Tried absinthe for the first time tonight. I found it to be enjoyable. It was quite sweet with a heavy licorice flavor to it. The level of sweetness surprised me as traditionally you melt a sugar cube into the absinthe. Though this was just a small cheap ten dollar bottle of absinthe, so I dont know how it compares to the good stuff. As far as licorice flavored liquors goes, I would also like to try salmiakki liquor.

I also prefer ommiting sugar cube, but with some absinths it is almost mandatory.

Czech and Spanish are only ones making "old" absinthe, with very, very high alcohol %.

...and the herbs ;)

Which makes it IIRC forbidden in US.

Got pretty fucked up on the stuff in Russia back in '09. Good times.

Not only in US :)

Friend that now lives in Czech has a duty to bring two bottles of "good stuff: twice a year. :)

"Real" Absinthe is legal in the US, though thujone is banned. Many traditional absinthe recipes do not contain appreciable quantities of thujone, and are thus legal.

Kubler, an absinthe made from grande wormwood, is my favored brand.

I read somewhere that the good ole´ Absinth actually didn't contain as much thujone as previously thought. They had done some testing on a bottle found in a dig and it seems that the modern day snaps "Bäska Droppar" actually contains more thujone than absinth did :D

Guess it was mostly the high alcohol and other stuff consumed that made people crazy..
