Thank you for that, thats very interesting.

I cant rmember if I told you this, so appologies if heard it before. When my cousin visited Japan about 15-20 years ago, she met a very old man on the street. He asked if she was English, she said she was, and he was really very happy about it. It turned out (if im remembering correctly) he was part of a delegation, or perhaps even the Embassy, in England  during, or immeditately after WW1 (He must have been pretty sprightly for his age) He as glad to meet someone British again, because he always held us in high regard.

So yes, I guess there are still links there which we can reforge. Now if we can just get the French to crank up the 'Entente Cordiale' we might just be onto a winner...

As I recall, the entente had a third partner, though unofficially at first.  I don't think you really want to allied with them again.

Just for some context while all this training is going on..

After departing Yokosuka, USS Carl Vinson along with USS Lake Champlain, USS Chafee, and USS Tulsa headed to the South China Sea.

USS Benfold, also in the SCS, conducted a FONOP at Mischief Reef.

Who is that cavitation queen of a flat top?

That's Izumo. Maybe she farted. Don't know the reason.

It is in the middle of modification ATM actually. If QE was to joint-train with one of the big ones, I would have expected it to be Kaga for that reason, not Izumo. USMC is to trial run F-35B on Izumo next month or two.

It could be she has Prairie/Masker installed, then. I think the USN LHD/LHA do not equip it.

Remarkable the smooth wake of QE.

I remember doing a search for that sort of thing and found very little general stuff about it. So I can't say much about it.

She was out training with 4 F35s, among other things. Been a long time since we operated 2 carriers in different oceans.

Thanks, amigo. I've shifted my CP back to the disUnited States for a little while. Simply amazing times....

There was that Chinese curse about interesting times... for historians. However, I think most historians would pretty much prefer to research them than to live during them! 😄

There are some images of speed and turning trials for QE and PoW that show a more traditional wake, but it does seem that many images seem to be absent the classic cavitation, with surface smoothing being in evidence. The Kelvin wake looks pretty normal.

The main problem is that it's not easy to tell how fast the ship is moving in most images - it's quite possible that she had slowed to allow the line abreast formation to look neat, but it's also possible that she's really "quiet" at normal cruise speeds.

Izumo should be able to do 30kn, but perhaps that speed is only the absolute maximum. Wikipedia page on QE states a speed "higher than 25kn". Curiously, the propellers are fixed pitch, but adjustable "during the service life of the ship", in shipyard or the like, according to this.

Perhaps the most sensible thing to do is to suppose we do not know the speed of every ship in that photo OP.

It looks to me that Izumo accelerated to her position in the photo op while the other 2 slowed a bit, note the escorts are also at speed while the AOR is not.

Here it seems to be station keeping:

izumo-23

Izumo is equipped with Prairie masker according to this:
