Mike Steele Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Speak USians...... it makes no odds for me....I will be there before and after.Well since I'm driving i can be there early if it would help.
sunday Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 You guys actually want to go to Mordor (NY/NJ) ? Well, there is that Iowa-class battleship to see...
Fritz Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I think second plan would be better, as one could not visit a BB in less than four hours. I'm just throwing out ideas, we'll come up with an actual plan once enough folks show interest in going this way.If we do a NYC day we definitely should go through the Met and see at least the historical arms collection there.
BansheeOne Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 If the range event should be on Monday/Tuesday and we go the NY route, with a seven hour drive to Lewisburg I would do USSs New Jersey and Intrepid and a little look at the the city with sufficient time allocated to do it properly, put the whole DC stuff with NASM proper, Udvar-Hazy and general touristy things at the end, with Quantico and various ACW sites or similar in between, then fly back from Washington. I find Lufthansa flies into JFK rather than EWR, but arrival remains 1325 local. However, there's actually a nonstop TXL-EWR link by United which leaves later and arrives in Newark 1300, possibly a better option.
Fritz Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I have flown EWR-TXL 1-2 times. I believe that's what I did last time I was visiting. Normally I fly EWR-MUC. JFK is also fine, though EWR is for me personally way more accessible (I live 15 min away). Regarding accommodation, unfortunately I can't offer any as my place is really tiny (small studio, basically, and can't have guests stay over). At most we could dump luggage there if needed. I'll have to look into what makes the most sense. If you arrive at EWR, I suppose it's best to find a hotel in the area, so, arrive, leave luggage at hotel, however by then it will be at least 3pm, if that's on a weekend, intrepid is open until 6 so we can do it if we rush I guess. Maybe better to go to NY straight away from the airport, perhaps leave the luggage there (my place is in the opposite direction) and then go back to get it and go to hotel from there. Leave early in the morning -> BB62.

Mike Steele Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Nothing like a bit of mission creep... Of course not of them have thought on how their going to secure their weapons before/after they want to go into Mordor...
sunday Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Nothing like a bit of mission creep... Of course not of them have thought on how their going to secure their weapons before/after they want to go into Mordor... True. Did not think not foreigners would want to have a extended I&I. Does the training facility have some kind of storage that could be used?
Colin Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 yes I thought would not want to take an AR and Pistol to that place...
Fritz Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) ... didn't think anybody from Europe was bringing guns? Edited March 7, 2015 by Fritz
BansheeOne Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Obviously not. Even if I had some, it's kinda hard to get them on an airplane. We're thus free to go wherever we want, and as we're moving towards the I&I from NY I don't think it should be a problem for the event.
rmgill Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) From a legal standpoint, any of the North America crowd with firearms would be HIGHLY advised to not transport ANY EBR's or handguns (or ammo, or magazines) into DC, New Jersey or New York. All three are exceedingly gun-unfriendly. New Jersey especially so. The Logistics of a side trip with the firearms while returning from WV to any other parts with the arms as part of a side trip to New Jersey to see the BB would be tricky to effect. BTW, the Olympia and Becuna are also in Philly right there on the other side of the river from the USS NJ. Edited March 7, 2015 by rmgill
shep854 Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 At the moment, I'm planning on bringing my AK and PT-92, plus ammo. Now to find an appropriate, inexpensive optic.
Simon Tan Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) Your AK has a optic mounting rail on the side of the receiver? If so you can run a side lever mount. Otherwise you need something like an UltiMAK gas tube. Vortex SPARCs And Primary Arms Micro Dots are a couple of the cheapy red dots that seem to hold up. If you don't have any mag carrying capability, look at the UWgear bandoleer MkIII. It is however hand made and you probably have to order now. Edited March 8, 2015 by Simon Tan
shep854 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Yes, Simon it does have the side-mount. Right now, I'm leaning toward a 1-4x scope, preferably something that doesn't need batteries.
Simon Tan Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Illumination is your friend. Especially daytime grade stuff that works as dots. If you don't want to break the bank, Vortex seems quite decent. Not scuba diving stuff but OK for class.
Simon Tan Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 If you are transiting through any Commie state, please FedEx your stuff.
shep854 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 If you are transiting through any Commie state, please FedEx your stuff.Truly 'Gestapo' in slave states have been known to pay special attention to vehicles with tags from free states.
Simon Tan Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 (edited) Be advised, all those going to NY, NJ, MD and DC need to NOT have guns, mags and ammo on them. Please ensure you make arrangements to have both moved to training site as appropriate. There is secure on site storage. If you plan to do NYC or NJ, make sure you comply with this. I am counting on everyone to take appropriate measures. If you do not know or unclear, please contact me or rmgill. Edited March 10, 2015 by Simon Tan
Fritz Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Once again, the NY suggestion is for the Euro crew, none of whom are going to be bringing anything. It could only be a problem if anybody local wants to join us there and bring their stuff along, however I'd imagine locals know the laws and issues well enough.
Simon Tan Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 I might be through NY too....just to visit some good friends now behind the wire.
shep854 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I will have to just do the up and back to the training event, though touring historic sites with this mod would be memorable! Another time, perhaps.
JasonJ Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I would consider joining if assuming open slots for crunchies and if I wasn't across the Pacific. Supposing I was to go, I would consider bringing my (jointly-owned) Type 99 arisaka which is currently in Texas I have been to the Intrepid 3 or 4 times but I could never get bored of it, great place. Never been to the battleship though. Anyway, enjoy your trips and tactical lessons.
Simon Tan Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 JasonJ....I am flying through Narita. Cmon....though I wouldn't like to have to buy 500 rounds of 6.5 Arisaka.....
