The UK’s new £50 note celebrates Alan Turing with lots of geeky Easter eggs

Quote

he Bank of England has revealed the design for the UK’s new £50 note featuring computer scientist and codebreaker Alan Turing. Turing was selected to appear on the note in July 2019 in recognition of his groundbreaking work in mathematics and computer science, as well as his role in cracking the Enigma code used by Germany in World War II.

The polymer note will enter circulation from June 23 this year, and incorporates a number of designs linked to Turing’s life and legacy.

Perhaps not, but it's deserved anyway.

No doubt the man made enormous contributions to the war effort and then was royally screwed by his country.  But is he the most deserving person out there to have his face on that bill?  Honest question.

You could ask that about just about any person being placed on a bank note. He's at least as worthy as Jane Austin, JW Turner, or Matthew Boulton.

As you suggest, we ring the changes every so often. It won't be used for all time.

He enabled you to ask that question and get answers from far in time and space but on demand.

Charles Babbage, Ada Lovelace and he was quite a strong and early entry for the UK into the future.

So you reject the theory that Turing was simply given all the answers by Dr. Who traveling back in time?

As for the pantheon of British intellectual giants, there simply aren't enough bills to cover even economists and political philosophers, much less mathematicians, physicists, chemists, etc.

Would he be on that Bill had he been straight?

No he would not. If it had been done 10 or 20 years ago, ok, but the timing now is such that it is just oozing with "Current Year! 🌈".

No, it was deserved, and long after the time when it would have been fitting, when many of the Bletchley Park Staff were still alive. People must stop look at the world through the tinted spectacles of culture war, its getting boring.

I would argue the reason why he was on there is because if you put Fasson and Grazier on there, who surely deserved it even more, people would have asked 'Who?'.

I've never been rich enough to have one. Do we get one free when we buy a Porsche and a bag of cocaine?🤔

Depends on the size of the bag.

GCHQ had a competition based on all the hidden Easter eggs. On the other hand, I've not had the opportunity to spend paper money in months, so I've yet to see one.

Paper money?  What is that? All of ours are plastic.  At least they can make it through a washing machine cycle and still be usable after that.

Yes,at least some of ours is plastic now. I dont know, ive not used any in years.

I only generally use plastic money for church donations and to pay my photographic (that is photographic not pornographic) models.  Which reminds me to look up the history of William of Orange and how those of the Netherlands were glad to see him go and become the king of Britain after he organised the drawing and quartering of his opponents back in the Kingdom of the Netherlands....  yes you can learn a lot from photographic models....(well of this afternoon's).

You back doing photography Doug? Thats good news. Ive a Sony A20 gathering dust in a bag I keep meaning to use. I had a nice thing going photographing steam trains at one point.

I cant comment on King Billy's penchant for drawing and quartering, but you might find the following of interest.

Wasn't that an angry street mob (though probably goaded by Team Onrange fanboys)?

Organised enough to lynch, draw and quarter and to barbecue and eat their livers.  Strange place the Netherlands sometimes.
