Marek Tucan
BCs were fleet screen and were not supposed to babysit aviation cruisers. OTOH aviation cruisers were supposed to support screen so to be quite close... In theory the 5x20cm broadside would be a nasty thing to any Omaha that would come by. Though TBH wondering why they did not want the turrets aft - would be more logical place on a carrier. What is weirder was that in the 1930s refit, they moved the 4 guns from turrets to casemates instead of removing all casemated guns. I mean the weight down there might have helped but so could have additional fuel tanks or whatever.
Markus Becker
"In theory the 5x20cm broadside would be a nasty thing to any Omaha that would come by." Thats not saying a lot. Pretty much anything could do nasty things to Omahas. Marblehead was almost lost to three 100 kilo bombs.
Skywalkre
Do we really need more carriers when the class as a whole is still effectively broken? I'd think the best thing to do, assuming there's some massive rework going on in the background, is stop putting any resources into them until they're fixed or dropped from the game. RETAC21
It's going to be more broken, manual drops are going away on the lower tiers, meaning number of hits are going down but transition to the mid tier is going to be particularly painful. I've digged around a bit whether it's worth to go from Lex to Essex and the feedback is negative. Just like in real life

As for adding a new premium carrier, it's a new shiny to distract the carrier players while WG tries do find a way make them fun.
DB
It's interesting watching them generally dance around the power creep versus already sold Premiums. Onthe other side, of course, several f the premiums are just a little bit overpowered (!) and they will not nerf them because people would demand refunds.
Harold Jones
They do occasionally nerf a premium but they far more commonly buff them. For example, the Arkansas Beta and the Marblehead are getting range buffs in the next patch. If a premium turns out to be really over powered they will stop selling it. What I don't see much of in WoWS is releasing seriously broken premiums that a few months later get a smack from the nerf bat.

Skywalkre
Speaking of premiums it was a little disconcerting to be reading on places like wotlabs how folks were playing mostly premium ships in ranked play this season. They apparently weren't blatantly OP but still clearly better than the regular ships for folks pushing to the top ranks.

Harold Jones
I used the Indianapolis in the 3 or 4 ranked games I played this season for that reason. The indy is weaker than the Pensicola but being able to use a more or less fully built at captain is nice.
DB
I'm a battleship player by competence, and took notice of the advice from players like Flamu and Aeroon on ship types so took my Gneisenau into most ranked battles. I didn't play much ranked and ended up 15th which was enough to get me a couple of the modifications, which ironically only really work in Cruisers and DDs. The ships of choice were Belfast and Scharnhorst apparently, with the Scharnhorst getting a minor nod over the Gneisenau for rate of fire I guess. Non-premium includes Fiji if you know how to play it (I don't as my lousy 43% win rate attests). It's far too easy to delete most tier 7 cruisers if they make a mistake, whereas German BBs can get away with the occasional flash of broadside. Marek Tucan
On higher ranks the proportion of Gniesenaus increased. In secondary build she is a killer and the 38cm guns have easier time getting through battleship armor. OTOH Nagato was able to score citadels on uncomfortably regular basis. Trollorado is just too slow. From DDs the #1 was obviously the magic carpet of Shiratsuyu, though Mahan, Sims and Maas were also good. Akatsuki and Kiev / Minsk... Not so much. Esp. the Soviet cities, with their abysmal torpedo range.

TonyE
Bah, will bring out my sweet Dunq and send that Hood to the bottom. One Gnevny by gunfire, a Fuso and then a König, both getting a full torpedo broadside each, all in 60 seconds and done alone. Okhotnik can do and Okhotnik will do. Skywalkre
Trollorado is just too slow. The entire US BB line through tier 7 seems to be as inept as when the game went live. (I remember when I came back a few months ago even the high tier USN BBs were apparently so bad many players had abandoned them and they were getting some buffs.) The Germans fill the up close, secondary build role while the Japanese do better at long range. Where's this leave the US BBs? When deciding what to play next I often base it off of what I see when fighting against something. At mid tiers right now (I'm playing the Kongo and Bayern exclusively) I have no fear of any US BB I run into. I stay at long range in the Kongo or charge up close in the Bayern (and in this situation I've had several run-ins where I came in with less health and sailed away while the US BB went to the bottom). Why should a player put up with the rather long grind of the US BB line right now? Edited March 26, 2017 by Skywalkre
Skywalkre
So reading the 6.3 changes stealth firing from open water is now gone... but to be honest I never saw much of that at the tiers I was at (the consensus over on wotlabs was that it wasn't that big of a deal and mostly used by bad players to farm damage over wins). Still nothing to really do against ships sitting in smoke and laying into you, though? I've come across some acronyms on WoWs that I'm not sure about. Are there more modules available to ships (than there were at launch) at higher tiers than I'm at that can counter firing from within smoke? sunday
Like radar and hydro, you mean?
Skywalkre
I vaguely remember Hydro but way back the range was so short it was largely worthless (and had to be equipped on a cruiser which is soft up close). Radar I don't recall. Did the boost ranges on hydro or do an overhaul of them in recent months? Edit: Just found this useful post over on wotlabs: Six ways to counter smoke:1. Shoot torpedoes into it2. Close using cover and use radar or hydro (Hindenburg and DM are kings of this).3. Use the spotter plane to blind shoot the smoke. Even a single hit will usually result in the DD stopping firing to reposition. 4. Rush the smoke. He has to leave or be spotted once the smoke ends and gunned down.5. Go elsewhere and let him sit in smoke with no targets.6. Kill his spotter. If none of these are possible then either a) you've been outplayed or you fucked up. There are many ways to counter smoke play, we do it all the times in comp and pub.1 and 2 aren't available to me in my current BBs but from reading this thread it sounds like smoke firing isn't that awful after all. DB
Low tier hydro doesn't offer a big range advantage over proximity spotting, but German hydro in particular has longer range and the advantage of duration over radar. IF you're going to radar smoke, try to do it when there is supporting fire, or even better, use it deliberately when someone else can use it instead of you to increase the dpm on target. If the smoked-up ship doesn't have a supporting observer, then you can maybe wait him out - but check the smoke duration for different nations to see if it's worth it. Notser has a nice Missouri video showing how he deals with a Fletcher stealth firing in one circumstance which might be worth a look. (Essentially the DD has to put itself far out of position to maintain the stealth and so become irrelevant until sniped by a friendly DD that gets inside its detection range before firing.) Using a spotting plane to counter fire against the "tracer" works because it improves the range estimate hugely, but you have to guesstimate the ship's movement inside the smoke.
