A U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant and self-described white nationalist planned a domestic terrorist attack targeting politicians and journalists, federal prosecutors say in court papers.

Christopher Paul Hasson was arrested last week on gun and drug charges, but intended "to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country," according to court documents filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Maryland.

Hasson was scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon in Maryland.

Hasson has been stockpiling weapons since 2017, the government said, and created a list of targets including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Allegedly expressing extremist views for years, Hasson viewed pro-Russian, neo-fascist, and neo-Nazi literature thousands of times between January 2017 and 2019. He once wrote, "I am dreaming of a way to kill almost every last person on the earth" in an email draft, court documents said.

Or so the FBI says. I'm willing to wait for the trial to find out how much of what he's alleged to have written is just internet blather and how much a real threat.

FAKE NEWS!!!!! This is obviously a false-flag operation by deep-cover Antifa to discredit perfectly legitimate heavily-armed right-wing nutters.

Nope, just letting due process work itself out.

FAKE NEWS!!!!! This is obviously a false-flag operation by deep-cover Antifa to discredit perfectly legitimate heavily-armed right-wing nutters.

I have never had a great deal of confidence in the honesty, impartiality, and competance of US Federal law enforcement even before any of this Deep State stuff became a thing. That being said, the alleged crimes and alleged planned crimes may be true. Until we hear both sides of the story, preferably before a jury, I am not going to sharpen my pitchfork or prepare any torches.

As for "heavily-armed", court papers claim he has something like one or two semi auto rifles, a couple of hunting rifles in different calibers, and a few handguns. A thousand rounds of ammo is a couple boxes for each of these different calibers. That is perfectly normal for an American gun owner. Many on this grate sight have more guns and ammo than that.

And apart from that it is not surprising that the hate spewed by the left towards normal Americans will create such reactions, but it is still surprising that obviously you become an FBI target for reading right weing texts, while the radical antifa can freely post videos on youtube asking for the destruction of white America.

The media doesn't grok that such is a fairly average collection for gunnies. A couple of cans and seemingly light on ammo in all honesty.

We each shot about 1000 rounds in 3 days up at PFT.

Assuming the reporting is accurate, he was musing on the best ways to kill as many people as possible and talking about using diseases, he was making up kill lists and doing at least preliminary steps in finding out where those targets live and congregate.

With that, unless he was researching a spy thriller, he seems like a nutjob of the kind best put away from polite society for the time being. So, attaboys seem due to the law enforcement people on this.

Can we get those guys promoted? There's room for more competence higher up.

Is this a gamble? Not how he was playing the election game:

North Carolina Board Orders New Election in Tainted House Race

The North Carolina elections board ordered a new vote in a U.S House district because of evidence that the results in November were tainted by fraud.

The ruling came on the fourth day of the board’s hearing to investigate allegations of absentee voter fraud orchestrated by a political operative on GOP candidate Mark Harris’s payroll during last year’s midterm election. Harris held a 905-vote lead over Democrat Dan McCready in the unofficial tally that a previous election board declined to certify.

Harris on Thursday abruptly reversed his earlier request that the November result be certified, instead urging a new election. At the end of his testimony, Harris said medical issues he experienced last month affected his recollection of events.

“It’s become clear to me that the public’s confidence in the 9th district seat general election has been undermined to an extent that a new election is warranted,” Harris told the board. "Through the testimony I’ve listened to over the past three days, I believe a new election should be called.”

Where I live, that's what is known as "a good start."

What I'm reading online so far, he definitely needs to be in custody.

Given that your typical Antifa seems to be an effete, entitled 18-22 weakling or strident harpy whose total experience of firearms comes from Call of Duty, how many do you think have amassed arsenals like that?

The only 'fake news' statement was Chris' joke. Given the drugs the guy was apparently messing with, keeping him in the can is understandable.

The problem with white guy psychos is that they tend to be fairly competent in killing large numbers of people. Lets keep him locked up for quite a while.

Ill bet the Coast Guard career wasnt going so well.

The drugs is what I wonder about. Was he expecting those steroids to make him some sort of super soldier??

From Jim Geraghtys Morning Jolt column:

The news that a U.S. Coast Guard lieutenant was arrested for plotting terror attacks was midlevel news in a busy news week. But if he had successfully executed any one of the many plots he envisioned, we would awaken the next day in a much more frightened, much more divided, much more suspicious country. Externally, he was the kind of man that is ubiquitous in the greater Washington area: To outward appearances, the 49-year-old lieutenant was a suburban father with a desk job supplying Coast Guard ships, who was glimpsed by neighbors coming and going in uniform or walking his dogs with his wife.

A 49 y/o lieutenant? LTCDR perhaps?? Still, it sounds like he was passed over and marking time until separation.

Its also bothersome that other possible radicals seek access to the military and its training; one of the things recruiters screen for.

From Jim Geraghtys Morning Jolt column:

There are currently 1.4 million active members of the US military and eight hundred thousand reserves. This is one guy. There are probably a few more and other political undesirables like antifa, but I'd be much more worried about criminal gangs infiltrating the military to sell drugs.

For once I agree with Paul, the dude needs to stay in jail, and get a mental eval.

I agree. Unless the stuff about his mental state and drug use is entirely fictional, and it most likely is not, then he needs to be in jail or a secure hospital. I bet that if it turns out he's just an imaginative druggie and not a spree killer wannabe, we won't hear anything more of this story.

So four semi auto rifles in at least two different calibers, five hunting rifles and shotguns in two or three different calibers, and six pistols in at least two different calibers. So perhaps two hundred rounds of each caliber? He seems to have a few extra mags, but I would expect he'd want a lot more were he serious about mass murder.

I believe that some of LA's 'hard, pipe hittin' gangstas' liked to encourage some of their members to join the military to learn how to actually handle weapons and not 'turn their pistols sideways'.

The USCG does have an OCS program that does result in some older junior officers than you might expect but a 49 yr old LT is probably pushing it even for them.
