rmgill Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Dissolved? More like flesh cooked off the bones.
Soren Ras Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Now that's a proper Fed-Ex Darwin Award (when you absolutely, positively have to get dead). Nasty way to go though. One would hope the sensory overload causes a blackout quickly. --Soren
DB Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Dissolved? More like flesh cooked off the bones. Well, the pool is described as being very acidic, so a little from column A and a little from column B.
Ssnake Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 Acid isn't very good at dissolving proteins and fat (bones and teeth, definitely); (hot!) sulphuric acid works exceptionally well, but that's because it's a pretty good oxydizer, and carbon based molecules like to get oxydized. But that pool probably is only sulphorous acid in low concentration. So, "a lot of A" (hot water) with just "a dash of B" (acid).
rmgill Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 He apparently was found floating later in the day. They tried to retrieve the body but were unable to. So his body was left cooking in the pool over night. The next day it was not to be seen. Anyone who's ever boiled a turkey carcass for 8 hours to make stock would know how all this works.

JasonJ Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 (edited) SEOUL – North Korea on Wednesday sentenced an American student, who had admitted to stealing propaganda material, to 15 years hard labor for crimes against the state, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported. The sentence was handed down on Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old student from the University of Virginia, by North Korea’s Supreme Court, Xinhua said in a brief dispatch datelined Pyongyang. There was no immediate confirmation by North Korean state media of the sentence, which appeared to come just hours after veteran U.S. diplomat Bill Richardson reportedly met with two diplomats from North Korea’s U.N. office to press for Warmbier’s release. Warmbier was arrested in early January as he was leaving the country. He later said he had removed a political banner from the staff-only area of the Pyongyang hotel being used by his tour group. His detention came at a sensitive time, as the United States took a leading role in securing the tough sanctions that the U.N. Security Council imposed earlier this month on North Korea over its nuclear test on Jan. 6 and long-range rocket launch a month later. In recent weeks, Pyongyang has maintained a daily barrage of nuclear strike threats against both Seoul and Washington, ostensibly over ongoing, large-scale South Korea-U.S. military drills that the North sees as provocative rehearsals for invasion. Warmbier had entered North Korea as part of a New Year tour organized by China-based Young Pioneer Tours. He was arrested when the group was set to return to Beijing on Jan. 2. The United States has no diplomatic or consular relations with the North, and the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang provides limited consular services to U.S. citizens detained there. Warmbier is one of three North Americans currently detained in North Korea, which recently sentenced a 60-year-old Canadian pastor to life imprisonment with hard labor on sedition charges. In the past, North Korea has used the detention of U.S. citizens to obtain high-profile visits from the likes of former U.S. President Bill Clinton in order to secure their release. According to The New York Times, Tuesday’s meeting between Bill Richardson and the two North Korean diplomats took place at a hotel near the U.N. headquarters in New York. “I urged the humanitarian release of Otto, and they agreed to convey our request,” the former governor of New Mexico told the newspaper. Richardson has traveled to North Korea several times over the years on diplomatic missions that have included securing the release of other arrested Americans. Detained foreigners are often required to make a public, officially scripted acknowledgement of wrongdoing, and Warmbier was paraded in front of reporters and diplomats in Pyongyang last month. Footage of the event showed a sobbing Warmbier pleading to be released and saying he had made “the worst mistake” of his life. According to the North’s state media, Warmbier said he had been tasked with stealing the banner by a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church in Wyoming, Ohio, who wanted it “as a trophy” and offered him a used car worth $10,000 if he succeeded. Political slogans, extolling the achievements of the country and its leaders and encouraging citizens to work harder and demonstrate their loyalty, are all-pervasive in North Korea. They can be seen on the streets and in nearly every public building, as well as every work unit. