OK, so I decided to start building models (again) after a 20 year hiatus. I decided to build the tanks I enjoy playing in World of Tanks, which means a horde of Cold War Tamiya 1/35 kits inbound.

I'm working on the Chieftain Mk 5 kit and I'e got a question about the paint job. I've read all of Bob Griffin's books on Chieftain, and I have several rattle cans of paint, and I want to know what paints to paint the hull. Bob says in his Photosniper books that it was dark green and black in uneven patterns for service in BAOR. So if I have Tamiya rattle cans, should I use the Dark Green and Black? Will that be about as close as I can get for it? What about BATUS tanks? Is that the same Dark Yellow as the Wehrmacht colors? Thanks!

Tamiya has NATO Green and NATO Black that works.

As for BATUS, NATO Green and Desert Yellow looks good enough.

Tamiya should have all those in rattle cans.

My local hobby store only had no rattle cans of the NATO colours. I have the acrylic jars, but the dark green rattle cans look like the BAOR colors, so I was looking for a more confident answer. The instructions say flat green/dark green for BAOR and, erm, the same for BATUS

Hmmmm.... It's been awhile since I browsed the Tamiya spray can line. What kinds of green does your shop have? ISTR that Bronze Green looks ok for the green in BATUS. Back when I was into this hobby, I was planning to build a whole line of CR2 tanks with the yellow-green BATUS ones among them. Bronze green and black works well IMO for BAOR. From the reference pix in Concord books, the green-black difference isn't that much visible in BAOR Chieftains. Of course, lighting and other factors at the time the photos were taken and publication of these photos in the reference books would make for sometimes varying looking colors.

Again, the old rule of thumb: if it looks the part, then it's ok. Unless one is a real nitpicker and aiming for a model competition.

Also, in the end, the exact shade of green and black and yellow wouldn't matter so much if you're going to lay down some clear coats. I'd personally paint the models in gloss paints plus a thin coat of clear gloss for ease of decal application, then dull everything with a flat coat. Weathering will further change the look of the model.

Well, I built a Panther ausf A (Just to build a kit), am nearly done with the Chieftain, then have the following planned to build:

  • Leopard 1
  • Type 61
  • Type 74
  • T-62A
  • Centurion Sh'ot (Have it already, but photoetched parts scare me lol)

Then a couple of modern tanks with...

  • Challenger 1
  • Challenger 2
  • Merkava Mk 3

Then somewhere slotted in there if I can find a kit that isn't made by Accurate Armour and costs a kidney transplant...

  • Conqueror

They're all going in my classroom because why not?
