this method, is a gross violation of Azerbaijan's sovereignty, the provisions of the Trilateral Statement and the continuation of the policy of military aggression against Azerbaijan.

If such actions are not immediately and permanently stopped, the Azerbaijani side will have to take the necessary measures to suppress the actions of Armenia and illegal Armenian military formations in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan.

The events that occurred once again confirm the essential and inevitable need for Azerbaijan to establish a regime of control over the Lachin road.”

Azerbaijan MOD also calls for complete disarming of so-called “NK defence army”, warns that otherwise Azerbaijani army will have to take “decisive measures by using all possibilities” to disarm and neutralize illegal armed formations in Karabakh.

Aliyev:

- During my meeting with Selcuk Bayraktar earlier this month, we agreed on future cooperation, including creating Bayraktar Center in Azerbaijan. Training, maintenance and also production (of UAVs) will be carried out (at Bayraktar Center).

- I hope that Kizilelma will be in the skies of Azerbaijan in near future.
