BansheeOne Posted June 21, 2014 Author Posted June 21, 2014 There will probably some extra kilometers looking for parking, going for dinner in the evening etc. But I daresay going slightly over the included mileage is not going to break the bank; Europcar which we're looking at charges 39 cent per km over the limit.
Markus Becker Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 In that case let's take the Autobahn to Koblenz. It is the only route where the shorter alternative takes significantly longer. In the other cases the 'faster' routes are mere minutes faster but sometimes a lot longer. Especially the one to Irrel. The google maps 'default' route over the Autobahn adds ~50km.
BansheeOne Posted June 30, 2014 Author Posted June 30, 2014 Two-week warning. Unfortunately after some cancellations due to force majeure, attendance is now down to nine which is relevant for some activities where I advertized twelve; but all appointments are made, and I expect no problems. One question is whether to rent an additional normal car rather than a van now, which would save about 300 Euro but, knowing the physical size of several guys, might be a tight pack on the long road trips we'll be making. Anyway, if there are any late decisions by TankNetters to join the event, now would be an excellent time to announce them.
BansheeOne Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 There were several cases of unexpected house repairs, though one party managed to get back on board after cost turned out to be not as high as anticipated. The current list is:Â - Allan Wotherspoon- BansheeOne- BansheeFour- Dave Clark- Harold Jones- Leo Niehorster- Marek Tucan- Markus Becker- Sunday
Leo Niehorster Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I shall be arriving at Frankfurt Flughafen via S-Bahn on 14 July 2014 at about 13:30. Then onto the hotel. CheersLeo
Marek Tucan Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Final update on my side, due to unexpected family emergency last week I will not be able to participate the entire week, but I shall be able to definitely join for Thurdsay and Friday, depending on transport then also maybe on saturday (at least partially).   Managed to get at least 2 days

BansheeOne Posted July 10, 2014 Author Posted July 10, 2014 There is a late change in the itinerary as I was just asked whether we could put the winetasting on Thursday since our hosts had to fetch their kid from the kindergarten farewell celebration at 2100 on Friday; I gladly agreed because coming back from Ft. Hackenberg, we could be at the winery at 1800, also leave an hour earlier and thus be back at the hotel at 2200 rather than 2300.  Monday, 14 July - Arrival DayCheck in to NH Frankfurt Airport Tuesday, 15 July - Koblenz Day0900 leave hotel1000-1300 Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung Koblenz1300-1600 lunch in downtown Koblenz, possible visit of Deutsches Eck Rhine/Mosel confluence, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress or Deutsche Bahn Museum1600-1715 Rhine cruise (alternate 1630-1730)1830 return to hotel Wednesday, 16 July - Verdun Day0900 leave hotel1100-1230 Westwall Museum Gerstfeldhöhe Niedersimtenca. 1300 lunch on the run, probably some fast food at autobahn rest area1500-1900 Verdun with battlefield, museum, cemetry/ossuary and Fort Douaument2200 return to hotel Thursday, 17 July - Saar Day0900 leave hotel1030-1300 Diehl Land Defence Systems Freisen, including lunch1430-1630 Fort Hackenberg1800-2100 Spielmann-Schindler Winery Bobenheim am Berg2200 return to hotel Friday, 18 July - Speyer-Sinsheim Day0900 leave hotel1000-1300 Auto- und Technikmuseum Sinsheim1330-1500 lunch in downtown Speyer, possible visit of cathedral with tomb of medieval German kings and emperors1500-1800 Technikmuseum Speyer1900 return to hotel Saturday, 19 July - Luxembourg Day0900 leave hotel1130-1300 Westwall Museum Irrel1400-1500 lunch in Diekirch1500-1800 Luxembourg National Military History Museum Diekirch2100 return to hotel Sunday, 20 July - Departure DayFor late leavers, the Zeppelin Museum Zeppelinheim near the airport might be worth a visit.  The Berlin Cell including BansheeFour will arrive at the hotel on Monday ca. 1800, having picked up the rental car at the Europcar station in Frankfurt-Niederrad (which is apparently considerably cheaper than the 24-hour station at FFM next door) on the way. With Marek only on board two-and-a-half days, we're now going for a five-seat car rather than a van. The only sticking point is that Marek asked if we could deliver him to the railway station in Luxembourg City after Irrel on Saturday, so he can catch the train to Paris. This would mean one of the cars arrives 45 minutes late in Diekirch; but then we have planned four hours including lunch there, and I think it could be managed. Some weather advice: Predictions for the next week in our area are mixed with sun, clouds and some initial rain, thunderstorms possible towards the end, daily highs of 32 and nightly lows of 12 centigrade. Please mind that we will be visiting underground installations which are quite cold all year; last time I went to Ft. Hackenberg, I developed a full-blown head cold.

sunday Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Praise God for dark, damp, and cold subterranean places!
Dave Clark Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 Incidentally our timing has been excellent yet again. In Berlin we avoided the Pope; this time we manage to avoid the Tour de France, which is passing through the World War One battlefields this week, actually passing through Verdun tomorrow.
sunday Posted July 10, 2014 Posted July 10, 2014 We will not be able to avoid the celebrations, or the sorrow, after the WC final, though.
Markus Becker Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 The hotel wants 22€/day for breakfast, so me, Leo and maybe some others need a place to grab some coffee in the morning. I have checked google maps and that are the locations 'foraging parties' need to head to. The distances are short. Just two kilometers to the airport or to the city center of Kelsterbach.    Â

Leo Niehorster Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Frankfurt airport is the most expensive place in Germany to eat, so don't expect a 99¢ breakfast there. Since I usually only have a hot brew for breakfast, I will probably bring my own stuff and settle for a cup of tea using the hot water kettle in the room. That will do me just fine. (Oh! for the Ashford International Hotel.) Of course, if a POV driven by a non-breakfastee is available, there might be other possibilities in the neighborhood.
sunday Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 (edited) The Ashford International, the Best Western in Prague, that little B&B Marek and me used in Bournemouth... And the best of all, Chez Maxx!  Breakfast is going to be an issue. Had a look to tripadvisor, and there is no place close to the hotel to have breakfast. However, the hotel has another restaurant -not the BF one- that opens at 0600. Could be worth to have a look there. If we are travelling by Autobahn, another option could be to go to the first rest area and have breakfast there. There are also trucker stops, Autohof, that seem to be quite cheap. More info here: http://www.gettingaroundgermany.info/autobahn.shtml#service http://tank.rast.de/en/ Edited July 13, 2014 by sunday
Markus Becker Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 The REWE at the airport has normal prices but one of the bakeries seems closer and they open very early. Plus, we an scout the area for something Google has overlooked.
Allan W Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Harold and I are checked into the hotel. We are heading into Frankfurt city for a few hours. Will aim to be back at hotel around 6
Markus Becker Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I arrived around 4pm. The closest supermarket is not close enough or I wear the wrong shoes. CU in the lobby around six.
BansheeOne Posted July 14, 2014 Author Posted July 14, 2014 Berlin Cell (+) had several traffic jams and will now pick up the rental car tomorrow morning; currently about 20 minutes from hotel.
