I have to wonder how much these drills account for the actual combat conditions in Ukraine. Are they presuming that NATO airpower will keep OPFOR surveillance and artillery in check?
Mighty_Zuk Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 What do you think about this? They say 4-men crew. But also an autoloader, so I assume the 4th crewman is some systems' operator (they call him deputy commander). He gets the RCWS, which I assume also entails special C-UAS training. Operation of the LMs is something indeed a gunner shouldn't do, considering their task to loiter and not just strike. But this could also be easily relegated to someone else, perhaps a dedicated weapons operator in a nearby APC/IFV. Sensors? This is not really a serious cognitive burden. Gunner and commander already do that, and new sensors are added with the understanding that additional workload is handled by automated systems and narrowed down for the crew, including input from conventional sensors. An interesting sensor type would be some ELINT system that could try identify clusters of enemies based on emissions. But is that needed on every individual vehicle? I'm not sure. It could be on a single vehicle per platoon. If the effectors are electronic, then that's where I see where perhaps a new crewman is needed. In the context of the French army a 4-man crew is unacceptable (for an upgrade to Leclerc), but this could be a marketing pitch for armed forces accustomed to 4 crewmen.
Stuart Galbraith Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Sounds to me as awkward as a Char Bis. Why dont they just slap a challenger 3 turret on it and be done with it?
Stuart Galbraith Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 If anyone is offended, I apologise, but this has to be posted somewhere..

Mike1158 Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Last I heard, the French were moving back to a crew of four in the interests of overall efficiency of the crew. It certainly makes all the general tasks of running a vehicle easier and reduces fatigue levels.

Walter_Sobchak Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 Not exactly a tank, but an example of creative recycling of AFV components.
Stuart Galbraith Posted July 8, 2024 Posted July 8, 2024 You just have to wonder what happened to the rest of it....

bojan Posted July 27, 2024 Posted July 27, 2024 Maybe, maybe not but idea in this case is to convert Cyprus towed triple 20mm AA guns to this.

The Hispano HS.404/804 is a notably compact weapon, and the ammunition supply system in that mount seems to be one drum per gun, i.e. all you see is all that is.

Stuart Galbraith Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 Looks to be a very similar pattern to Bovingtons one. https://tankmuseum.org/article/iconic-rolls-royce-armoured-car-turns-100-years-old/
