Gman Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Any word on a worthwhile WWII tank simulator on the horizon ? Yes, I know about the beer and pretzels fantasy fun of World of Tanks, but that's more of an arcade game with cold war elements.
Sardaukar Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Someone really should make WW II version of Steal Beasts. Panzer Elite was last that style of game, I think.
jwduquette1 Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 War Thunder Ground Combat is supposed to be a lot more "realistic" than World of Tanks
Max H Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 WT:GF has big issues, but has merit. Maybe when it gets out of beta in 5 years time
Peasant Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 This looks like the most appropriate thread for this:
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 I loved Panzer elite when it came out. Ive probably still got the disks somewhere.
MiGG0 Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 (edited) Steel Fury was good also. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1351450/Steel_Fury_Kharkov_1942/ Edited May 31, 2024 by MiGG0
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 yes, I didnt play it enough, but it was very well done.
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 I suppose I ought to mention the IL2 DLC. Its got its problems, no dynamic campaign, the fact you seem to be largely doing everything yourself in the tank. But the gunnery is rock solid. It also looks beautiful, I just wish they would do more with it.
Ssnake Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 I'm not very familiar with those games, but it looked like WoT to me.
Sardaukar Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 I am still hoping Steel Beast producers make WW II sim I bet it'd have market...but might be too hard-core for most.

old_goat Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 To be honest, I think IL-2 Tank crew is an utter failure. Yes the vehicles are modeled beautifully, with amazing interiors, and lots of good features. But it is a completely soulless, empty mod, (or showcase of what the engine is capable of) for basically a flight sim. But what is a tank sim without infantry? I think it is nothing. Worthless. Also, dynamic campaign is absolutely needed. If you want a more or less recent WW2 tank sim, the only option is Steel Fury. It is also not perfect, but generally, enjoyable. It is also moddable, but sadly the quality of mods is so-so. A good successor of Panzer Elite is direly needed now. Unfortunately there is nothing in development yet, but there may be some hope. I think Gunner Heat PC will be a great success eventually, and it may inspire some people to create a similar tank sim, but with ww2 setting.
Stuart Galbraith Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 IL2 might be developed more. I did hear tell they were goign to extend it to Normandy, ive no idea if they intend to add infantry, but it strikes me as if it would be an excellent idea. I woudlnt say its a failure. Distinctly under developed? Well even the il2 forums say that, so yes, its obviously true.

Infanry can absolutely kick your ass if you arent careful, even if you are in a Tiger (that is obviously in a mod). GHPC devs also said that infantry will be a gamechanger. This is why I say that a tank sim without infantry is an epic fail.
Peasant Posted May 31, 2024 Posted May 31, 2024 (edited) Found this cool series of video made using "IL-2 Tank Crew". Better than most crap that comes out on Netflix today. Quote Quote This is why I say that a tank sim without infantry is an epic fail. Indeed. Which is why Warthunder, despite it's alleged "realism" is not that far removed from it's cousin, World of Tanks. Games that incorporate combined arms warfare, like these tank sims or even games that are not dedicated tank sims ,like Post Scriptum or Hell Let loose are infinitely more realistic, due to this simple fact. MiGG0 Posted June 22, 2024 Posted June 22, 2024 (edited) Just got IL-2 tank crew (huge discount on Steam) and it is… decent. Ofcourse missing career mode is big drawback, but you can use Pat Wilsons campaing generator with tank crew also. Ofcourse missing infantry is other, but their are MG and AT position to somewhat compensate that. Grapics are good and damage model seems decent. There are some weird cases T-34/Sherman glacis withstandind 88mm/75mm L70 hits but I havent seen totally bollocks in it so far. Edited June 22, 2024 by MiGG0
Stuart Galbraith Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 Hmm, not seen that myself, but there probably isnt any such guns in the kursk campaign. Its infuriating, because with just a little more effort, they would have a sim that would likely leave IL2 in the shade. But maybe thats what they are scared of.
MiGG0 Posted June 23, 2024 Posted June 23, 2024 Agree, it has lot of potential to be great tank game. At the moment it just feels unfinished.

Maybe Im wrong, but I think I read somewhere that it is the end for Tank Crew. Not very popular among players, and will not get more expansions. Damn, we really need Panzer Elite 2 or something...
Stuart Galbraith Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 I heard they are expanding it for Normandy, presumably thats still on the cards.
