I'm looking to make the fenders on my RC M1 working. Here's a photo of one such fender:

I reckon the rod is a spring. Wot I need is a material that can act like such a spring on a 1/16 scale. Any ideas?

Yes. Fake it. Unles you could get your hands on some superelastic Nitinol, better use a rubber fender.

I used good umbrella wires as semi-decent torsion springs, but I am not sure if scale is right.

I'll check if I got a broken umbrella. Thanks for the idea, bojan!

I just found a thick-ish guitar string. Looks just about right. Currently modifying the fender. Hopefully tomorrow it'll be ready for testing with the guitar string ala fender spring.

If you have any old domestic machinery lying around, you will be amazed what resides in them. Washing machines, old kitchen appliances, video machines etc...even clothes pegs often yield interesting material if you are interested in models or model engineering.
