German Cos Of Usareur Appointed

Recommended Posts

The German and Polish navies signed an agreement today to establish a joint Submarine Operating Authority. As far as I can see this amounts to two Polish officers being attached to the German Maritime Operations Center to give Poland access to the Submarine Broadcast Control Authority there, which will relay orders to boats of both nations.

I learned about some additional projects from the reports on today's event. Besides the naval cooperation mentioned a couple times, there is also Project Apollo between the Luftwaffe and Dutch Army, which is aimed at putting the German V/SHORAD troops of Air Defense Group 61 under Dutch command; having the Luftwaffe run Ozelot and Mantis was very strange from the beginning, anyway.

The cooperation under Project Apollo seems to go a bit further than the above, and in fact the link also mentions the establishment of a joint deployable air and missile defense unit; it's probably to that end that 500 troops from both nations recently conducted Patriot live fire exercises on Crete. So far the only practical step of integration appears to be two Dutch officers serving with Flugabwehrraketengeschwader 1 though.

Brigadegeneral Kai Rohrschneider is to take over the position of chief of staff of US Army Europe from BG Markus Laubenthal. RUMINT has it that Laubenthal is going to take command of 1. PzDiv.

Flugabwehrraketengruppe 61 with 450 troops will be officially assigned to Defensie Grondgebonden Luchtverdedigingscommando in Vredepeel today. As in all recent European integration projects of the Bundeswehr, they will remain based where they are now, at Todendorf, Schleswig-Holstein. In purely national deployments, they will of course be led by the German Deployed Missions Command in Potsdam.

Rohrschneider will leave next month to take over as deputy commander of the Bundeswehr's Multi-National Operative Command in Ulm, which will also host buildup of NATO's new Joint Support Enabling Command tasked with facilitating logistics for deployments under the alliance's re-assurance policy towards Eastern European members. His successor is supposed to be BG Hartmut Renk, currently deputy commander of the Heer's Training Command.

Looks like from the German side it will be an abovementioned Panzergrenadiere battalion, and one Leopard 2A5 tank battalion from 34th Armoured Cavalry Brigade from Polish side.

Interestingly this seems to be a rotating scheme on the Polish side. Partnership just switched from 34th to 10th Armored Cavalry Brigade; there was a recent joint exercise at the Jägerbrück area near Torgelow, just this side of the common border. Merging PzGren Brigade 41's Griffin with 10th Brigade's armored winged arm and sword for the common insignia is kinda clever.

Joint training of Korps Mariniers and Seebataillon on Texel Island (Dutch).

Another joint exercise focussing on disaster relief with HNLMS Johan de Witt out of Sint Maarten planned for this month has been turned into the real thing by hurricane Dorian hitting the Bahamas.

Seems the Bahamas deployment is actually a tri-national action with the French. Or maybe they just picked up some French troops already in theater.

Sometimes it's a shame this forum doesn't have a like button. It's a small world, but one of my wife's oldest friends is on the Snellius.

The Bundeswehr's Panzerpionierbattalion 130 in Minden will be reformed into a British-German amphibious engineer battalion operating the M3 amphibian used by both armies from 1 October to secure sustained rapid amphibious bridging capabilities for NATO. The move was announced today in the Bundeswehr inspector general's order of the day, which also mentioned the establishment of a new signals battalion from 1 April to ensure 10th Panzer Division's C³ capabilities, and the extension/reactivation of eight ammunition and materiél depot sites which had previously been slated for civilian conversion, staggered until 2029.

The first British officer has been integrated into the headquarters of the future joint engineer bridging battalion since June, with four more to follow until year's end. With that, working language becomes English. FOC with two German and one British M3 amphibious engineer plus a German folding pontoon bridging company is planned for 2023.

Well, English is NATO language anyway, so it's really just another case of "train as you fight". Particularly for a unit that will serve as an alliance-wide enabler with a unique capability.

Or they are just preparing for the coming EU annexion of Scotland like these Dutch and German marines.