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2016/03/16/asia-pacific/north-korea-sentences-u-s-university-student-15-years-hard-labor-report/#.VukpjeYXWj9 Otto Warmbier didn't get the 15 years, but was able to return to the US after about 17 months, but was in a coma during the return. His condition was very bad, and had to go to the hospital upon his return, and died in the hospital.South Korea's top diplomat said Tuesday that the US is dealing with the case of an American who passed away after a 17-month-long detention in North Korea as a "humanitarian matter," explaining that Washington hasn't changed its policy towards Pyongyang over the incident. "The US too is dealing with the incident as a humanitarian matter and its my understanding that it isn't a North Korea policy change (by Washington)," Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha told reporters at the National Assembly after paying a visit to Speaker Chung Sye-kyun and top officials of the ruling Democratic Party, People's Party and Bareun Party. Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, was returned home last week after 17 months of detention in the North, but in a coma. He died Monday (US time) due to what his family has called "awful torturous mistreatment" by North Korea. "We fully empathize with the American public sentiment. We are together with the US administration regarding this matter." The minister also demanded that Pyongyang release other foreign national detainees withheld by the regime, saying "it is our hope that the detainee matter no longer becomes an issue." On Monday, Kang took office as the country's first female top diplomat, undertaking a series of daunting diplomatic tasks such as denuclearizing North Korea, strengthening the alliance with the United States and addressing diplomatic tensions with China and Japan. Her comments were made as President Moon Jae-in also deplored North Korea's human rights violations, expressing condolences to the Warmbier family. "President Moon Jae-in expressed regrets after hearing the news of (Otto) Warmbier's death, and the president plans to send his condolences and consolations to his family and relatives," Park Soo-hyun, spokesman for the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae, told a press briefing. A Cheong Wa Dae official later said the president sent a letter of condolence to Warmbier's family. Moon, in a recent interview with a foreign news outlet, said it was "deplorable that North Korea does not respect human rights, which are the universal norms and values of humankind," according to Park. "The president has also raised questions of whether the North had fulfilled its human rights duties, such as notifying Warmbier's family of his condition when it worsened and allowing him to receive the best treatment," the Cheong Wa Dae spokesman said. The presidential office also urged the North to quickly release South Korean and US citizens held there.http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170621000183 Edited June 21, 2017 by JasonJ
Ivanhoe Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/06/29/minnesota-woman-fatally-shoots-boyfriend-youtube-stunt-gone-wrong/438406001/ A Minnesota woman was charged with second-degree manslaughter after she shot and killed her boyfriend during a YouTube prank gone wrong, according to local reports. Monalisa Perez, 19, was charged Wednesday in the shooting death of her boyfriend, Pedro Ruiz III, 22. According to a criminal complaint, Perez said Ruiz wanted to make a prank YouTube video of her shooting at a book he was holding in front of his chest, AP reported. Unfortunately, the prank went very wrong, and the bullet went through the book and into Ruiz's chest, killing him before he could be air-lifted for medical treatment, WDAY-TV reported. According to the station, Perez fired from about a foot away. Perez told authorities that Ruiz thought the prank would work because he'd shot a different book and the bullet did not go all the way through. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/29/us/fatal-youtube-stunt/index.html Perez, who is seven months pregnant, called 911 on Monday evening, saying she had accidentally shot her boyfriend in the chest while they were making a video, according to the arrest report. I guess this is a runner-up Darwin Award. He won't be making any more kids, but he made one, so his genes haven't been removed from the pool. She fired from about a foot away with a .50-caliber Desert Eagle handgun while he held the book to his chest. It did not stop the bullet, and paramedics on the scene said Ruiz died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Daan Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 You might think they would tested their hypothesis prior to the stunt by firing at a sturdy book without someone behind it.
Panzermann Posted June 29, 2017 Posted June 29, 2017 You might think they would tested their hypothesis prior to the stunt by firing at a sturdy book without someone behind it. "Perez told authorities that Ruiz thought the prank would work because he'd shot a different book and the bullet did not go all the way through." So they did test it. Still a dumb idea. Sadly not a Darwin award, because both have already procreated.

toysoldier Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 the poor saps probably used FMJ. you are the knowledgeable folks, but maybe a hollow point would have made the stunt without killing the guy?
