Sometimes you just luck out. A 39-year-old Bosnian named as Adis A., who has been linked to at least one of the guns found at the Bataclan four years ago, has been arrested in Germany on a Belgian warrant. Police came across him while investigating the case of two other Bosnians, aged 17 and 28, who were initially detained by Federal Police at Dresden Central Station back in February on suspicion of illegal entry into the country. Their car was also searched for drugs; instead, officers found a total of 17 hand grenades in packages of different sizes, suggesting delivery to multiple orders. Sounds like a Balkan gunrunner ring, something long thought to have supplied the weapons to the Paris terrorists (and about any other somewhat ambitious criminal in Europe).

Balkan Gunrunners? Thought the French "terrs" got their product thru Marseilles--it IS famous for being a haunt for smugglers and plentiful AKs for the Narcothugs to get their hands on.

And who do you think supplies Marseilles? :D

Seriously, most illegal military-grade weapons in Europe today originated in the Balkans - I've seen estimates of 3.5 million which entered the black market after the Yugoslavian Wars and other regional events like the 1997 Albanian "lottery rebellion". There are some other sources; ex-Soviet troops who sold them before withdrawing from ex-Warsaw Pact countries, sloppily deactivated and re-activated assault rifles from Slovakia and adjacent places, state/overseas supplies to Cold War terrorists like American and Libyan guns for the PIRA, and of course those stolen from domestic forces. Weapons from the Libyan civil war will probably make their way across the Mediterranean, too.

The guy who shot up the kosher supermarket in Paris in 2015 carried two Czech vz.58 assault rifles made in 1961 and 1964 respectively, converted to fire blanks in 2013/14 and re-converted after sale to a Frenchman by a Slovakian gun shop the latter year. Same for a total of four Tokarev TT 33 pistols made in 1951/52 he had; an old Nagant M1895 revolver was also found at his apartment. An additional TT 33 and 15 vz.58s along with to re-activated Berettas were found at a gunshop near Lille, run by a former Front National security type who embarrassingly turned out to be a police informer since 2013 - he claimed he had bought the guns as part of a Gendarmerie sting operation against gun traffickers (shades of "Fast and Furious").

One of the vz.58s used in the attack also seems to have come via a Belgian gun collector who bought it on site from the Slovakian shop. The same shop was the source for four vz.61 Skorpion SMGs mail-ordered by a German student of mechatronics who seems to have made a business out of re-activating deacts and selling them on for ten times the price. The Skorpion is a bit of a status symbol among European criminals; the four in this case were destined for a British serial burglar who ordered them from jail by cellphone. Another German also ordered three dozen Skorpions for conversion purposes from the Slovakian shop, separately sourcing raw tubes for new barrels from Austria; he already had a prior conviction for supplying the para-military Hoffmann right-wing group with a dozen SMGs and five hand grenades in the late 90s.

The "Charlie Hebdo" attackers had Zastava M70s, as had the terrorists who shot up the Paris restaurants in November 2015. An M70 made for the Yugoslavian territorial defense forces in 1981 was also found at the Bataclan concert hall along with a Chinese Norinco AK thought to have come from Albania, a Bulgarian AK made in 1985, and by one unconfirmed claim an East German MPi-K AK variant; apparently some of the latter were sold to parties in the Yugoslavian Wars after decommissioning, sawn apart and welded back together, and a number have surfaced in Belgium.

Part of the Balkans pipeline was uncovered earlier that year when a Bosnian was found with 13 rifles and ten hand grenades in his car during a routine check by Danish border personnel after disembarking the ferry from Germany. The immediate source was a Bosnian ex-cop who was arrested along with a German accomplice while traveling in Germany with four disassembled M70s, 25 hand grenades and two other "explosive devices" in their car. The same month as the Bataclan attack happened, a Montenegrinian was also stopped on the autobahn with eight AKs in his car. And so on.

This is why the EU imposed really butal deactivation standards recently. In the UK an AK (bizarrely other than an RPK which was considered crew-served) had to be welded up since 1995, but it has gotten to the point where an 1888 commission rifle can't have sear engagement or a functioning magazine now. I don't see many wannabe jihadi's using M1888s anytime soon, even if they were off-ticket in fully operational format (which Kropatscheck, Vetterlis, Gras, Martini-Henries etc. are.)

