Libya Irrigation

OVERVIEW
APR 29, 2024
In Libya, where 90% of land is desert and just 2% gets enough rainfall for cultivation, irrigation is required to grow food. This Timelapse shows a series of center-pivot irrigation fields near the Kufra Oasis, one of Libya’s largest agricultural projects. Irrigation throughout Libya relies on the “Great Man-made River” — a 2,820-kilometer (1,750-mile) network of pipes supplying fresh water obtained from underground fossil aquifers.

The so-called time lapse doesn't work for me. It just says 1984 the whole time. I guess Orwell would have approved.

@ink To be short, under Gadafi in desert there were water, now, after democratization, in desert there is only sand

Fossil water is not replenishable, anyway.

Lybia did not have an Arab Spring, but an Arab Winter.

After two and a half years of fighting and several broken agreements, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have put a temporary halt in the conflict between the Congolese army and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebellion in eastern Congo's North Kivu province.

M23 rebels launched the offensive in the mineral-rich region at the end of 2021. Since then, they have seized large swathes of territory in an effort to gain a share of North Kivu's major deposits of copper, gold and diamonds.

Some of the latest stuff.

The Sudanese army launched artillery and airstrikes in the capital, Khartoum, on Thursday as it seeks to recapture areas taken by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) early in the country's 17-month civil war.

Witnesses reported heavy shelling and fighting as army troops tried to cross bridges across the Nile connecting the three adjoining cities that make up the greater capital: Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri.

A channel representing the remnants of Wagner PMC reported that Mikhail Prikhodko, commander of the 9th Assault Unit, call sign "Michael," was killed in Mali on October 12. He was leading a mobile group deployed to "contain an Islamist breakthrough" when he sustained fatal injuries.

Things very iffy in Moçambique. 1500+ plus prisoners escaped from capital Maputo prison after weeks of protests left already almost 1000 deaths since "elections" continued the 50 year country ruler Frelimo socialist party since independence from Portugal.

Frelimo is member of "moderate" International Socialist full of "human rights" lawyers...

So is there an informally French sub Saharan colony that made tomato paste first?

I assume it was supposed to be 'formerly'.

They might invent ketchup soon. Any day now, just need to perform a... uh... special culinary operation.
