Kadrun Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 I heard from the news that Fins are buying 40 used K9 Thunder. Used? I don't think there is used K9 Thunder available since Korea is still producing hundreds more.
PKman Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 http://www.hankookilbo.com/v/3810a116e91a40deb088a5860e9f9e4f The link says that they're used ones. They might be leftovers from reduced Mech divisions or defense ministry thinks that it may be better to roll out some brand new K-9 PIPs. Just for some 'economic effects,' I guess.Anyway, K-9 seems to be flying off the shelves around the world, from India to Finland.Hope Norwegian and Danish sales goes well. P.s. Link below shows K-9s in India.Interestingly, there is a wheeled model of K-9. http://bemil.chosun.com/nbrd/bbs/view.html?b_bbs_id=10044&num=173083
PKman Posted June 2, 2016 Posted June 2, 2016 Oh, and my source says that K-9 production ends in 2014. It might be wrong since it was written in 2013.
Kadrun Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I wonder if K9 Thunder can become a new standard SPH for western & NATO. Relatively cheap compared to Pzh 2000 even as K9 + K10 set. With current sale effort at 3 Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Finland), and still ongoing production + planned upgrade will give a lot of advantage for logistics.+ 1,700 K9 and its variant will be in service by 2020 all around the world, then PIP kicks in. After that, Korea will be preparing next-gen SPH for upcoming 2030.
Kadrun Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 MoD decided to increase the production of K9 to near 1,200, so production does not end until 2019.Also, it is scheduled to be upgraded after 2020.
Damian Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 I keep my fingers crossed. Kadrun we recently talked with our guys sering on new Krab with K9 chassis, they are delighted!

But a level below standard which is a level of being used by a number of European countries is still something to regard as quite successful.
JasonJ Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 (edited) Footage of new Hyundai wheeled armored vehicle being tested in the video that starts at 0:17. Is said 600 vehicles will start being deployed next year. Other kinds of variants such as anti-air are planned to be developed from it. Edited August 31, 2016 by JasonJ

I don't think there is used K9 Thunder available since Korea is still producing hundreds more.Maybe they want to talk the koreans into selling their slightly used pieces when they start producing the Block 2?
Kadrun Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Used K9 for Finnish was rumor. It seems Fins will get brand new K9, if they decided to purchase. BTW, Korea is testing unmanned K9 fo real. 1st phase: unmanned firing system2nd phase: unmanned driving system wtf?
Panzermann Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I thought the K9 turret is fully automated anyway? Shoukdnt be too hard to go all the way. Well there are working autonomous cars driving around on our streets today. Putting that technology in a SPH shouldn't be too hard, but I doubt a robot brain drives cross country without sinking the vehicle in a mud hole.

WRW Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Was surprised to hear an African country, assuming dirt poor, to want K2s, but they actually have 18,000 per capita PPP. And with a population of just a little more than 2 million, it makes sense that they would want high quality to make up for low numbers.Lived there a while. Lovely place. Very nice people. Lot of diamonds

Kaman make a drone helo that delivered supplies in Afghanistan as well. Soon it'll be "Second Variety" time
GARGEAN Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Kaman make a drone helo that delivered supplies in Afghanistan as well. Soon it'll be "Second Variety" time Well, that's far from really hard task. Only problem is picking up place for landing and landing itself. OTOH, full surface movement...

Damian Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 (edited) @Kadrun, look what our guys are thinking about another potential application of K9 chassis. Edited September 7, 2016 by Damian
TOW-2 Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 I like the rounded surfaces on that turret - looks positively Maschinenkrieger-like!
Kadrun Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 @Damian On the contrast, Korea's latest self-propelled anti-aircraft gun is K30/A1, and it uses extended K200A1 chassis. Putting that Polish system onto K9 SPH? Never thought about that.
Panzermann Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Makes more sense than using the T-72 derived hull to standardize on the K9 hull for all the miscellaneous vehicles. Though, isn't the big radar dish hanging over the rear end when folded down? Looks damage prone to me when driving through the forest.

Right now general commander of the armed forces, general Miroslaw Rozanski is in South Korea.
Hakka Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 I like the rounded surfaces on that turret - looks positively Maschinenkrieger-like!Yes. The whole thing looks really cool overall. Makes me think of Ghost in The Shell, actually.
Tantalwz88 Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 Next year at MSPO 2017 South Korea will have their own national pavilion to showcase their defense products.