This looks like a green-on-blue; attacker reportedly a 45-year-old administrative officer employed by Paris police since 2003 who never gave any reasons for concern before.

Date 03.10.2019

Knife attack at Paris police headquarters, 5 dead

A knife attacker has killed at least four police officers and injured at least one other at Paris' police headquarters. The attacker was reportedly a civilian police staffer.

A knife attack at the Paris police headquarters on Thursday left at least four police officers dead and at least one police officer injured, according the police union.

The attacker was shot dead by another officer, according to union boss Loic Travers and police officials.

The attacker was an IT administrative officer at the Directorate of Intelligence of the Prefecture of Police. The union said he had no history of trouble within the force. He killed one woman and three men in the attack, according to the Paris prosecutor.

The incident occured at the Ile de la Cite, the major island in the Seine in central Paris.

Television pictures showed multiple emergency service vehicles at the location near Notre Dame Cathedral. The area was sealed off and the local metro station, Cite, closed.

Police did not immediately confirm details of the incident or the motive of the attacker, however investigators told reporters they are exploring the possibility of a personal conflict.

[...]

The incident happened a day after French police officers went on strike across the country to protest a growing mental health crisis in the force.

There are actually reports that he was a Muslim convert and had recent disagreements about working with females. Which you tend to suspect automatically in this day and age, though people have needed less reason to go on a workplace rampage, and information is still vague.

Paris police HQ killer 'stabbed three colleagues before beating a fourth to death'

The Local

The Paris police HQ attacker stabbed three of his colleagues in their office before beating a fourth to death as he left the building, French investigation sources say.

The investigation is today continuing into the attack at the Préfecture de Police in Paris on Thursday that left four people dead and fifth critically injured before the attacker himself was shot dead.

French police are today questioning the wife and brother of the attacker, an employee of the police department who had worked in IT services for nearly 20 years.

French media are reporting that the 45-year-old man first launched his attack inside the offices, stabbing to death a 50-year-old police major, a 38-year-old administrative assistant and a police officer who was also 38.

As he left the building he attacked a 39-year-old female officer who worked for the Paris community safety team and beat her to death.

An administrator who worked in the human resources department was also seriously injured and she remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The motive of the attack is still unclear, with some saying that the man had a dispute with his bosses. It has also been reported that his wife told investigators that he had been hearing voices and was in a state of distress the previous night.

A police source told The Local that the suspect, who was deaf, converted to Islam in recent months, confirming reports in the French media. However there was nothing to suggest he had become radicalised.

"He was a very quiet person. I used to see him going to the mosque but he practised (his religion) in a normal way," a neighbour, who asked not to be named, told AFP. Local residents said the man had two children aged 9 and 3.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo paid tribute to the victims saying that "Paris weeps" for the victims who, as members of law enforcement, had worked to keep Parisians safe.

Well, there are apparently sufficient grounds for an anti-terror investigation.

Deadly Paris police stabbings investigated as possible terror attack

The Local
5 October 2019
09:04 CEST+02:00
French detectives on Friday referred the investigation into a knife rampage by a staffer at Paris police headquarters that left four colleagues dead to anti-terrorist prosecutors, sources said.

Three police officers and an administrative worker -- three men and a woman -- died in the frenzied 30-minute attack on Thursday at the police headquarters, a stone's throw from the Notre-Dame cathedral in the historic heart of Paris.

The assailant, a 45-year-old computer expert, was eventually shot dead by police. Two other people were injured in the Thursday lunchtime stabbing spree that sent shock waves through an embattled French police force already complaining of low morale.

Sources at the Paris prosecutor's office, which had been handling the inquiry, said on Friday that the case had been passed to the anti-terrorist prosecutor's office (PNAT).

The attacker, named as Mickael Harpon, was born on the French overseas territory of Martinique in the Caribbean. He was partially deaf.

Preliminary enquiries suggest that Harpon, a convert to Islam, could have become radicalised, said sources, who added that he had worked in a section of the police service dedicated to collecting information on jihadist radicalisation.

