Canada is vastly outnumbered by their Southern neighbor, spanked our attempts at invasions twice (ok they were technically British back then but whatever), has to deal with some giant douchebag wanna-be French province (although Montreal is incredible, go visit!), did their duty for the UK in two World Wars and has a fully functional polity that's able to absorb the impact of douchebags like Rob Ford and Trudeau.

I'm married to a Canadian and I get really sick of the Heritage Moments inferiority complex stuff "uh, sorry, but Spiderman is Canadian? Basketball is Canadian? Brunch is Canadian?" But it's definitely the country after the US that I'd take a bullet for in case of an alien invasion. Love that place.

In NATO, you need someone who is a subtle politician - again with experience working in a vigorous multi-party coalition with highly different views, priorities, and goals. That is why Europeans make such good Secretary Generals. While Canada also has a parliamentary system, it and its parties are VERY different than the European model. Freeland only gets partial credit here.

There is also the issue of temperament. Read the links above. Freeland likes to pick fights, often in public. Worse, she seems to enjoy - again as most standard-issue Canadian leftists do - in making snide comments about the government and people of the alliance's largest monetary and troop contributing nation - the United States of America.

The Secretary General of NATO has to be someone by temperament and habit seen as a non-partisan person toward the USA so that they can work with American administrations from all political parties. Freeland has significant issues with the American Republican Party in general and American conservatives in particular. That alone should be enough for serious alliance nations from Poland to Great Britain to be against her as a possible candidate. In summary; Freeland does not possess the skills or temperament for the position.

Not good, not good at all. Could she be defined as a Leftist Queen Bee with a mean streak?

Pretty sure Pelosi was there before. Not that that is a boon for either nation.   Its a degenerate show.

I am not sure why you seem to be bragging about Trudeau on Drag Race. Now is he going to play dress up while there?

This is important stuff I am sure.

Only thing that pisses me off about Canada is obsession with the US, which results in a weird superiority slash inferiority complex.

All the top folks I know who hail from Canada do it the proper way. Whether they're active or retired 'Canned' forces who were quietly competent and the current Canadian government doesn't deserve their skills or sacrifices.

One friend was a peace keeper in the 80s who had to run messages across the Israel, Lebanon, Syrian, Jordanian border with nothing but a BHP and his jeep. Big brass ones. Great fucking guy. He's a hobby farmer/IT dude in NoVa now with a wife who used to do the intel packages for one of the SEAL teams and worked for an under secretary of defense.  Immensely interesting people to talk to.

Wait till the price of food and the price of oil and gas go through the roof.  Remember 1973? Most Americans were not worried about the Middle East, till they ran headfirst into it. Twice.

Instead, most of you here are seriously worried about a Fascist Canadian Prime Minister. Ok then, not much I can say about that.

On Thursday, the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan (OTPP) released a statement saying that in October 2021 it invested $75 million in both FTX International and its U.S. entity FTX.US. Additionally, it said, it made a follow-on investment of $20 million in FTX.US in January this year. The potential losses it could face are still unknown.

One of the more insightful comments on cryptocurrency that I've read so far, is that Bitcoin should be renamed to Dunning-Krugerrands.

Non doubt about the push back being needed. How firm can JT be though? He seems awfully mushy when it comes to major world powers internationally.

Well, look at that truckers march...

Of course, it is not the same to send the RCMP to ride over little old ladies than confront Communist China.

Yeah. The dude is good at beating up the resource equivalent of a bunch of kids on the playground, but what's he REALLY going to do about China? Is he going to freeze Chinese corporate/government assets in Canada?

It's all over our news.  Xi is whining, but the fact is, China is pushing too far into Canadian domestic politics and the economy and some push back is required.

China has been playing hardball with us for years, now that there is more information about the close ties with the CCP and the high ranking Liberals and their backers. He needed something to counter that. But his ham handed way of doing that makes him look weak and destroys any chance of effectively countering them.

The OTPP has net assets of 242.5 billion (yes, billion with a B )and made 5.5 billion in the first half of 2022.  95 million is really nothing more than a rounding error.

Was talking to some finance types about the OTPP a week ago. Nobody knows how it got so big and it’s a cause of much head-scratching, they think there must have been some total geniuses working for it at some point but how would the OTPP attract geniuses?
