Notice crew in hull visible on these photos, so turret is unmanned.

I thought Koalition-SV was the name of that over-under twin barrel monstrosity mounted on a 2S19 chassis?

It was just technology demonstrator of one of concepts for new SPH... it was abandoned in favor of more conventional design.

That's a shame, a twin-gunned SPH would have been qute a sight!

I wonder if that tarp covering the vehicle will be removed for the parade itself or if we have that same coverage of the Armata when it makes its debut? How long was it before we actually got to see the Black Eagle MBT/tech demonstrator in all its glory? Externally at least...

That would make for an absolutely shitty parade. Might as well just cover them with parade floats at that point.

Now those godless commie bastard hordes are now godless commie semi-robotic bastard hordes....

Why is the muzzle brake covered? How much info can one glean from the design of a muzzle brake?

What, parade with tarp covered? Did it happened before?

If you don't want to show it, then don't show it at all. What is a purpose of a tarp covered parade? And I guess there is nothing that is too valuable to be covered by tarp. Gun caliber could be guessed on the very first appearance. Optics arrangement? Radar? ERA? I don't think there is anything that can be a surprise without a tarp.

A 200lbs bomb will, in theory, solve any surprise in tank development from any country. Or maybe the turret is just a mock up, that is the best reason it needs a tarp

Guessing game for everyone's entertainment! :D

Sorta reminds me of that flight of Soviet bombers which the West over-estimated the numbers but apparently it was the same flight flying over and over Moscow to give the impression of many bombers.

For entertainment, they should put the tarp all over the vehicle, i.e the driver periscope, that will be very interesting.

The first time that trick was used was when a pharoh whose name I can't remember now spent 20 years building a pyramid using the same stone all over and over again.

I'm sure the bloody tarps will be taken down for the parde proper. Logical, no?

So, whats the idea with this Armata SPG? To replace Msta-S? And if so, why? The Msta-S system it self can't be terribly obsolete by current standards IIUC. And the Ru Army must have about 1000 and 1 other hardware (and non hardware) issues which are way more urgent to resolve (an allocate funds to) than buying a new SPG?
Or is it Msta-S T-80:based hull that makes in necessary to swich production to a brand new vehicle for logistical/technical reasons?

2S35 Koalistya-SV first and foremost will be safer for crew, simply because crew sits in hull armored capsule and is isolated from the turret where ammunition is stored. Secondly logistics and manufacturing should be simpler and maybe even cheaper, because 2S35 hull will be made by UVZ where "Armata" heavy tracked platform and all vehicles based on that platform will be builded.

On the other hand 2S19 Msta-S indeed can have some problems because it is unified both with T-80 tank when it comes to suspension, road wheels, sprockets etc. that are no longer manufactured and spare parts at some point will deplete, tough contrary to previous informations, T-80 tanks are not withdrawn from service, tough definately there is less and less o them.

And turret details, very similiar to that plastic model.

Have any figures been released on just how many of these 2S35 vehicles have been built?

Its an interesting point made regarding the 2S19 "Msta-S". Is the 2S19 to be totally replaced by this new system or is it a case of the 2S35 will be put into certain units whilst the 2S19 will be used for training and those units which operate older equipment?

Damian, have you read anything official about changes T-80 retirement? They are supposed to go this year, but there was talk about keeping them longer, and even equipping an Artic Brigade with them. I still think T-80B/U with upgrade are perfectly capable. Omsk should be able to carry out overhauls, and spares should be available. Only a proportion of the fleet is being used.

Interesting, 7 road wheels that are much smaller than the ones used in T-72/90 series.

Yeah...almost looks T-80-style to me.

Does Omsk have anything to do with manufacture/overhaul/upgrade of military vehicles anymore?

Posted

Are we certain of that assumption? I could easily see a stretched T-72 using the same roadwheels, It would actually give the designer the room to correct the faults of the T-72 Chassis.

@Gavin

Omsk is now owned by Uralvagonzavod. ;)

@Ben Dejo road wheels are different, more similiar to T-80's road wheels.
