This is an notification of the proposed TANKNET 2-DAY TACTICAL RIFLE CLASS tentatively to be held on MONDAY 10/5 and TUESDAY 10/6 at PRACTICAL FIREARMS TRAINING in ALDERSON, WV (USA)

The facility is open Saturday and Sunday for early birds. Please let me know if you are arriving early as it is a private facility and I need to arrange for entry. There is secure storage for gear on site.

It is open to all present and former TankNetters who can find their way there. There will probably be enough guns for those of us not of Sam by the ones who are. Please clicky the links below in Colin's helpful post.

If you are travelling slick, please try and arrange with others for your hardware and cool guy gear. If you have no idea what you are doing...please say so and we can help you out. The recommendation is an AR with a red dot or low power optic with sling and a minimum of 3 magazines. This is the default and by far the most successful combination. Other platforms like AKs and HKs generally have more issues overall but you can use them.

Ammunition can probably be arranged on site but you probably have to pay for it beforehand. Work on 800-1000 rounds over the 2 days. DO NOT BRING STEEL CORED AMMUNITION LIKE M855 OR 7N6. It pits the steel targets.

Most students stay in Lewisburg, WV which is about 15 minutes from the training facility.

ACCOMODATIONS

PFT has a corporate rate at the Lewisburg Holiday Inn Express. You must call the hotel directly to get this rate.

Otherwise there is a frills free motel in Alderson called The Riverview for $60 a night.

FEEDING

We find our own food and bring our own munchies. There is a fridge on site. Lunch is usually from the nearby Subway...usually someone goes to get the order while we jam mags, talk shop etc. Dinner tends to be a short affair in Lewisburg. There is an Applebees, a couple of nicer places, some fast food joints and a Chinese buffet.

TRANSPORT

There is plenty of parking at the range facility. If your junk is in the trunk, you probably want to bring it. Those running slick can just share a ride up to the range. You don't need 4x4 but a sports car will have trouble with the slope.

SHIPPING ADDRESS

TBC

Please go to Pgpft.com and avail yourselves of the relevant information. I am unable to link anything from here due to a glitch with my account.

I urge our Yurrup cohort to join. We can roll it into a quick visit of NOVA sites like the Aerospace Museum etc. Some of this was covered in the DC I&I but there's loadsa new stuff that was not there then like the USMC Museum in Quantico.

Any sidebars need to remember that some places (NY,NJ,DC,MD etc.) are not the land of the free and simply going there with guns is a felony. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD.

Looks possible, though the preceding weekend would be better; the last two weeks of October are non-session, but I will have to be on the job on Monday 2 November. I have wanted to get back on the left side of the pond I&I-wise, and indeed would want to stay for more than a weekend given price and duration of flights, so would probably arrive some days early for the museum stuff, but only attend the actual event Saturday if the date can't be moved forward.

What sorts of mag carriers and harness are best for this sort of class?

And I'm still wobbling between FS2000, FAL or Semi-bren (have to borrow one from a mate in NoVA unless I buy one from Len) to run this course with. I may bring all three and ammo for each and see. Course that means three different sets of web gear.

Do NOT use the BREN. 10 hour training day.

Battle Belts and light chest rigs work best. Dump pouches are good but cargo pockets work OK for stowing empties.

Battle rifles can use less rounds.....you can get by with 1 hit vis 2 for 5.56 or 7.62AK.

We can probably get the training fee to $200/day if we fill 8 and then open it to others. We do however need at least 8.......

And if bringing a Bren, and if Banshee is going to be present, then bring spare barrels for the Bren. :D

Now, if someone had a Sterling to let... Nifty little gun.

So, Simon, what do you recommend? If I could make it, I should need something with optics, and cheap ammo.

AR15/M4 clone?

Posted

I believe I need an invite and fill out a Form 6 to attend, will check up the latest requirements. Must also appeal to wife.....

Posted

sunday.... AR 15 clone is best since it is the default. I am sure someone has a old Aimpoint or sumptin you can borrow. We can always check if PFT has one you can use for a bottle of decent whiskey or some ceegars.

Colin...Form 6? As in temporary importation? What are you proposing to bring?

Oy, it's not my fault the designers seem to have failed imagining that somebody would fire the thing from the shoulder standing up!

3/4 October - unfortunately the week before, parliament is also in session, though I might be able to take Friday off (we have an intern at the time). I guess the best way to fly is into DC, which is at least 10.30 hours via Frankfurt, not much less than Seattle, plus transit; some decompression would be in order. I wouldn't want to show up at the range all jetlagged, or flying barrels would be my least concern.

I know the NoVA/DC area and if nothing contrives to make this impossible for me to go, I'm sure I could collect a body or two at the airport. Blitzing in I66 to get someone coming in on a late flight would be easy peasy.

And the semi-Bren if I were to bring one would be mostly for S&G. Gotta finish setting up the FAL with some near range optics and backup irons first.

I think Colin is talking at ATF Form 6NIA.

Also, I propose that folks bring a case of some choice beer. I'll try to bring a supply of Lambics and flemish sours, possibly some good belgian strong ales.

Oh, Simon, did you want me try to get Oleg involved?

Is that the date? Firm? If so, pencil me down. I'll mark my work and home calendars as being unavailable.

Is Washington DC the nearest major airport?

I think he was thinking of Oleg's models more than of the man himself. :D

Unless there are Direct flights from Yurrope to Roanoke or Richmond VA, Reagan or Dulles are the closest big airports.

Now folks who flew into DC or Philly or New York could take AMTRAK down to Lynchburg and get collected from there. The Crescent runs daily from New York City to New Orleans (running from New York, through Philly, Baltimore, DC, Manassas, Charlottesville, Lynchburg and points south).

Map of the region. Drive time from DC to Richmond on I95 is about an hour and a half at 75 mph depending on traffic. I81 usually runs pretty good.

Please ask Oleg if he is interested. We prolly not his usual material.

T19.....you should.

T19.....you should.

He takes photos of fat old guys too. Though they have less sex appeal than his usual stable of models...

I'll ping him and let him know. He'll probably like the international flavor.

Im down 83 pounds, so no old fat guy here

Wish I could take my own guns... but that might be way more bother than worth... being how funky the USA is about importing guns

It's one of the things we're trying to fix. The SAF has been fighting states over laws not allowing resident aliens to get carry licenses. They've also hit the fed.gov on various aspects of GCA'68. Eventually I would like to see it such that someone from a nation like Canada who has a license for what ever they own, so long as that's not restricted here (NFA for example) then they would be able to bring it in. Arguably, it should be as complex as bringing a car into the US. Show up at the border, declare the firearm(s) have the SN checked, sign a form, then go about their business in the US.

Frankly, I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed constitutional carry in states that have it.

Still, the ATF Form 6 should not be that hard to file. I don't think there's a fee either.

Looking around, it looks like some of the trouble is not the rules, but the fact that Customs and Border Patrol dufuses don't know the rules.

I'm in. I plan on driving so any one on the planed route (KS-MO-KY-WV)(exception can be made for IN and OH) can go with. IL is to be avoided because they don't honor any CC permit.

If optics could be mounted, then pretty nice. Also I've heard AKs are easy to clean.
