https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Jenkins%27_Ear

This war was triggered by Jenkins´ claims of having had his ear cut by the spaniards. As he exhibited his severed ear before British parliament, someone noticed that under Jenkins´long hair, he seemed to have two perfectly good ears...

One of my ancestors was last heard of (by the mother of his child, my next-generation ancestor) marching off with Colonel Winyards Regiment of Marines in 1739, shortly before it sailed to the West Indies - where it fought at Cartagena, suffering heavy losses. He never came back.

I blame Jenkins.
