No, they weren't.

It depends.  There have been other unmarked mass graves found in BC.  The couple I'm familiar with are TB outbreaks.  They were village outbreaks rather than a school, so a wider cross section of ages.

Without the church releasing their records combined with exhuming the bodies, it's pretty much impossible to know what happened.  Right now all we have are radar images.

While this could also be referenced to "Because the Catholic Church", seems to me our boy Justin is trying to offload the effects of historical Canadian assimilation policy on the former.

Mainly as his father was neck deep in it and he knows that if he says to much, he is going to end up apoligizing for his father and damaging "The Brand"

The Canadian government has already made its official apology and Justin has apologized himself for just about everything a woke person can think of.  He and his government are virtue signalling as hard as they can in part to deflect questions about why so many reserves still make Compton look like Beverly Hills.

As for the Catholic Church, the local Church who were the people running the schools have made the appropriate obeisance.  Both Benedict and Francis have expressed their sorrow at what the Church did.  I'm not sure why they haven't made an "official apology".  I don't think it would make a difference myself, but on the face of it, it doesn't seem to be a hill to die on.

One correction on RO11's post.  Justin has apologized for everything, except when he grabs some tart's ass at a concert.  Then, you'll see no apology, it's different people experience things differently.  The man, our PM, is a truly legendary twat.

In terms of the Catholic church I would expect them to cooperate not at all with demands for documents and information.

I'm not sure that it's relevant whether the death rate of these children was better or worse than elsewhere - it's the apparently casual and careless way they were treated throughout their lives and even in death. Were children who lived with their parents buried in mass unmarked graves, unrecorded and apparently irrelevant?

Depends on if they had money to pay for graves or not. Pauper and/or potter's fields tend to be largely unmarked and untended and unremarkable. During a pandemic, a whole home of poor could be buried with no record of what/who they were and why. Other than by time of the local burial. That's one of the things with folks on the left side of the income distribution curve.

Yes.  Much worse than home.  Malnutrition, overcrowding, bad sanitation, and shocking levels of abuse.  The deaths seem rarely to have been deliberate, but many more than would be normal in non-native or native communities due to the conditions above.

At a time when the death rate per hundred thousand for kids 5 to 15 was about fifty, the death rate for these kids was somewhere between two to four thousand.

We've had numerous incidents in Western History were larger than usual death rates due to specific diseases manifested and it was a crap-show for everyone.  Ostensibly, one could see where well intentioned folks would separate kids from parents and where outcomes for everyone due to a pandemic could be a wash, but otherwise under normal conditions they'd be better. But for it to not be due to anything by malfeasance and incompetence with a dash of intent...

Based on what R011 states here it looks like something that should be cross checked. But at this point, none of the folks responsible are going to even be alive, so closure is hard.

Sure looks like a poster child case of why you don't give government carte blanche to do things for your own good.

The answer to all three of these questions is unknown.  We don't know how bad conditions got, we don't know whether there were deliberate killings, we don't know what the specific rate of mortality was.

Conditions were bad enough for 25% average death rate with one school reaching 69% of students dead.

😶

69% mortality rate of students sounds well into criminal.

With that sort of action, how can anyone in Canada argue with a straight face that government will help?

Four Muslim family members in Canada killed in ‘targeted’ attack, police say.

Quote

TORONTO — A man accused of mowing down five members of the same family with a black pickup truck in an Ontario city on Sunday, killing four and seriously injuring a 9-year-old boy, targeted them because they were Muslim, police said Monday, in what the city’s mayor branded an act of “mass murder.”

Police said the victims, who were struck while waiting to cross an intersection on a warm and clear Sunday evening in London, Ontario, included a 74-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl. The 9-year-old boy is in the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police said family members had requested that their names not be released.

“Based on information collected during the course of the investigation, we believe that this was an intentional act and that the victims of this horrific incident were targeted,” London Police Chief Steve Williams told reporters on Monday. “We believe the victims were targeted because of their Islamic faith.” Detective Superintendent Paul Waight said police on Sunday arrested the suspect, Nathaniel Veltman, in a mall parking lot four miles from where the attack occurred “wearing a vest that appeared to be like body armor.” The 20-year-old was charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

If convicted of first degree murder, the killer can expect life with parole eligibility after twenty-five to one hundred years as parole is now calculated consecutively for multiple murder rather than concurrently as before.  It might get pled down to second degree, depending on what the investigation can prove, but that still puts him away for a very long time.