Le Parisien newspaper are reporting that an examination of the knifeman's mobile phone was one reason investigators believe his deadly violence was motivated by terrorism, rather than a workplace row as first thought.

According to reports Mickael Harpon bought the ceramic knife on the morning of the attack and sent a message to his wife confirming the purchase. She reportedly responded 'Only god will judge you. Allahu Akbar'.

He was also on radar of intelligence services due to posts on social media and reported expressions of support for the terror attack on Charlie Hebdo in 2015.

As yet it is unclear if he was under surveillance at the time of the attack.

He had worked for the police since 2003 without ever arousing suspicion. But his wife, who is being questioned by police, claimed he had behaved in an "unusual and agitated" manner the night before the attack, sources said.

Investigators were examining further text messages between him and his wife, whose detention was extended on Friday.

A 'quiet person'

A search of the couple's house in a low-income Paris suburb near Charles de Gaulle airport yielded no evidence that the man, who became a Muslim about 18 months ago, had been motivated by radical religious ideology, one source added.

Computer equipment seized in the search was still being examined. AFP correspondents saw investigators -- faces concealed by balaclavas -- lead out from the house late Thursday a man and a woman who hid behind hoods.

One motive investigative sources mooted was a personal conflict at work.

"He complained to me that his career had not evolved, due to his handicap," said Abdelaziz, the deputy head of a local Muslim organisation who attended the Gonesse mosque with the attacker.

[...]

'One of us'

Tension has been growing in police ranks, stretched to the limit after months of weekly "yellow vest" anti-government demonstrations and years of high alert following a string of terror attacks in France.

Hundreds of police and headquarters staff observed a minute of silence in the courtyard of the building Friday in memory of their fallen comrades.

"This tragedy is all the more awful as it took place inside the police headquarters and it came from one of us," Paris's top policeman Didier Lallement said.

The killings came a day after thousands of police officers marched in Paris for better working conditions, a rare protest against the backdrop of a spike in police suicides -- 52 so far this year.

The police have also been a recurring target of jihadist groups, such as Islamic State, behind a wave of attacks since 2015 -- from large synchronised assaults to isolated knife and gun attacks.

In June, a parliamentary report on radicalisation within the public services spoke of 30 suspected cases out of the 150,000 police officers and 130,000 gendarmes in France.

Still sounds more like a bad case of schizophrenia to me.

Don't discount the "both" outcome. People who are mentally disturbed often go to various religions, cults, and drugs to deal with the voices.

In fact at this point, investigators are stressing the Islamist angle to the point that the interior minister is under political fire for his initial statements. For starters, the perpetrator apparently didn't convert 18 months, but ten years ago.

Supplementally to the above:

Paris prosecutors: Police attack suspect adhered to 'radical vision of Islam'

The man suspected of a deadly knife attack at the police headquarters in Paris was in contact with conservative Islamic Salafists, the lead prosecutor has said. The suspect had worked for the Paris police since 2003.

A staffer at Paris police headquarters who killed four colleagues in a knife attack on Thursday seemed to have believed in "a radical vision of Islam," anti-terror prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said Saturday.

The assailant, a 45-year-old civilian computer expert who converted to Islam about 10 years ago, was in contact with members of the Salafist Islamist movement, Ricard told reporters.

Police Chief Didier Lallement said on Friday that the attacker, like everyone in the intelligence division, had received a high level of security screening.

He had worked for the Paris police force since 2003 did not have a history of psychiatric problems.

'Extreme violence'

Ricard said the autopsies "attest to a scene of extreme violence" in an attack that lasted seven minutes, adding that the two knives used in the attack had been purchased by the killer.

The man "agreed with certain atrocities committed in the name of [islam]" and defended the Charlie Hebdo attacks in 2015, Ricard said.

The suspect, who was shot dead in a confrontation with police, exchanged 33 text messages with his wife ahead of the attacks, all of which were of a religious character, Ricard said. The suspect's wife is in police custody until Monday.

Officials have not officially said there was a terrorist motive behind the attack, but handing a case to anti-terrorism prosecutors usually indicates a terrorism link is the focus of inquiries.

Ricard said his office had taken over the probe because of signs the crime was premeditated, the attacker's desire to die and the nature of injuries found on at least one of the victims.

