BansheeOne
Minor controversy about public broadcaster ARD designating R&B singer Xavier Naidoo as the German candidate in the next Eurovision Song Contest, voters only to decide with which song. Naidoo is of South African (Indian-German father, South African-Irish mother) descent, born in Mannheim - a band he also sings in are the "Söhne (sons of) Mannheims" - and does mostly Christian-themed music. My brother #3 once flew into Mazar-i Sharif with him where he entertained the troops without making any PR fanfare about it. Unfortunately he's also a bit of a kook of the "Germany is still an occupied country run by pedophiles, the constitution is illegal" type found in the Reichsbürger movement, something that became apparent when he showed up at some of the recent pro-Russian "peace" demonstrations frequented by this ilk. He has also been accused of anti-semitism and homophobia over some of his texts. Some of the reactions were quite funny - "Xavier Naidoo will represent the FRG at the ESC - or would that be the German Reich?", "great idea, let's send a stuck-up religious homophobe to the gayest event in Europe!", etc. ARD of course said he's all for diversity and can't be an anti-semite because his father could only immigrate with the help of a Jewish uncle. ETA some explanatory videos. Edited November 19, 2015 by BansheeOne
Panzermann
Considering that Göring's second in command was a jew. And a jewish doctor treated Adolf H. in his childhood... I'd say Nazis are flexible. But why do they discontinue the competition to select a singer of the last few Grand Prix de la Chanson de la Euro vision? I smell record company money. Has to be a division-by-zero error in there somewhere. Makes even less sense than the obverse;

BansheeOne
I can't get past the paradigm of "German R&B singer." Has to be a division-by-zero error in there somewhere. Makes even less sense than the obverse; I was going to admit ignorance on Mr. Lead Belly, but reading the Wiki entry I feel I might have made the connection before that he was used by Stephen King as a template for the black (though female) singer in "Bag of Bones" whose songs got covered by a lot of later Rock legends. On German R&B, well first of all the term seems to be used losely for Hip Hop Pop lately; most local artists indeed have some sort of immigration background, though there are exceptions; I've posted on Peter Fox and Seeed before on this thread. Recently I like "As you Are" by MoTrip, Lebanese-born, feat. Lary, singer-model of British-Jamaican descent. As a bonus, the stripper in the cage is 2010 ESC winner Lena Meyer-Landrut. I puzzle how she ended up there, though not that she doesn't sing - her style is rather different (mostly, singing generic German-accented English-text Pop). BansheeOne
So ARD faltered and withdrew from their ESC contract with Naidoo. Which somebody aptly commented shows a lack of spine in addition to a lack of understanding what kind of controversy this choice would create - it has been suggested that a little controversy was quite calculated in this PR exercise. A field in which the broadcasters' recent greatest achievement was CGIng a pair of unattached legs standing in their late news studio to create some talk before the major decision that - drumroll! - anchors will now sometimes walk out from behind their desk. For context, the charges of homophobia against Nadoo arose over a collaboration with rapper Kool Savas, specifically over the text of "Hidden Track" attacking pedophiles on their 2012 album "Split Personality" (translation mine): I'm gonna cut off your arms and legs nowand then I'm gonna fuck you in the asslike you do it to the little ones.I'm just sad, not angry.Still I would kill you. You're killing children and fetusesand I'm squashing your nuts. You just have no greatnessand no grip on your little dicks. Why're you not loving any snatchbecause after all any human is from one?Where are our helpers, our strong men, where are our leaders, where are they now? Which got the pair reported for incitement of the people and publicly calling for felonies by a couple of leftist and gay-rights groups including the Left Party, charging that they were conflating pedophilia and homosexuality. Naidoo later said that he wanted to make aware of children being killed in "Satanic rites which really happen a lot in Europe". Obviously the charges led nowhere because authorities saw no grounds to even start investigations, but the song is also among those cited by lefty intellectuals as part of a fundamentalist, völkisch theme of a lone messianic fighter standing up to permeating forces of darkness in Naidoo's recent work. Which I'm sure is something radically new in contemporary music. Also he was among signees among an open letter to Angela Merkel demanding gay marriage this May, and has been participating in "Rock against the Right" events against the radical Right. The anti-semitism charges arose over the 2009 song "Get out of the Reichstag", namely this part accusing German politicians of being pawns of a global Jewish conspiracy: Like the boys of the No Heart Bank which are gambling with our dosh. You've been very, very bad and now stand pissed-on in your socks.Baron Totschild is setting the tune, and he's fucking you roosters. The shmuck is a fox, and you're just fools. Which spread in anti-semite networks at the time of the Euro Crisis since it played to the trope of such crises being engineered by a cabal of banksters, often connotated as Jewish and/or American. Naidoo in fact joined in filing charges of high treason by Euro-sceptic right-wing conspiracy-buffs against then-President Horst Köhler for signing the German contribution to the Euro rescue mechanisms into law back then; he later said officers at the police station initially understood "Hochfahrrad" instead of "Hochverrat" and thought that somebody had stolen his high-wheel bicycle, then when they understood, he was asked into a back room and given an alcohol test. As for his general "the FRG is an American puppet regime, we're still an occupied country since the 2+4 Treaty was no peace treaty" convictions, there is little doubt about it as he has repeatedly uttered this on talk shows and such. On Unification Day last year he appeared on a pro-Russian "peace demonstration" together with the Reichsbürger movement espousing such, in addition to 9/11 Truther stuff. Overall he fits quite well into the anti-EU, anti-US, anti-NATO, anti-Islam, "please Putin save Europe from Americans, Muslims and Gender" crowd. But he still makes nice music. Here's a video of that 3 October demonstration; unfortunately I found no English subtitles, but you get a nice view of our office building in the background, to the left of the Reichstag. Brian Kennedy
If any of y'all Germans care, the St Pauli FC brand is popping up everywhere among US hipster circles. I think it's the novelty of getting to wear a T-shirt with German text and a picture of a swastika but no, it's actually rabidly anti-fascist, etc. Their shirt that's got a picture of an angry gorilla with the logo "fight fascism! Eat Nazis!" Is fucking great though
Ssnake
Well, St Pauli as a district of Hamburg at least has a historic tradition of being anti Nazi at times when it was actually costly being so ... so there's at least a somewhat historically legitimized if badly warped claim to the soccer club's image campaign. St Pauli (the club), however, is more about self-marketing than about actual achievement since at least the mid 1980s.

Right now ...which is unusually good by their last three decade track record. In their best days they were an elevator team - too good for 2nd league, never good enough to stay in 1st. There's no accounting for taste. But I think he was refering to Naidoo's "Alle Männer müssen kämpfen". (For some reason in this video it's set to some Whatshisname Khan Bollywood movie(s?).) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDCuhcMklaA But arguably the best bit out of the German R&B/Soul clique is Cassandra Steen, here with Tim Bendzko.
