Simon Tan Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) Clean? AK? WTF are you talking about? Optics can be mounted if there are the side rails. ETA:- Anyone got a 74? Edited March 6, 2015 by Simon Tan
T19 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 In honour of GWB I should bring my enfield MK 4 And my Sks for me
Dave Clark Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 And if bringing a Bren, and if Banshee is going to be present, then bring spare barrels for the Bren. Now, if someone had a Sterling to let... Nifty little gun. If you can open and fix the butt!
sunday Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Yep, I would need a specialist in antiques to teach me...
Dave Clark Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Hey, that's my personal weapon you're talking about!
Simon Tan Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Sterlings in the US are either carbines with ridiculous 16" barrels or pistols with the stock welded forward.
sunday Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Simon, we were remembering the visit to the Woolwich Artillery Museum in 2013, where Banshee took a Bren, then its barrel fell off; yours truly tried to collapse the stock of a Sterling, could not, asked the young Gunner for help, he replied that he did not have much experience in those antique weapons, then Dave protested with that personal weapon line. Good times.
Allan W Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I thought the barrel fell off the Bren when you were handling it Sunday?
BansheeOne Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Naw, I lifted the thing to my shoulder and promptly hit the barrel release with my off hand. I just thought about my own service experience and found that the only weapons I was trained on to be still in use are the MG 3 (which is no longer supported and due to be replaced by the MG 5) and the Carl Gustaf M2 (which is only used for illumination in the Bundeswehr anymore). I think I need some space on that old codger bank. Lufthansa has a flight out of TXL at 0845 via FFM, arriving IAD 1325 local. Most importantly, they offer Premium Economy with increased leg space, which I'd find a definite plus after the Seattle trip. AMTRAK leaves from WAS at 1650, which should give ample time for anal probing and transfer from the airport, arrives LYH 2036. However, Google tells me it's still at least two hours by car from there to Lewisburg, so check-in around 2300 - with five hours time shift, I'm not going to be too focussed on the next day no matter what. Would be better to fly United from IAD to ROA, which takes just a little over an hour instead of four on the train, and has the added benefit of under two hours transfer to Lewisburg. Unfortunately flights are only at 1240 and 2205, but there are no earlier arrivals than 1255, and no flights I could catch after work even if I would leave on Thursday. Humph, the date remains somewhat awkward.
Simon Tan Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) Would moving it a day or two forward help? What date are you planning to arrive? I am planning to be in the NOVA region before class and am happy to pick people up and drive them to Lewisburg. We should be able to comfortably fit 3 in a standard car unless you lot pack like wimminz. Edited March 6, 2015 by Simon Tan
BansheeOne Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 The problem is that I'll be lucky to get Friday off because the Bundestag is in session that week. It's unfortunate that 3 October is a Saturday this year, because it's our national holiday and there would usually be no session in the week it's in. I can take the whole subsequent week off with no problem, but all weekends in the last third of the year except 24/25 October (and the holiday season, d'uh) will be somewhat afflicted by having to be on the job either right before, after or both, with an aggregate 20 + hours of travel required, plus time shift. Unless there's a participant who happens to fly DC to Roanoke with a personal aircraft (well, there are some TankNetters with a PPL).
Colin Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) hmmm wonder who flies from Seattle that way? If brought guns I would want to be sure I minimize transfers or crossing the wrong stat lines. So looks like I could fly into Roanoke (ROA). which are the better US airlines? Edited March 6, 2015 by Colin
rmgill Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 In honour of GWB I should bring my enfield MK 4 And my Sks for me I can bring an SMLE or No4 Mk1* as well. Or even a No5.
Simon Tan Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Will moving it to the 5th and 6th be 'a plan'?
Fritz Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) ... 450 mile drive for me, totally doable. Anybody who lands in NY (JFK/EWR) can ride with me but my car is really a 2-seater, so I can't realistically fit more than 1 passenger (and I don't trust the Blazer to do a 1000-mile roundtrip). However I could arrange use of a different car if more people want to go that route. Maybe even a mini-van. As last resort we could rent something. And that would allow you to spend some time in NYC. Stargrunt6 Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I have no idea where I'll be. Not sure if I'll still be in in Jerz. Trying to head south, hopefully Florida. Either way, would love to come. once I get new contract signed and I know where I'm going, I will give definite answers. I'm an alum of both that school and the nearby med school, so I do know the area. Especially food and bars, er, bar (seriously, it's the Irish Pub or it's nothing).
Simon Tan Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Bar...schbar.... when in WV I sip the good stuff from jam jars.
BansheeOne Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Will moving it to the 5th and 6th be 'a plan'? This would be very doable and in fact quite relaxed as I could fly in on the 3rd with no worry about getting off work early or arriving late for acclimatization, either via DC or NY to travel with Fritz as outlined above. But don't go pushing dates around just for me if it makes it harder for the USians who would otherwise simply make it a weekend trip.
Simon Tan Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Speak USians...... it makes no odds for me....I will be there before and after.

I think there are more TNetters based near NYC. Also, NY is NY, but DC has the Udvar-Hazy...
Fritz Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) Also, NY is NY, but DC has the Udvar-Hazy... Been there, absolutely awesome. Wouldn't mind going again if Euro-TN decides to go through there. However, NJ has this http://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/ And NYC has this http://intrepidmuseum.org/ A possible route would be land in NY (EWR), see the battleship (2h drive from EWR), proceed to DC (another 2h from battleship), see more stuff. Or spend a day in NYC, then say leave in the morning, see the battleship, end up in DC in the afternoon/evening. See udvar-hazy next day, also I guess do a general quick tour of DC. Then proceed to WV. Edited March 7, 2015 by Fritz
sunday Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) Drats! Post accidentally deleted. USS New Jersey would be very nice. Also, spending a day in NYC should give time to visit USS Intrepid. I think second plan would be better, as one could not visit a BB in less than four hours. Edited March 7, 2015 by sunday
Simon Tan Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Well you can have TF NY make their way down to rendezvous with TF DC before moving off to Obj WV. I will probably be in DC collecting folk and/or gear for the class.
Mike Steele Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) You guys actually want to go to Mordor (NY/NJ) ? Edited March 7, 2015 by Mike Steele