Opposition parties call for parliamentary inquiry

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe told weekly newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche he had ordered inspectors to review the procedures in place in the intelligence department of the police headquarters and anti-terror intelligence unit to detect signs of radicalization among civil servants.

Philippe also defended Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, who has come under attack from French opposition parties, including the far-right National Rally and the center-right Les Republicains. They have called for a parliamentary inquiry into the knife attack, alleging that Castaner had withheld information in the case.

Eric Ciotti of Les Republicains wrote on Twitter that the interior minister had withheld information about the possible radicalization of the Paris police employee.

"Why was he still in the police's service, what confidential access did he have? A commission of inquiry must clarify the state of affairs," Ciotti said on Twitter.

"I am confident in Christophe Castaner, who expressed what he knew at the moment when he spoke," Phillipe was quoted as saying on Saturday.

France suffered Islamist terrorist attacks in 2015 and 2016 that killed 237 people.

French police hold five over fatal knife attack at Paris HQ

Issued on:14/10/2019 - 09:43 Modified: 14/10/2019 - 09:52

French police on Monday detained five people linked to a radicalised employee at the Paris police headquarters who killed four colleagues in a knife attack earlier this month, sources said.

Police staged raids at three locations in the northern suburbs of Paris, judicial sources and those close to the investigation said, confirming a report by the broadcaster RTL.

Mickael Harpon, a 45-year-old computer expert, stabbed to death four colleagues at the police headquarters on October 3 before being shot and killed.

It later emerged he had converted to Islam about 10 years ago and had started adopting increasingly radical beliefs.

One of the people detained Monday was an imam who preached at a mosque Harpon attended in Gonesse, who is on France's "Fiche S" list of potential security risks, one source told AFP.

On Friday, the mayor of Gonesse announced that the Muslim association which employed the imam, who followed the hard-line Salafist branch of Islam, had dismissed him.

Investigators have found that Harpon, who had access to classified data within the Paris police's intelligence division, had been in close contact with the imam in the months before his knife rampage.

The killings have raised serious questions about how police failed to notice various signs of Harpon's radicalisation in recent years, despite France being on high alert over a wave of deadly jihadist attacks.

Investigators also found that Harpon had a USB key holding propaganda videos of the Islamic State group as well as details on dozens of officers, raising fears he intended to pass them to other radicalised Islamists.

But although the IS group mentioned the attack in a weekly propaganda statement last week, it has not claimed responsibility for the attack.

Minor event with fairly characteristic psychiatric background, but being investigated as terrorism.

French prosecutors treating deadly stabbing outside Paris as terror attack

Issued on: 04/01/2020 - 21:10Modified: 04/01/2020 - 21:10
Text by: NEWS WIRES

French anti-terrorist investigators said Saturday they have taken over the probe into an attack by a knife-wielding man who killed one person walking with his wife in a park south of Paris before being shot dead by police.

Police said the man, identified as 22-year-old Nathan C., attacked several people around lunchtime Friday in the suburb of Villejuif and they initially treated the incident as a criminal, not terrorist, incident.

But in a statement, the French national anti-terrorist investigation body (PNAT) said that while Nathan C. was known to have had psychiatric problems, worrying evidence had also emerged about his conversion to Islam and radicalisation.

“Investigations over the past few hours have allowed us to establish that he was certainly radicalised (and to show)... organised preparation for his move towards the act,” the statement said.

Additionally, they “showed a murderous path, thought out and chosen, of such a nature as to gravely disturb public order by intimidation or terror,” it said.

Earlier a local magistrate told a press conference that Nathan C. had shouted the Muslim invocation “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) during the attack.

Nathan C. converted to Islam in mid-2017 and is believed to have suffered serious psychiatric problems since he was child, with several spells in hospital. In June stopped treatment he was being given.

Police found literature characterised as Salafist in a bag after the attack, Philippe Bugeaud of the Paris investigative police told the press conference.

There was also a letter “with phrases fairly typical of a Muslim man who self-flagellates and who knows that he may be about to take the plunge,” Bugeaud added.

Nathan C.’s apartment in Paris also bore “every sign that it was going to be no longer lived in,” magistrate Laure Beccuau said.

