Libyan forces make gains against ISIL in Sirte

Soldiers capture two barracks, a bridge and an intersection in ISIL's stronghold city, military says.

12:45 p.m.

A media official with forces allied to the U.N.-brokered government in Libya says Islamic State

group militants are being cornered inside their headquarters, a conference center in the central

Libyan town of Sirte.

Ahmed Hadiya, the head of the media center of the anti-IS operation, told The Associated Press

Thursday that forces advancing from the west and south most recently dismantled the main stage

in Zafarana square, where according to Human Rights Watch at least 49 people were shot,

beheaded or crucified by the militants.

Hadiya says that the forces which are mostly from the western city of Misrata are preparing for

an offensive to seize the Ouagadougou conference center.

Hadiya and the U.N.-backed government say at least 130 people have been killed and 400 injured in

the battle for Sirte.

U.N. approves high seas crackdown on Libya arms smuggling
UNITED NATIONS | BY MICHELLE NICHOLS
The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday unanimously authorized a crackdown on arms smuggling in the high seas off Libya by allowing the inspection of vessels to seize and dispose of illicit weapons.
The European Union proposed the council resolution to expand its naval operation in the Mediterranean, which the 15-member Security Council authorized in October to seize and dispose of boats operated by human traffickers.
The council resolution expressed concern that "arms and related materiel are being used by terrorist groups operating in Libya, including ISIL (Islamic State)."
French Ambassador Francois Delattre told reporters ahead of the vote that the resolution has "the potential to be a game-changer," since a large quantity of arms is smuggled via ship off the coast of Libya.
Libya U.N. envoy Martin Kobler told the Security Council last week that Libya was awash with arms - 20 million pieces of weaponry in the North African state of six million people.
"These weapons do not fall from the sky, but come increasingly through illegal shipments by sea and by land. The arms fuel the conflict. These shipments must end if there is any serious hope of bringing peace to Libya," he said.
The U.N. Security Council imposed an arms embargo on Libya in 2011 when former leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces cracked down on pro-democracy protesters.
U.N. sanctions monitors last year told the Security Council that Libya needed help from an international maritime force to halt the flow of weapons in and out of the country.
The fall of Gaddafi in 2011 sparked chaos with two competing governments backed by militias scrambling for control of the oil producing country. A power vacuum has allowed Islamic State militants to gain a foothold.
British U.N. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft said the existing arms embargo had not stopped the flow of arms and that illicit weapons in Libya were "enabling terrorists to murder, to maim, to bring yet more chaos to the people of Libya and the region."
A U.N.-backed unity government formed earlier this year is seen by western states as the best hope for uniting Libya's many political factions. Libya's government is allowed to import arms with approval of the Security Council's sanctions committee.
The resolution asks states to "make good-faith efforts to first seek the consent of the vessel's flag state prior to any inspections" and calls upon those flag states to cooperate.

France says 3 soldiers died in accident on Libya intelligence mission
President Francois Hollande said on Wednesday three French soldiers were killed in a helicopter accident in Libya during an intelligence-gathering mission in the North African state.
They are the first confirmed Western military casualties since it became known this year that special forces were operating on the ground in Libya.
"At this moment we are carrying out dangerous intelligence operations (in Libya)," Hollande said in a speech. "Three of our soldiers, who were involved in these operations, have been killed in a helicopter accident."
Paris took a leading role in the NATO air campaign that helped rebels overthrow autocratic leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The country later descended into years of chaos.
French special forces in conjunction with Britain and the United States have been advising forces loyal to eastern Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar, which have been battling Islamists and other opponents in Benghazi for more than two years. French aircraft have been conducting reconnaissance flights since December.
Libyan military officials would not comment on a report that the French nationals were in a helicopter that crashed near Benghazi on Sunday. Officials said at the time that four people died in the crash, all of them Libyan.
Western powers have been backing Libya's unity government, hoping it will seek foreign support to confront Islamic State militants, deal with migrant flows from Libya to Europe and restore oil production to shore up Libya's economy.

By creating false target or using backup TV guidance. Surface-surface mode is an actual feature.

Reminded me of the SA-2s fired by Egyptians against Israeli tanks towards the end of the Yom Kippur War.

An SA-2 is a telephone pole sized weapon. It could be carrying kittens or concrete, it would still scare the fuck out of me personally. Perhaps when it comes to surface to surface delivered kittens...I'm a pussy... :)

Did the Hawk have nuclear warheads? The Nike-Hercules did, but I've never heard of nuclear-tipped Hawks or SA-2s. SA-5s, yes - but that was much bigger & longer-range.

SA-2 had option but it was different missile, not available for export and not very widespread in SSSR either.
