Stargrunt6
The Briar Inn and Hampton Inn are all in close proximity. All are fine. One thing: Hampton Inn is not as nice as other Hampton Inns. But it's still ok. Holiday Inn Express would be the nicest one there. PM me for any questions about hotels, Lewisburg, and such.
BansheeOne
So, any development of interest in ancillary activities? I really want to book flights and quarters, and register for the kleine Grenzverkehr via ESTA.

Back in the '80s, my dad had a quad and he was back up and active in just a couple of weeks. Hopefully, there has been a quantum leap in understanding and technique. Fritz
In all seriousness who will be riding from NYC? So far the only one confirmed is Banshee. I cannot confirm yet whether I will be around after the main events.
sunday
I am a bit undecided, as of now. Sorry.
BansheeOne
Well, as there seems little interest for post-class activities in the Virginia-DC area, maybe we should indeed just run straight back to NJ-NY, with maybe just some looks on the way. It would simplify airline booking, and frankly I've been somewhat sorry about just planning a hasty afternoon right after stepping off the plane for NYC. Maybe we could pass through DC for just a glimpse at the usual postcard motives going either up or down, or if we manage to have a full day, still take at least the original Air and Space Museum. My itinerary would then look something like this: Sat 3 October - arrive Newark. Meet with Fritz. Check into hotel. Crash. Sun 4 October - get on the road to WV, stopping for USS New Jersey on the way. Mon/Tue 5/6 October - rifle class. Wed 7 October - back on road, pass through DC. If possible, stay over? Thu/Fri 8/9 October - semi-independent activities in NY. Sat 10 October - fly out from Newark. Either way, I want to get going. Hotel recommendation for Newark would be nice, too. Fritz
Well I could drop you off in DC and from there transport to pretty much anywhere interesting in the area should be no problem. Train DC-NY is about 2 hours I think? Once you're back to NY I should be available after work. I'll look into hotels in the area (absolutely NOT in Newark though )
Fritz
This seems to be decent and inexpensive http://www.orbitz.com/hotel/United_States--NJ/South_Plainfield/Holiday_Inn_SOUTH_PLAINFIELD-PISCATAWAY.h47511/ If you want to look yourself, look for hotels near (preferably south from) 07922, and also near I-95 or the Garden State Parkway
BansheeOne
Right, I see Union Station is just half a kilometer from the Capitol, and the Amtrak Northeast Regional takes about 3:25 to Penn Station, the Acela Express 2:50, each going once per hour until 2000. Easy enough; I guess hotels near the Mall are not cheap, but for one night I'm prepared to put up with some luxury. I could take a small day bag and leave most of the stuff in your car for handover upon reunion, so I don't have to drag it through/lock it up in DC prior to boarding the train on the other day. It looks though like for shuttling in and out of NYC I would be dependent upon you since public transport all seems to go the wrong way; not going to try my hand on the city's traffic with a rental. Fritz
A few years ago I was visiting DC with no prior plans, just entered the first hotel that looked decent and got a room with no reservation for about $120; and it was prolly 15-20 min away walk from the capitol, so don't be scared. I'll also ask my friends who live in the area for recommendations. Getting in an out of NYC is not really a big deal, you can take PATH to Hoboken or Newark train station and these are both pretty easy for me to get to. Just make a plan what you'd like to see in the NYC area.
BansheeOne
Any particular reason not to take a hotel near Newark Penn and Liberty International then rather than diverting way south? It's not like I intend to go on urban safari there. Of course if it's a magnitude 5.0 urban war zone on the E5M scale, I see the wisdom.
Fritz
Weeellll you could I gues stay at an airport hotel. Penn station is IN Newark, so I just wouldn't recommend staying near it, and you don't really have to http://www.njtransit.com/rg/rg_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=AirportConnectionsTo The train goes everywhere
BansheeOne
Okay, how about this: Thu 8 OctoberDC day tour - National Air and Space Museum, Mall sights, possibly out to Arlington National Cemetery; some of that might be done the previous afternoon/evening1855 - leave Union Station with 2126 Acela Express2133 - arrive Newark Penn Station, meet for transfer to hotel Fri 9 OctoberNYC day tour - USS Intrepid, Liberty Island, WTC, Times Square, Empire State Building, etc.Transportation end points: Edison or Metuchen, NJ - Penn Station, NYC with NJ Transit (or WTC/33rd Street with PATH, changing at Newark Penn; or meet at Hoboken or Newark Penn); are tickets combination NJT/PATH/other? Sat 10 OctoberCheck out of hotel; do everything not covered previous day1805 - fly out from EWR
Fritz
You can pay for PATH using a NYC subway pay-per-ride card (Metrocard). But NJ Transit tickets are separate. If you do stay at an airport hotel (they seem a bit on the pricey side) you can take the train directly from the airport to NYC and be completely independent. Btw one interesting thing to see around DC that we haven't mentioned yet is the CIA museum. I'd like to see that. Another is the National Electronics Museum (radars & satellites) near Baltimore. I haven't seen that one. I've got friends in Baltimore and the harbor area is pretty nice, there's a WW2 sub there and a couple sail ships, and the urban warfare zone that is 2/3 of Baltimore can be easily avoided (unless that's your thing - but then we really need that 50 cal mount). But I guess that part would depend on me staying around.
BansheeOne
Is there a Tom Clancy museum in Baltimore, too? I really don't mind hotel prices if it's just for a night or two; ease and economy of connections matters more. Which would obviously include connections for you; it wouldn't make much sense for you to get up to Newark and collect me from a hotel there for the trip south if you're much closer to the area you suggest. Same for meeting for trips into NYC. Anyway, hotels can wait a few more weeks, but I'm going to go ahead and book flights into and out of Newark for 3 and 10 October. Fritz
Well Newark is actually a very easy connection for me, so if you want to stay at the airport that works fine. We're talking about 10 miles more this or that way, not a big deal.

JasonJ
Any info on how one gets a tourist visa?IIRC with handling the visa stuff for going to Japan.. Look up the US consulate in your country and explain to them that you want to visit some friends for a few days. It's possible that just your passport might be sufficient. But if you need a special tourist visa, they should tell you what you have to do in order to apply. Once you have gathered the stuff (typical a self portrait photo and the application forms filled out), hand it over to them and then they will process the application which may take about 1 week. If it's good, then they will need you to visit the consulate to give them your passport. They may hold it for 2-3 days (or maybe it's within an hour, fuzzy memory) in which they will attach the pretty visa onto one of the pages in the passport. Although, depending on the countries concerned, things might be different. Oh, if there are any hiccups, the whole thing may take a couple of months so don't delay Edited August 16, 2015 by JasonJ
BansheeOne
AFAIK all EU countries, and definitely Spain, come under the Visa Waiver Program. The old I-95 (?) forms that had to be filled out on the plane have been replaced by the online ESTA system which will give you authorization to enter for up to 90 days at a time for two years, now coming with a fee. Did this for the 2010 I&I in Seattle and had absolutely no problems, but need to renew it. Of course horror stories about DHS drones who decide on the spot to put you on the next flight back at the airport of entry due to some gut feeling abound, but it seems typically both sides have behaved somewhat stupid on such occasions. Fritz
Any info on how one gets a tourist visa? I don't think you need one. HOWEVER at the entry point you will be asked questions and you should have your story prepared. Now that I think about it, perhaps "well I'm coming to shoot assault rifles for two days" is not really the best possible story... better come up with something like visiting a friend in NYC, sightseeing etc. May need a written invitation? If so I'll prep one, no problems. Edited August 16, 2015 by Fritz
