As for me, it was another tank or even AT gun (no modern tank could survive powerfull gun hit from rear)). May be even friendly fire or destroying abandoned tank by another tank. If they even survived... russian tanks are known for very problematic hatches and cramped interiors..

I know English is not your first language (so small mistakes are perfectly understandable) but it's occupiers. Not occupants. Occupiers is the word you're looking for. You could also go for invaders. Occupants just means people who are or have been ina given space - e.g. the previous occupants of the house.
