Considering the US Marines are dependent on the hull they are sitting on going home, im not seeing an issue personally.

As far as operational, she has already conducted strikes in Syria. That might be a limited operational capability, but still a real one.

As for British weapons, the F35B has already done trials with ASRAAM. It gets Meteor by 2024/2025. Spear 3 around the same time.

Lots of people deal with what's available at the moment.... Some people like to think about jam tomorrow. Might want to slow down the frantic chest pumping .

20 years ago I was confidently predicting we would not get 2 carriers, we would be lucky if we got one, and the Americans were sure to cancel F35B because they were over extended on the F35 project and would concentrate on what the airforce and the Navy wanted. True, we may have veered close once or twice, but it didnt happen did it?

Ive been cured of gross cynicism. Sometimes really remarkable things happen, and one has to be incredibly stubborn not to notice it. But please, dont let me stop you, someone has to do it.

Well reading the thread on Twitter, the intent would presumably have been to avoid adopting CV01 and buying ostensibly cheaper platform. Which looking at how worn out Ark Royal was, and how much it cost to adapt her to carry phantoms, was not such a crazy idea.

As it was, CV01 was trimmed to make it acceptable to the chancellor, to the point where the Royal Navy was hoping it would be cut because it was crap. Im not sure delaying entry into 1982 would have made sense either, seeing as the Conservatives were hoping to cut the Invincibles to put the money into BAOR. Really, it would have been delaying the inevitable. We couldnt even keep HMS Blake and HMS Tiger operational due to manning issues, one of these was probably a non starter.

In similar vein, would it have made more sense to buy a Forrestal, or 2 Queen Elizabeths? Or even, dare I say it, a Ford?

No idea if for example Forrestal would have been substantially cheaper than CVA01, but that's not my point. Both of the US vessels were rather old at the time and in fact the Americans decomissioned them just a few years after RN considered buying them. That would be pretty much replacing one worn out carrier with another worn out carrier.

The crew requirement for a Ford is over 4000 officers and men.

The basic crew (without airgroup) for a QE is less than 700 with 1600 including the airgroup and anyone else along for the ride.

That SPEAR EW looks good, finally a replacement for ALARM?

PS I don't see any chest thumping in this post, just information.

That V-22 looks twitchy as hell to fly, does it not have auto hover/land like the F-35B?

It didn't look any worse than a helo in gusty conditions.
