Markus Becker
The new Covid regulations are out and eventually made me a gun owner. My Walther P22Q “Tweety”. https://postimg.cc/svWpLZ8x Not for shooting holes into things or God forbid people but for pissing of the Do-Gooders and the Government. Second year in a row they have used Covid as the pretext for banning the sale of fireworks. After think of the "poor children in Africa/Pets/Smog/CO2" didn't work understaffed and overworked hospitals did the trick. Never mind they have been for years and actually reduced their capacity during the Pandemic because of Government mismanagement. There will be a universal vax mandate with shots every six months but not now(because for the 2nd time they have not ordered enough vaccine). Maybe in March(when the infections are down anyway). BansheeOne
Those days when you have aircraft coming the wrong way on the autobahn. I think we may have crossed that bridge during the Southwest Germany I&I. Quote Date 04.12.2021 Author Alex Berry Germany: Pilot performs emergency landing on autobahn bridge A truck driver and pilot were left relatively unharmed after a plane made an emergency landing on a highway. Police estimate the cost of the incident will reach tens of thousands of euros. A pilot crashed his light aircraft into a truck on Saturday after being forced to carry out an emergency landing on an autobahn bridge used by cars, local police confirmed in a statement. The 72-year-old had been flying from France to the Netherlands, over the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, when his single-engine began to fail and he had to quickly decide when to bring the aircraft down. He landed on the Schwarzbachtalbrücke — a 100-meter (328 feet) high bridge close to the city of Pirmasens in western Germany, on the border with France. On the bridge, his plane crashed into an oncoming truck. The pilot was left with light injuries while the truck driver came away unscathed, police said. Numerous emergency service personnel were quick to arrive at the scene. The whole road had to be completely closed off while police cleared the fuel and took the plane apart. The lanes had been cleared by evening, local newspaper Die Rheinpfalz reported. Authorities estimated the cost of the incident to amount to around €60,000 ($68,000). https://www.dw.com/en/germany-pilot-performs-emergency-landing-on-autobahn-bridge/a-60022733

DB
Interestingly (to me, at least), "semi-detached" is "duplex" in the US. I thought that referred to a split-level apartment, i.e. one spread over two floors/stories. Always something new.
R011
The first term is actually fairly logical - a double-house half. It is clearer than either "duplex" or "semidetached" The last is just technical. The middle one I assume applies to indoors rather than outdoors, in which case it would be a "gust"? Ssnake
Doppelhaushälfte is "half of a duplex house", which is often sold in Germany for real estate. You have almost your home with almost no neighbors for a bit of reduction in infrastructure cost (or you build almost two houses for the price of a larger one that you can't afford, half of which you then sell off to someone who could almost afford a single home). Stoßlüften is the art of air exchange in a room or building without cooling down the walls. And "nicht vergnügungssteuerpflichtig" it is when something is no fun at all. Just to add amusement to the plexification of English, here in Texas there is a residential building called a quadplex. Typically a two-story, 4 apt residence. Shared parking and yards. I guess quadplex sounds better than apartment. There are tons of them here, which makes me think there is a tax/legal advantage over larger apt buildings. DB
Funnily enough, Ivanhoe, I live in a block of four maisonettes that approximately meets your description. No common spaces - we each have an exterior access "front door", and due to the oddities of ex-council accommodation, we also have our own individual gardens. A maisonette is typically defined as an apartment (aka "flat") that has its own entrance, to the world rather than to a common space like a hallway. For reference, a "cottage" isn't a country residence with a thatched roof, it's a house where the front door opens into a living room, not a hallway. A German regional court on Wednesday sentenced a caregiver to 15 years in prison over the killing of four people in a disabled care home in Potsdam, near Berlin. In April, four acutely disabled residents were found dead in various rooms in the facility with fatal wounds. The 52-year-old nurse was found guilty of four counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The defendant, identified as Ines Andrea R.*, will be barred for life from working in care homes. 