Interceptions Of The Tu-95 Bear And Other Lesser Aircraft

On November 27th, Japanese fighters scrambled to meet a flight of 11 Chinese aircraft flying near and some passing through the Okinawan islands although they did not violate Japanese airspace. However it was unusual because of the number of aircraft involved. 8 H-6 bombers, 1 Tu-154 intelligence gathering, 1 Y-8 intelligence gathering model, and 1 Y-8 early warning aircraft.

I thought that the tailfin top fairing was odd, having not seen one like it before.

"A handful of Tu-142MK machines was built as submarine communications relay aircraft, reeling out a long trailing antenna from a rig under the belly to transmit and receive low-frequency signals that could penetrate through water. These machines, designated "Tu-142MR", a distinctive thimble nose radome in place of the nose glazing and a fairing like that of the MAD system on the tailfin, but mounted forward instead of to the rear. NATO codenamed them "Bear-J". Incidentally, NATO never assigned a "Bear-I" codename; NATO didn't use the "I" suffix because it was too easily confused with "1"."

Sounds like a sexier version equivalent to the E-6 TACMO

Wouldn't it be hilarious if they sent a B52 up to greet a Tu-95? "HI! WE'RE STILL FLYING OURS, TOO. WANNA DANCE?"

 

No Buffs but will a Vulcan do?

 

 

Talk about a Cold War memorial flight: A Bear, a BUFF and a Vulcan! :wub:
