Which also explains why there were no distress calls.

Don't know about this plane, but if it had an ELT installed, probably it was in the upper-rear fuselage, too.

Open letter to Dutch PM

Dear prime minister,

As you go to sleep today, more and more people will hate you. It’s the price of power, they say.

Well, not me, sir. Oh no. I will keep loving you.

Some of our fellow countrymen expect more than firm language. The majority perhaps. You and I “get” that.

They want their 193 fellow countrymen back on Dutch soil. Before those corpses rot further in the Ukrainian sun. Before their wallets and iPhones make it all the way to Putins treasure cove.

But they are maybe a bit stupid. Ha ha.

You and I both know, those corpses are rotting already. You can’t stop that.

You and I both know, a lot of the corpses are being destroyed as we speak, and even more of them will vanish into the fog of war. You can’t stop that.

...

Arms export licences for Russia still in place despite claims of embargo

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jul/23/arms-export-licences-russia-pm-embargo-report

Existing arms export licences for Russia cover equipment for launching and controlling missiles, components for military helicopters and surface-launched rockets, small arms ammunition, sniper rifles, body armour, and military communications equipment, the committee says. They also include licences for night sites for weapons, components for operating military aircraft in confined spaces, and surface-to-surface missiles.

Apart from this being quite a serious bit of news for the Cameron government, it also made me chuckle at journalists reporting on military equipment. "Night sites for weapons"! And how the hell do you operate a military aircraft in a confined space? I imagined a squadron of Su-35s in my livingroom!

Strelkov reported in overnight battle pro-Ukrainians managed to reestablish bottleneck to south pocket, re-taking Червоная Заря и Кожевнya (Kozhevnya). This is two villages on the banks of Mius river, right next to Russian border. http://maps.yandex.ru/?um=AtXvrmMh8uhdJ50XWKiZNcq488bLmvf9&ll=38.923468%2C47.884029&spn=0.135612%2C0.049306&z=14&l=sat%2Cskl%2Csat Pro-Russian losses – 2 tanks, 2 BMPs, 30 injured (seems like fresh pro-Ukrainian brigade steamrolled over them)

Meanwhile pro-Russians reconnaissance battalion took Dibrovka (or Dubrovka – seems like both name valid) nearby, but fighting there continues – pro-Ukrainians use old WWII German concrete pillboxes and other fortifications

I thought I have read something about that river before, and yes, there are plenty of WWII fortifications there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mius-Front

Yes, you are right. By the way in reference books “Saur-Grave” is Saur-Mogila (mogila is grave in Russian) – now this strategic hill is key pro-Russian position in the area.

Ah, thought that might have been a barracks. Well there was something that looked like a batterered concrete tower on the edge of the cornfield, and actually in the cornfield there was what looked like a pillar, typical of what used to be mounted Soviet AFVs as memorials, or maybe aircraft. I just wondered if if this one of the outlying defences of the Kharkov battle.

Concrete barracks? Not in SU at least. I think this is all remains of huge Soviet investments in agriculture in 1960th-80th (nearly in vain, I must say, due to system failures).

Oh ok then, I hadnt considered it may just be the remnants of collectivisation. The monument plinth I still find curious though.

At the times of collectivization concrete was precious material in USSR, with everything made of wood etc. in villages…. Proper construction materials only became available in 1960th.

There are heads expected to roll in Russian MoD after poor translators performance on press-conference - two translator girls where invited only 45 minutes before the event start and got no knowledge of terminology…. Now military officials blaming each other for failing to organaise translation properly (according to rumors of course)

Looks like the fight is getting into city center - is there perhaps also a "frontline" map to accompany this? If I recall the bigger maps, UA troops are advancing generally from North and West?

No, as far as i understand fighting is still on the city borders.

Map from pro-russian side

Older maps available here http://kot-ivanov.livejournal.com/

Ah, I see. So from North only.

From South is the Lugansk airport where some pro-Ukrainian troops are blocked and pro-Ukrainians continuously try to unblock them with heavy use of tanks bypassing Lugansk from East.

But it is not attacks on the city itself. Situation is unclear.

It is still exporting £132m of weapons to Russia despite the shooting down of flight MH17 and previously promising to cancel all arms-related contracts to Moscow.

What kind of weapons? It is the first time I hear about any arms imports from Britain. Is it real deals or just projects? Or it is actually not to Russia but to “another country which might then in time sell weapons to Russia” (half of the globe fits this definition, if not more)
