I often find it enlightening to see what others think of what we may consider the final word in a solution, many tanks were built and indeed a number of them still run on the AVDS 1790 diesel system. In other parts of the world during the 1970s, many tanks were also produced with derivates of the v-2-34 engine, specifically the v-55, and the v-46 diesel engines. Now as it is no secret that there are at least a few examples of the AVDS 1790 that have arrived in Russia, what I wonder about is how they thought of the engineering and advantage/detriment compared to the systems that were employed. I have tried to keep the time of comparison to about the 1970s' so hopefully no one runs afoul of anything that may cause legal implications up to and including an externally induced cerebreal hemmorage.

And anyone who has had practical experience of working on the V-55 and AVDS 1790 please feel free to chime in.

That would be an interesting document to see if it indeed exists. AVDS 1790 is quite a different creature than the Soviet V12 engines.

Whilst we are on it, have they got an evaluation of the British L60? I want to see how many times they could swear in an official publication. :)

we have T-64 with 5TDF(same Jumo 205 ancestor) and most soviet (non-unkrainian) tankers consider T-64 - unreliable piece of junk, so...

here some part from "Вопросы оборонной техники/Questions of defense technology" journal

Oh, I didnt know that. The USSR reverse engineered the Jumo as well? Poor bastards. :D

Thanks, looks like a good website. If you do see a report on that Chieftain the Soviets evaluated, please remember to post it up.

there was program for new tank engine in 1950's, Charomsky create 4TPD 400 hp engine based on Jumo205, in late 1950's 4TPD get one more engine cylinder and became 5TD enigne, and 5TDF after that with 700 hp, first batch have some 100-200 machine hours IIRC

The statements in the journal( "Вопросы оборонной техники/Questions of defense technology") unfortunately describe the trials not very thoroughly, apparently.

and the original reports i suspect that are not available

If the other engines were AK, xTDF were the M16 of the Soviet diesel engines. Require extensive and scrupulous servicing, and gawd forbid the oil you fill is not the one specified for the current ambient temperature.

We should have reverse engineered the Commer diesel instead. What an engine :)

Charomski was a Soviet 2stroke diesel guru before WW2 as well, read up on the TB-7 heavy bomber.

Dunno if all he did was reverse engineer or research purely by himself or if there was just some hints taken from Junkers designs in the time of "friendliness" with Germany, Reich or before.

Ive a film in my collection taken by Brixmis in East Germany, and they managed to film a T64 tank company in its native habitat as it were. The thing that impressed me was, they all were laying their own personal smoke screen, even when they didnt want them to. Very Chieftain like. :)

Harkonnen you magnificent ... :D...This is brilliant, anything more that you may happen to find would make me, and probably Walter very happy.

May need to mechanically Translate,

Dumb question during my first cup of morning coffee, but how does one translate this? Thank you in advance.

google translate. I use chrome.

can you upload it ? :)

I probably better not, I bought it from the Brixmis society and they dont have an unlimited budget.

They say the shop is only open to association members, but I bought from them about 10 years ago and they were ok then with non members. Might be worth emailing them and asking them.

Its the tour footage one you would be wanting. Or there is a very brief fragment of the same film (my copy has rather better colour) here.

Or just go to your translator website of choice (which today means google translate most of the time sadly) and drop the URL in there.

First time I hear the 5TDF series to be based off the Jumo 205. Both are opposed piston diesel engines, as are the deltic and L60 for example.

The unrealiability seems to mostly stem from the inability of the soviet army to supply the correct lubricants and crews filled in any motor oil they had on hand. The V-2 derived engines seem to survive such maltreatment better. And dissing Ukraine of course.
