swerve Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 A spokesman for the GoG said: "The Government of Gibraltar has no constitutional or legal responsibility to house soldiers of the British Army, including those of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment. “The Regiment ‘belongs’ to the UK government – not the Government of Gibraltar. “These soldiers pay taxes to the UK taxman, not to the Government of Gibraltar. Nice
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 (edited) This is the kind of thing you have to expect happen when you have a defence policy decided purely on austerity. And frankly, that is all we are doing right now. We have a British General warning pretty loudly of an emerging threat in Eastern Europe, and all the Chancellor is doing is looking for loose change down the back of the MOD sofa. Potty. Oh, just found another scare story, think it was on the express, that Brussels plans to destroy our NHS if we stay in the EU. Quite why its not done it over the past 40 years is yet to receive an explanation. Edited May 19, 2016 by Stuart Galbraith
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Gibraltar beaches? From what ive seen of them on TV they look about as lovely as a tray of cat litter and about as much room. Tower Bridge Beach looked nicer. That's why the last Neanderthals died - of depression. Neanderthals? You thinking of them there London folk Tomas?

The youngest neanderthal fossils have been found all around the iberian peninsula coast in caves. In the caves of the monkey rock a few have been found, too. iirc

NiceThe purser of Gibraltar has the same austerity rules as the MoD. But giving up the MoD owned housing is so dumb it hurts. Where are the soldiers and their families supposed to live? Well they could pay an allowance so that soldiers can get appropriate flats at local prices. *snicker* Sorry. Cannot keep a straight face. That is never going to happen. Panzermann Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 All tight as a ducks ass.Except when you are a bank failing at your core business of money lending.
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Thats just the problem, they ARE failing at their core business. We have many market towns (most notably Glastonbury) when ALL the traditional high street banks have left because they think loaning money to plebs is too high risk. Far better return to lend money to China or other stable regimes elsewhere I guess.
Chris Werb Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 I think they moved out of Glastonbury because it had become a post apocalyptic new age hell hole populated by cider drinking tramps in leather chaps.
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Nah, im pretty sure thats Gloucestershire. Particularly the Stroud Valley. In actual fact we have been witnessing a similar trend here. ALL our local banks have now gone. If I want to go to a bank, I have to travel 6 miles to see it. Others are far unluckier. Its a trend that continues right across the west country. Presumably anywhere outside a city now I suspect. Ive never been to those bits on the map north of watford gap where it says 'here be dragons' to be sure. Its an odd thing to have a country that effectively run on financial services unable to provide any to the people that want them. But increasingly such appears to be the case.
Panzermann Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Personnel costs money. It is easy as that. The money is much better spent to the share holders. And a bank in a village in the countryside does not really make much money, because those farmers stubbornly do not buy the newest thee whizz financial products. The banking sector becomes more and more a self powered perpetuum mobile. Until the next crash.
swerve Posted May 19, 2016 Posted May 19, 2016 Oh, just found another scare story, think it was on the express, that Brussels plans to destroy our NHS if we stay in the EU. I thought it was the right wing of the Tory party, which is currently campaigning to leave the EU, which plans to destroy the NHS.

I never took him for a Communist.http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/a-a0f2-Staying-in-EU-will-destroy-NHS,-warns-Lord-Owen Yeah, I do think it kind of strange. On the one hand, Brexit means saving the NHS. On the other hand, Brexit means hand the NHS over wholesale to a group of carpet biting maniacs that want to kill it and the BBC. Hmm, tough one that. Kang and Kodos anyone?
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 Re Gibraltar, I heard somewhere that it once was a mountain range that held back the Atlantic. When it finally gave way, it took 100 years or so to fill the Med. I digress. I seem to do that a long now Ive got into my 40s.

The Torygraph wants to destroy the NHS? All the best Andreas No, they just pass on the message from the spin doctors to their readership. And our high street newspapers which should be asking really hard and searching questions about all this nonsense, no longer appear to be doing so. Have not for quite some time actually. Its been uncomfortably clear the unhealthy relationship between broad sheet and tabloid newspapers and our political leaders (of both polarities) since the Leveson inquiry, so this is not quite the stretch it appears. What is perhaps more surprising is that they are channelling the Conseravtive back bench position, ie Brexit, rather than the Governments position, ie stay in. Which tends to supports the thesis that the Conservative party is starting to come apart along tribal lines. Believe it or not, I dont take any joy in that. They have a duty to represent their electorate, not play the 'look how important I am this week' game they played all through John Majors last Government.

Stuart Galbraith Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 We have to destroy the NHS to save it. Nuke it from orbit. Its the only way to be sure. Other similar hysteria has refered to the EU destroying the British Army by making a European Army. Though personally Im all in favour of the Germans paying for a European Army, particularly as our dozy bastards are clearly unwilling to do it for ourselves. How can we complain about an non existent EU plan to destroy the British military, when we have lost something like 25000 personnel since 2010 just because of austerity? The EU at its worst could scarcely do a worse job of defending the country than we are doing ourselves.
Marek Tucan Posted May 20, 2016 Posted May 20, 2016 heh, EU should set the NATO GDP goal (heck, or even 0.5% lower) and watch member states squirm
Panzermann Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 heh, EU should set the NATO GDP goal (heck, or even 0.5% lower) and watch member states squirm Does any NATO member even match this goal? Maybe Poland and the baltics, because of recent events, but all the rest are going cheap. alas, back to brexiting. Brexit is going to make you Brits richer! Says the Torygraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/05/25/brexit-will-make-us-richer-thats-why-leave-could-still-win/ For certain values of "us" I presume.
