urbanoid
All of the Bears in service were reportedly built in 1980s and early 1990s. That makes them at least two decades younger than the youngest B-52s. Add Kh-55 on board and...
Stuart Galbraith
Yeah they seem all to be new builds. I think the last ones were built as late as 1992 IIRC. It really is the Russian B52. Probably a bit noiser though. As far as replacement, they are trying to get the TU-160 production line going again, and have made some progress apparently with restoring some capability to that end. As far as long term replacement, there is supposedly a project to build a new long range bomber, the initial concept art looks like a flying wing. Vulcanski? urbanoid
I can't see how they could afford replacing all Bears with Blackjacks. Expensive to build, more expensive to operate.
Stuart Galbraith
Well that appears at least to be the plan. I didnt say it was an affordable plan.
DougRichards
Wouldn't it be hilarious if they sent a B52 up to greet a Tu-95? "HI! WE'RE STILL FLYING OURS, TOO. WANNA DANCE?" No Buffs but will a Vulcan do? Talk about a Cold War memorial flight: A Bear, a BUFF and a Vulcan! You would need a Victor and a Hustler as well.
