Stuart Galbraith Posted February 10 Posted February 10 No need. Ill just sit back and watch Rome burn, you hardly need my assistance for that.
R011 Posted February 10 Posted February 10 If there's one thing that unites Canadians of all political stripes is that we're not Americans. There is no prospect that Canada will become part of the United States.

There is no prospect that Canada will become part of the United States. I think the calculation is that tariffs will hurt us deeply enough that the US will be able to dictate terms afterwards. I've heard plenty of talk about fluff - interprovincial trade barriers and building pipelines, but no actual indication that anything serious is contemplated, like rolling back Indigenous rights to veto infastructure projects, cutting government spending, or having the government workforce take a haircut.

Stuart Galbraith Posted February 11 Posted February 11 On the negative side you get mass shootings, Mexican immigrants abd unafforable healthcare. On the positive side, you get plastic straws back. Yay!

Sinistar Posted February 13 Posted February 13 well needless to say i am sinistar but it is worth mentioning the way this all works trump's style is overt and of course he promised to shake things up as opposed to the covert way of previous administrations operating or the use and abuse of the government which was often viewed as legitimate or necessary including the gaslighting about what they were doing while doing it you might fault trump for his actions but you saw virtually no pushback against biden- as in literally the united states assisting trudeau in breaking a trucker strike in canada- or maybe it was the other way around the europeans are on cloud nine if policy wonks in washington d.c. might put them on a path to damage their economies they have shown their tendency to obey as long as it was not trump doing it and even now with all the information coming out over the last several years you see the way the operation works and concepts of sovereignty or classical western ideals of freedom threatened once it conflicts with messages from our respective governments how solid is the whole thing really
rmgill Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Stuart, you’ve lauded and accepted 5eyes spying upon peer nation citizens.

Why are you still trying to reason with a poster whose sole apparent agenda is to prevent the United States from acting in the interests of the United States?
Angrybk Posted February 14 Posted February 14 (For the record, am married to a Canadian, I go to the Laurentians for a month every year and Canada is my second-favorite country after the US). Went down a wiki hole about Starlight Tours after one of those "b-but Canadians are magical elves who can never do wrong") USAian arguments. That shit is absolutely horrifying, like I'm amazed they haven't made a horror movie out of it. And much more evidence than the Orphanage Mass Grave stuff. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskatoon_freezing_deaths
Sinistar Posted February 14 Posted February 14 a very slick tourism ad from the 1980s tourism ads of these kind do not do much to inform travelers what they would actually experience since the ads they are borderline fantasy from one of the comments in the channel: Quote By FAR the best Canada ad and one of the most inviting international - OR domestic - tourism ads EVER. Makes you wanna go right now, right? Having been there, though, I can say I didn't experience anything like what you see here. I did make memories, though.
Sinistar Posted February 14 Posted February 14 it occurred to sinistar the show is more interesting without the stupid half time or in between performances of rapping and dancing and twerking performers when the audience is more involved and is also the show

Most major police services in recent years have tried to do better. And we have our share of criminals of all kinds including some really nasty ones like everyone else.
Sinistar Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) i certainly hope men pay attention to a lot of the messages in the below clip ignore the thumbnail clickbait imagery let the video rather speak for itself it is not not per se a dig at canada since that is the message in the united states and the english speaking world which is to say the united kingdom and ireland, canada and australia notice how many times it mentioned over and over this is about women versus men and the men are just really rather passive and accept this role as a dog that women kick around if you watch nothing else skip to 25:15 where the female is explaining that women need a permission structure to go against their husbands this is how a lot of modern view themselves and you you men are the enemy this message is beating men down into a pulp and so it is in fact as they say it is because a lot of young men in the united states seeing all of this like never before because of the internet and male spaces like this one hear at tanknet saying what you typically cannot say openly which is why male spaces are usually maligned as where men get together to cause trouble and need to be policed Edited February 16 by Sinistar
Ivanhoe Posted February 16 Posted February 16 https://nypost.com/2025/02/16/sports/canada-hockey-fans-boo-us-national-anthem-with-trudeau-in-crowd-before-americans-win-brawl-filled-showdown/ Quote Canadian hockey fans booed “The Star-Spangled Banner” — setting off a brawl-filled game that ended with a US win Saturday night. The game of the NHL-run 4 Nations Face-Off tournament could have been mistaken for a boxing event — with three fist fights breaking out between American and Canadian players following the widespread booing of the US national anthem by over 20,000 angry fans. Quote Gloves were torn off and fisticuffs flew between US star Matthew Tkachuk and Team Canada’s Brandon Hagel as soon as the first puck dropped — with two other fights breaking out in the seconds following the first bout. Quote A total of three fights took place in the first nine seconds of the game. The NHL is so international these days. Seems to me the tourney should include Russia and the Czech Republic as well.
Ivanhoe Posted February 17 Posted February 17 So it turns out there was a border scuffle up north, back in 1859, known as the Pig War; https://web.archive.org/web/19980214012500/http://www.outwestnewspaper.com/pigwars.html Looking at Google Maps of the region, the cartographers at the time did a good job dividing those islands. However, TIL there is a little 1.5x2 mile chunk of metro Van which is US territory. If you have OCD, do not look up Point Roberts in Google Maps.
Ivanhoe Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Very small numbers to be sure, but kinda interesting; https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/theres-been-mysterious-surge-romanian-illegal-immigrants-crossing-canada-maine Quote Attention is turning to "a recent mystery along the Maine section of the Canadian border". In fact, in recent years, many of those caught illegally crossing into the state by Houlton Sector agents have been from Romania, according to Maine Public and Bangor Daily News. Although Romanians accounted for less than 1% of nationwide border encounters last year, they make up a growing share in Maine’s Houlton Sector. According to CBP data, Romanian encounters in the sector rose from 4% (13 of 303) in the 2023 fiscal year to 12% (40 of 344) last year and now stand at 13% (9 of 70) this fiscal year. While agents have encountered individuals from over a dozen countries, only Mexicans had a slightly higher share.

It was Sir James Douglas saying "we will not go to war over a pig" Pt Roberts is mostly Canadians taking advantage of lower taxes. The stupid thing is that if we were absorbed, it would be 65 States and the GOP would only gain one of those new States, the Democrats would rule indefinitely. The other stupid thing is Trump is actually saving the Liberals from their own stupidity and might actually help keep them in power, which would go against his long term aims.