Trudeau is blaming "hate" for this crime not very subtly implying internet and other hate speech.  I wouldn't be surprised to see knee-jerk legislation following.

What will they do? Ban pickups?

More gun control.  Wider definition and more restrictions on "hate speech".  Apologies for White Privilege.  Demonization of Conservatives.

Beware do-gooders.

While the Wikipedia page does not use the word "progressive" anywhere, he sounds a lot like American progressives in the 1900-1930 timeframe. I'm righteous, therefore my methods are righteous, so if the data are not good, the data are wrong.

Canada: 751 unmarked graves found at residential school

Quote

An indigenous nation in Canada says it has found 751 unmarked graves at the site of a former residential school in Saskatchewan.

The Cowessess First Nation said the discovery was "the most significantly substantial to date in Canada".

It comes weeks after the remains of 215 children were found at a similar residential school in British Columbia.

"This is not a mass grave site. These are unmarked graves," said Cowessess Chief Cadmus Delorme.

Canada: Fire destroys two churches in Indigenous reserves

By Farah Bahgat | 2h ago

The buildings burned to the ground days after the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves at former Indigenous residential schools run by the Catholic Church.

Two Catholic churches in Indigenous communities in western Canada have gone up in flames overnight, local media reported Saturday.

Two similar fires in British Columbia were reported less than a week ago, following the grim discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves at former Catholic-run Indigenous residential schools.

What we know about the fires

Responders reported that the St. Ann's Catholic Church on the Upper Similkameen Indian Band was set on fire.

Shortly after, the Chopaka Catholic Church on the Lower Similkameen Indian Band was also set ablaze, broadcaster CTV reported, citing federal police.

The two churches were burned to the ground, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canada's national police force.

Authorities consider the two fires "suspicious, and are looking to determine any possible connection to the church fires in both Penticton and Oliver on June 21, 2021," RCMP Sergeant Jason Bayda said in a statement.

The Penticton and Oliver fires — about 50 kilometers (30 miles) away — are still under investigation, according to the AFP news agency.

RCMP had issued a statement after last week's fire, stressing that investigators "won't speculate on a motive" despite the sensitivity to recent events.

Apropos of fires. Climate change or not, going on 50 centigrades in British Columbia does sound like one of those cheap "a meteor strike caused Earth to stop turning, topple over and head for the sun" disaster movies starring Casper van Dien.

Canada: Wildfire consumes town of Lytton amid heat wave

3h ago

Over 90% of the small town town in British Columbia was destroyed, prompting the evacuation of over 1,000 people. Prior to the fire, Lytton had seen three consecutive days of record high temperatures.

The small town of Lytton in Canada's British Columbia was destroyed Thursday in a wildfire, as much of the region is in the grips of an extreme heat wave.

The town suffered 62 new fires within 24 hours. Authorities said 90% of Lytton had burned down, including the town center, and more than 1,000 people had been evacuated.

The town lies 260 kilometers (161 miles) northeast of the city of Vancouver.

[...]

The fire broke out on Wednesday evening. Mayor Jan Polderman told local media that he saw white smoke on the southern edge of the town and within 15 to 20 minutes, flames had taken over the whole town.

Lytton had recorded three consecutive days of record heat prior to the fire.

On Tuesday, temperatures crossed 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit).

Heat wave warnings have been issued for the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and parts of the Northwest Territories, and now northern Ontario.

Meanwhile in Canuckistan, statues of Queen Elisabeth II and Queen Victoria are torned down by the neo-iconoclastic crowd:

The amount of whataboutism in this thread calls for some refocusing.

This document contains the figures of babies currently being legally killed in the wombs of their mothers in Canada as of now? And not because of illness or lack of funds to establish orphanages.

Are the kids being actually killed now less important than the ones that died of mostly unknown causes during the last few hundred years?

Looks like Trudeau had the gall of demanding an apology from the RCC, also.

Perhaps in the fevered minds of some statuephobes, Lizzy is a closet Papist.
