Yugoslavia, 1956 org paratrooper company:

Company HQ - 7 men, 3 x SMG (StG-44), 2 x sniper rifle, 2 x carbine (M1)

3 x Paratrooper Platoon, each with:

- Platoon HQ - 5 men, 1 x sniper rifle, 2 x carbine (M1), 2 x SMG (StG-44)

- 3 x SMG* Section - 9 men - 1 x LMG (M53/MG42), 1 x carbine (M1), 7 x SMG* (StG44). Carbine has rifle-grenade attachment, one StG-44 has optics. Energa RGs were issued as squad AT weapon.

- 1 x Fire Support Section - 10 men, 3 x AT weapon (M20 Bazooka), 3 x tripod for MGs.**, 3 x carbine (M1), 7 x SMG (StG-44)

1 x Fire Support Platoon, with:

- Platoon HQ - 4 men - 2 x carbine, 2 x SMG

- 1 x mortar section - 10 men, 3 x 60mm mortar, 6 x carbine (M1), 4 x SMG (StG-44)

- AT section - 9 men, 4 x AT weapon (M20 Bazooka), 9 x SMG (StG-44)

- RCL section - 9 men, 2 x RCL (M20), 4 x carbine (M1), 5 x SMG (StG-44)

*StG-44 was formally designated "Automat, padobranski, 7.9mm M43" or "SMG, paratrooper, 7.9mm M43"

** This is theoretical TOE, real platoon TOE varied depending on a fact if a company was engaged in offensive or defensive operations:

On offensive operations MG teams (gunner and assistant) from SMG squads would separate and form 10-men strong MG section with 3 men from FS section, lead by plt second in command So Plt would be:

Plt HQ - 4 men, 1 x sniper rifle, 2 x carbine, 1 x SMG

3 x SMG Section - 7 men, 6 x SMG (1 with optics), 1 x carbine (with RG attachment)

1 x MG section - 10 men, 3 x MG, 3 x carbine, 7 x SMG

1 x AT section - 7 men, 3 x AT weapon, 7 x SMG

For defensive operations, men with tripods would be added directly to the squads, so org would be:

Plt HQ - 5 men, 1 x sniper rifle, 2 x carbine, 2 x SMG
3 x SMG Section - 10 men, 1 x MG on tripod, 7 x SMG (one with optics), 2 x carbine (one with RG attachment), 1 x pistol
1 x AT section - 7 men, 3 x AT weapon, 7 x SMG

There was a question how much M1 carbines were available, as only about 1000 were delivered from US which would be a bit short for a whole brigade. Sniper rifles were ex-German Kar98k. Optic on StG-44 was ZF-4.

Total weapons - 9 x LMG/tripod MG, 5 x sniper rifle, 9 x AT weapon, 2 x RCL, 3 x 60mm mortar, 112 x SMG (9 with scope), 38 x carbine (9 with RG attachment).

SMG ammo issue is 7 magazines (loaded with 24 rounds each) = 168 rounds + reserve ammo (unknown quantity). M1 carbines had 7 or 9 magazines (15 rounders only) + reserve ammo. Those with RG attachment had 15 rounds of grenade launching blanks in specifically marked magazine. MGs ammo issue was 650 rounds - 150 rounds in three 50 rounds belts in round carry drums and 500 in two 250 rounds ammo cans + reserve ammo spread over squad (usually single 50 rounds belt per soldier).

Belgian Fusilier (infantry) platoon in 1954. Rifle is semi-automatic SAFN 1949. LMG should be FN Mle 1930 (BAR model D).

Platoon HQ:

  • platoon commander (SMG, 5x magazines, flare pistol)
  • platoon 2inC (SMG, 5x magazines)
  • assistent (same as above)
  • 2x runners (one with SMG, other with pistol w/ 26 rounds)

3x Rifle sections (each 9 men):

  • section leader (SMG, 5x magazines)
  • 2x rifleman (rifle, 10 x 5 round stripper clips)
  • 1x rifleman w/scope (same as above)
  • 1x rifleman w/ENERGA (rifle w/launcher, 2x ENERGA)
  • 1x ENERGA rifleman assistant (rifle, 2x ENERGA)*
  • 1x MG Gunner (.30cal MG, 9x 20-round magazines, pistol)
  • 1x MG Assistant (rifle, 50 round bandolier, 8x 20-round mags for MG)
  • 1x MG Corporal (SMG w/5 mag, 3x 20-round mags for MG)

*Additional 2x ENERGA rifle grenade could be carried in vehicle

Weapon section:

  • section leader (SMG, 5x magazines)
  • 1x MG Corporal (SMG, 5x magazines. 4x 20rnd ammo boxes)
  • 1x MG Gunner (MMG with tripod, pistol, 9x 20-round magazines)
  • 4x Ammo Bearers (rifle, 50 round bandolier, 8x 20-round mags for MG)
  • 1x Blindicide Gunner (rocket launcher, 2x HEAT rounds, pistol)
  • 1x Blindicide Assistant (SMG w/5mags, 4x HEAT rounds*)

* additional 3 rounds could be carried in vehicle

That gives 5-men HQ section, 3x 9-men Rifle section and 9-men Weapon section, for a total of 41 men.

Later development seems to have introduced light mortars and additional weapons on platoon level. It is not clear, but HQ and Weapon section seem to be combined in a single section, as Belgian mechanized platoon has 4 vehicles.

Already mentioned Weapons and Tactics: Hastings to Berlin by Jac Weller (1966) gives a total heavy weapons in Belgian infantry company as 3x 60mm Light mortar, 6x MMG, 3x RL-83 Blindicide. On top of that were additional 2x 81mm Mortars and 1x .50 HMG in company headquarters.

Total men per platoon is 44, 3x squads of 11 men plus Platoon HQ section with 11 men as well.

Squad is given as: 1x MMG (in APC, can be dismounted), 2x SAW (FAL-O), 1x scoped FAL, 3x auto FAL, 4 semi-auto only FAL, 1 SMG.

Extrapolating for HQ squad, that would mean 2 men per 60mm mortar, 4x men per MMGs and 2 men for Blindicide. 8 fighting men, plus 1x RTO, platoon commander and driver. They would be issued around 8 LAWs.

The British Army had heavy AT launchers (CG M2 / L14A1) at section level, plus M72 / L1A1 issued as ammunition, but that was considerably later. I'm not sure whether the predecessor M20 RL was issued at section or platoon level - it may have started at platoon with MECAR Energa as the section AT weapon and filtered down to section alongside Energa / No 94