'Intense, extreme violence' According to the court, the defendant had first tried to strangle two residents, believing one of them to be dead and giving up on the other because it was too difficult. She then stabbed four other residents to death with an 11-centimeter (4-inch) knife. Ines Andrea R. was also found to have tried to kill a fifth resident, who survived with serious injuries after emergency surgery. Police said the murdered victims, two women and two men aged between 31 and 56, had been subjected to "intense, extreme violence." Wednesday's verdict met the prosecution's demands. Chief prosecutor Maria Stiller had called the killings a "profoundly evil" act. The care home, the Thusnelda-von-Saldern-Haus, has around 65 residents and more than 80 employees. It specializes in helping patients with physical and mental disabilities. Psychiatric care required The court required Ines Andrea R. to remain in a secure psychiatric facility for an unspecified period of time. The nurse was sent to psychiatric care after she was detained immediately following the rampage. At the start of her trial in October, the defendant told the court that she had been a lonely child and had bad relationships. The married mother of two sons expressed her regret after closing arguments at the trial last week. She said she was still in shock about committing the murders. "I'm really sorry," she told the court. [...] https://m.dw.com/en/germany-nurse-jailed-for-15-years-over-care-home-killings/a-60223238
BansheeOne
Quote Date 26.12.2021 Author Timothy Jones Germany: Woman bites woman in fight over dog discipline Two dog owners engaged in a fight which culminated in one woman biting another in east Germany. Meanwhile, their dogs "simply looked on," police said. One dog owner has bitten another in the eastern German state of Thuringia in a fight over the correct way to discipline canines. The quarrel occurred after a 27-year-old woman saw a 51-year-old woman hitting her dog, according to the police. The younger woman allegedly took the older one to task for using such corporal punishment. A quarrel ensued in which the two dog owners ended up hitting one another. In the course of the fight, the older woman reportedly fell and dug her teeth into a calf of the 27-year-old, resulting in an injury. "The dogs only looked on and did not engage in biting" during the fight between the two women, German police said. The women are to appear in court on charges of causing physical injury. https://www.dw.com/en/germany-woman-bites-woman-in-fight-over-dog-discipline/a-60259574

BansheeOne
Quote Date 07.01.2022 Berlin cannibal case: Court sentences man to life for murder A 42-year-old teacher has been found guilty of murdering a man and dismembering his body in September 2020 to fulfill his "cannibalism fantasies," the Berlin court ruled. A court in the German capital on Friday sentenced a teacher to life in prison in a cannibalism-motivated murder case that shocked the nation. The brutal details of the September 2020 killing made headlines in Germany for months. The ruling on Friday makes it nearly impossible for the convicted to be released early from prison. What did the court say? The 42-year-old defendant, identified in line with German privacy laws as Stefan R., was found guilty of murder and also of disturbing the remains of the dead, the Berlin state court said. In their ruling, the judges said Stefan R. committed the murder "in order to fulfill his cannibalism fantasies." "What you have done is inhuman," said presiding Judge Matthias Schertz, adding that the case was "despicable." In Germany, life sentences carry a minimum of 15 years in prison, after which the prisoner can typically apply for parole. But in this case, the state court found that there was a "special gravity of the defendant's guilt." The designation means Stefan R. will not likely be released from prison after 15 years. What happened in the case? Stefan R. was convicted of killing a 43-year-old man in Berlin on September 6, 2020. The two met on a dating website and agreed to meet up for sex at Stefan R.'s apartment. According to prosecutors, the teacher then drugged his victim and sedated him. Stefan R. then slit the man's throat and cut off the man's genitals — with the intention of eating them. Afterward, Stefan R. cut up the body, hiding the parts in various areas in the Berlin neighborhood of Pankow. Weeks after the murder, police uncovered human bones in the district. They later confirmed that they belonged to the missing 43-year-old man. Subsequent investigations eventually led authorities to Stefan R.'s apartment, where they found further human remains, blood and tools that were likely used in the killing. Stefan R. did not speak much during the murder trial, except to deny the murder charges. https://www.dw.com/en/berlin-cannibal-case-court-sentences-man-to-life-for-murder/a-60362225
