rmgill
because they cheaped out on containment buildingsNah, that is an American thing, see Mark I. You mean the one where the control rod speared a man to the roof of the SL-1 building that was substantial enough to act like a containment building? Or the Soviet one where the whole roof of the covering building blew-off and showered the immediate area with carbon and spewed radioactive combustion byproducts as far away as western Europe? No, I was thinking the original, unaltered design now still leaking into the ocean.
rmgill
Nothing wrong with the reactor design itself, generally, for an early generation unit. It's the location that was at issue. So, not putting a reactor on the coast where the cooling system pumps can be fucked by tidal waves is probably smart. It's not like Japan has had any previous experience with the issue. But the 40 meter high wave was a 'bit' out of the norm. But the 18,000 people killed by the tidal wave is notable in the scope of damage. Mind you, leaking into the sea is far more nominal than into the air. For one, the radiation stopping ability of water is FAR better than air. (You're more likely to die from Lead Poisoning than radiation in a fuel cooling pond 1) Also, the water already has isotopes in it. Uranium and some fission byproducts are naturally occurring.1. https://what-if.xkcd.com/29/ Edited March 30, 2020 by rmgill

Murph
Well looks like a corrupt Senator is being investigated by the utterly corrupt FBI. Normally there would be a cover up but since Burr is a Republican there will be a conviction. Feinstein on the other hand will skate with no charges. https://nypost.com/2020/03/30/doj-probes-sen-burrs-stock-trades-ahead-of-coronavirus-market-crash-report/

Murph
A story of true love: https://www.statesmanjournal.com/in-depth/news/2020/09/10/oregon-wildfires-santiam-fire-evacuations-leave-family-members-dead/5759101002/ Quote s the fires burned out and a moonscape was left behind, searchers went back to where the Tofte and Mosso house once stood. It seems 13-year-old Wyatt simply couldn’t leave Grandma behind. Instead of running to safety with Duke, he returned to the disabled car to get her. Their bodies were found in the scorched remains of the family car. Searchers found Grandma Peggy’s remains in the back seat. And Wyatt’s were in the driver’s seat. Duke’s were there too. He was draped protectively over Wyatt’s body, according to a friend of who found them. According to family members, Wyatt’s dog Duke was in his lap — a fact that has brought some small amount of comfort to those who loved him. That's why swimming vs amphibious are important factors. I have to give him props on bucking the system.