Nathan C. apparently spared a first person who said he was a Muslim and had recited a prayer in Arabic, she said.

He then attacked the couple, killing the husband and seriously injuring the wife before wounding a woman jogger in the back.

Beccuau said the two women had now left hospital.

France remains on high alert after being hit by a string of attacks by jihadist extremists since 2015, with more than 250 people killed in total.

The rewards of French state to Islamist state continue:

[GellerReport] The 16-year-old French high school student I wrote about a few days ago, has been asked by the police to go into hiding because the authorities are unable to ensure her safety, after she received several death threats for insulting Islam on social media.

The delegate from the French Center for the Muslim Cult Abdallah Zekri even said about the young high school student: “She asked for it, she has to bear the consequences.” No prosecutor will launch an investigation into his incitement to hatred – and we must have confidence in the justice system.

Mila, from Lyon, in eastern France, who claims to be a lesbian, shared a series of short Instagram videos in response to online homophobic and racist abuse from religious Muslims.

The teenager, who regularly posts videos of herself singing on her Instagram profile, told those who were abusing her that she hated all religions, she hated Islam, that there was nothing but hate in the Islamic Koran and that Islam itself was sh*t.

She subsequently received a torrent of abuse, alongside a number of serious death threats, that has led to her requiring police protection.

And now, Mila is no longer able to set foot inside her school, and she fears the incident will put an end to her dreams of a singing career.

“I can no longer set foot in my high school, and I can’t even change my high school because it’s the whole of France that wants me dead,” she told feminist publication Bellica.

I am not racist, not at all. You cannot be racist towards a religion. I said what I thought, you will not make me regret it. There are still people who will get excited, I clearly don’t give a damn, I say what I want, what I think. edit.gif

Romans-sur-Isère: France launches terror probe after knife attack

05 April 2020

French police have launched a terrorism investigation after two people were killed and five wounded in a knife attack in south-east France.

The attacker entered a tobacconist shop in Romans-sur-Isère, near Grenoble, and stabbed the owners and a customer.

He then attacked more people at two other shops before being arrested.

Prosecutors said the suspect was a Sudanese refugee in his 30s who lived in the town. Two other people have also been arrested, police said.

At the time of his arrest on Saturday, the man was "found on his knees on the pavement praying in Arabic", prosecutors said.

David Olivier Reverdy, of the National Police Alliance union, said the man had asked police to kill him.

Counter-terrorism prosecutors said they had launched an investigation into "murder linked to a terrorist enterprise".

The suspect was not previously known to the police or intelligence services, news website France Bleu reported.

[...]

In a statement, the prosecutor's office said initial investigations suggest the attacker had "a determined murderous course aimed at seriously disturbing public order by intimidation or terror".

During a search of the suspect's home, "handwritten documents with religious connotations were found", it said.

Prosecutors said they arrested a second Sudanese man at the suspect's home and on Sunday revealed that a third person - "a young Sudanese man from the same household" - was also in custody.

Two of the wounded are said to be in a critical condition.

Grisly beheading of teacher in terror attack rattles France

By ELAINE GANLEY yesterday

PARIS (AP) — For the second time in three weeks, terror struck France, this time with the gruesome beheading of a history teacher in a street in a Paris suburb. The suspected attacker was shot and killed by police.

French President Emmanuel Macron denounced what he called an “Islamist terrorist attack” and urged the nation to stand united against extremism. The teacher had discussed caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad with his class, authorities said.

The French anti-terrorism prosecutor opened an investigation for murder with a suspected terrorist motive. Four people, one a minor, were detained hours later, the office of anti-terror prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said without elaborating. Police typically fan out to find family and friends of potential suspects in terror cases.

Macron visited the school where the teacher worked in the town of Conflans-Saint-Honorine and met with staff after the slaying. An Associated Press reporter saw three ambulances at the scene, and heavily armed police surrounding the area and police vans lining leafy nearby streets.

“One of our compatriots was murdered today because he taught ... the freedom of expression, the freedom to believe or not believe,” Macron said.

He said the attack shouldn’t divide France because that’s what the extremists want. “We must stand all together as citizens,” he said.

