jaro Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 (edited) is this a new one? i'm kinda dubious, Zhytomyr is quite far away from Russian operation zone, pushing that far west just asks for destruction once they are out of fuel... edit: Ah, its Zhytomyr region.. it was near town of Hranitne Edited February 27, 2022 by jaro

I was doing a WWII event at a US base and had dismounted from the Dingo to recce forwards through what looked like a field filled with very tall reeds, it had good hard ground. I broke through the reeds and found a large ditch caused by erosion that would have swallowed the dingo up had I driven through the field at speed. Heck If I'd been running I'd probably have ended up down in the ditch on my ass. Probably would have injured me and my observer badly. And that's an open topped vehicle with decent visibility if you stick your head up. There's a video of a few guys driving around Normandy in an M3A1 who just miss a 5-year-old French girl waving to them from trailside by inches. Even more sobering is that they probably didn't even see her until they were editing the dashcam footage. Edited February 27, 2022 by Nobu

Nah, I don't think that was the calculation at all. IMO Putin predicted that the west would back down once again, as it had proven remarkably spineless up to that point. But now that the west is suddenly starting to rediscover its balls a few days into the invasion, it's obviously too late to pull back as it would be an open admission that he screwed up royally, so now there's no option left to him but to charge forward.

Roman Alymov Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 Meanwhile Turkey is closing the straights for Russian and Ukrainian warships (de-facto only for Russian, as Ukraine do not have warships anymore) - just like Igor Strelkov predicted, and probably not only him (see MoD Shoigu visit to Syria with inspection jyst days before conflict intensified).

Generally agree, as history has shown that the Red Army usually gets its second wind. (Edited to add) Also agree that 90% of the footage/pictures/tweets we are seeing from both sides is probably bullshit. Every day of organized Ukrainian military resistance is just icing, however. Unfortunately (and ironically) for the Federation, the cake itself is an economic and political poison one. Let them choke on it. Edited February 27, 2022 by Nobu

With armor columns moving hundreds of kilometers often off roads in heavy mud bypassing resistance pockets, rate of losses to technical reason is surprisingly low, especially taking into consideration each case is immediatelly circulated globally by any means possible (as Western media, including digital one, are clearly not just on Ukraininian side but waging information war for them).

Visibility from and AFV is bloody awfull, and that's before you add in dirt on optics and exhaust smoke coupled to a guy who has sod all sleep, I honestly sympathise for all these mishaps! That is the commanders job. If he doesn't have his heat out on road marches, isn't that suggestive of a certain lack of confidence? I'm reminded of 3rd Armoured division whose commanders hatches were rusted open, because Patton said he would court marshal anyone with it closed.

Roman, I can think of a handful of armoured vehicles that were abandoned in Iraq in 2003, and the Americans had the discipline to usually demolished them first. Gavin-Phillips Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 As if the MT-LB didn't have enough variants; here's another one. I'm thinking this is probably a field-modification rather than something factory-built but its at 0:41 on the following news clip. MT-LB's with the Shturm-S have already been seen on a few video clips but are these Konkurs missiles mounted above the PKT-armed turret?
DavidDCM Posted February 27, 2022 Posted February 27, 2022 (edited) Maybe already irrelevant. But here's a hi-res picture of the tank from day 1 of the fighting in Kharkiv. Confirming it is indeed T-80BVM. I remember there was some disagreement about its identity. --> Getty Images Edited February 27, 2022 by DavidDCM