The incident came as Macron’s government works on a bill to address Islamist radicals who authorities claim are creating a parallel society outside the values of the French Republic. France has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe with up to 5 million members, and Islam is the country’s No. 2 religion.

A police official said the suspect, armed with a knife and an airsoft gun — which fires plastic pellets — was shot dead about 600 meters (yards) from where the male teacher was killed after he failed to respond to orders to put down his arms, and acted in a threatening manner.

The teacher had received threats after opening a discussion “for a debate” about the caricatures about 10 days ago, the police official told The Associated Press. The parent of a student had filed a complaint against the teacher, another police official said, adding that the suspected killer did not have a child at the school.

An ID card was found at the scene but police were verifying the identity, the police official said. French media reported that the suspect was an 18-year-old Chechen, born in Moscow. That information could not be immediately confirmed.

[...]

It was the second terrorism-related incident since the opening of an ongoing trial for the January 2015 newsroom massacre at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had published caricatures of the prophet of Islam.

As the trial started, the paper republished caricatures of the prophet to underscore the right of freedom of expression. Quickly, a young man from Pakistan was arrested after stabbing two people with a meat cleaver outside the newspaper’s former offices. They did not suffer threatening injuries. The 18-year-old told police he was upset about the publication of the caricatures.

In a video posted recently on social media, a man describing himself as a father at the school said the teacher who was slain had recently shown an offensive image of a man and told students it was “the prophet of the Muslims.” Before showing the images, the teacher asked Muslim children to leave the room because he planned to show something shocking, the man said.

“What was the message he wanted to send these children? ... Why does a history teacher behave this way in front of 13-year-olds?” the man asked. He called on other angry parents to contact him, and relay the message.

IIRC there were a pictures showing head removed from a body, I did not want to delve deeper to check if it was real or fake.

The killer was 18-year-old Abdulla Anzorov, ethnic Chechen born in Moscow.
His family moved to France in 2008, and in 2011 they obtained refugee status through the courts and have been living there ever since.
Anzorov this year received a residence permit in France for 10 years. He lived most of his short life in France.
He cut off the head of the history teacher with shouts of "Allahu Akbar" and with the same shouts he rushed at the police with a knife. Earlier, the slain teacher received complaints from Muslim parents who were dissatisfied with the teaching methods, which, among other things, were associated with the demonstration of cartoons ridiculing Islam and the naked prophet. Mohammed's. He also received various threats related to his training methods, and some of them were previously dealt with by the police. But as we can see, Anzorov decided to move from threats to action.

P.S. From Rissian liberal media - "9 people were detained, including relatives of the terrorist— parents, brother and grandfather, as well as the parents of some students of the College where the victim taught..." No single word of complain about totalitarian regime going after innocent relatives, as they usually do in their articles when Islamist cells cleaned out in Russia/

France to expel 231 suspected extremists after attack on teacher

By Caroline Pallier

October 19, 2020 — 8.05am

Paris: France is preparing to expel 231 foreigners on a government watch list for suspected extremist religious beliefs, a police union source said, two days after a Russian-born Islamist beheaded a teacher.

France's interior ministry, responsible for expelling foreigners, was not available to confirm the information, which had been initially reported by Europe 1.

France defines extremists as "people who, engaged in a process of radicalisation, are likely to want to go abroad to join terrorist groups or take part in terrorist activities".

President Emmanuel Macron's centrist government has been under pressure from conservative and far-right parties to take a tougher stance on non-nationals deemed to pose a security threat.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin asked local prefects to order the expulsions at a meeting on Sunday afternoon, Paris time, according to the source and Europe 1.

Of the total number of suspects, 180 people are currently in prison and 51 were due to be arrested in the next hours, the police union source said.

Darmanin also asked his ministry's services to examine more closely the requests of people wishing to obtain the status of refugee in France, the source said.

The 18-year-old suspected Islamist who beheaded history teacher Samuel Paty outside his school on Friday was born in Russia of Chechen origin and had refugee status.

Macron held a Defence Council meeting with senior cabinet ministers on Sunday as thousands of people gathered across France to support teachers and defend freedom of expression after the killing of Paty.

From Paris to Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and Lille large crowds gathered quietly, pausing regularly to applaud, hold minutes of silence or sing the national anthem.
