Fritz Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 (edited) TEMPORARY DOWN FOR REWORK BE BACK SOON Edited February 7, 2015 by Fritz
Marek Tucan Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 What application are you using? Looks very neat, would be fun to have such low-level TOE in graphical form. Planning to cover entire war, or different nations?
Fritz Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 3ds max I have no "plans" since I do it just for fun and what is "fun" at the moment can change quite abruptly but I'd like to do more. I've started with 1941 since June 22 is the main focus of the WWII section of my own forums. I'm feeling that I'd like to do a late war company for comparison, and it's really likely that I'll do something about the Bulgarian tank force. And like I mentioned, Soviet 1941 tank forces but that depends on availability of data. But first, I am thinking more and more about putting together a full Panzer regiment... would look epic.
Marek Tucan Posted April 8, 2013 Posted April 8, 2013 Not sure how well it would work though - the Panzers would be tiny or the file huge But for company-level it is definitely more instructive than charts and stuff.
Fritz Posted April 8, 2013 Author Posted April 8, 2013 Yeah I have terrible memory for numbers and explanations but I have good visual memory so this works much better for me.
ShotMagnet Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Totally cool. Hope you find a way to make it work better for you.   Shot
Fritz Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) Here be p0rn. I've been after a very specific look for a while (something of a mix of die-cast metal toy and a vintage technical illustration) and finally pretty much nailed it. Absolutely love it. Took a lot of mixing and fine-tuning maps and shaders since I wanted it all procedural with nothing hand-painted (so that I just need to make the model and the rest is automatic). This is a bit more detailed than I need, since the actual TOE pics will show the tanks smaller but I just could not resist.   ... Actually here's my full current motor pool. May rerender the company later tonight. From right to left, BMW R12, + sidecar, Kfz 2, Kfz 15, Opel Blitz, SdKfz 10, Pz II, Pz III, Pz IV.The Pz II needs a little more love. I really rushed it.   Mebbe I need the thread title changed to My Little Panzers. Edited April 10, 2013 by Fritz
Fritz Posted April 10, 2013 Author Posted April 10, 2013 (edited) Updated the company image in the original post. Now 3000px wide. Now I realized it's missing 3 trucks with reserve tank crews... Edited April 10, 2013 by Fritz
Fritz Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) NSFW!!!! Shameless attempt at getting more views by adding more sexyness. Obviously now that I have that babe, a schwere Pz Kompanie (and why not whole Abteilung) will follow soon. And here a separate pic because it's THAT hot. Edited April 12, 2013 by Fritz
Harold Jones Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 So when do you get a 3d printer and start making them? Of course never having used one I have no idea how hard it would be to go from a 'drawing' to an actual printed object but I bet it would be fun to try.
Fritz Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) So when do you get a 3d printer and start making them? Of course never having used one I have no idea how hard it would be to go from a 'drawing' to an actual printed object but I bet it would be fun to try. The cool thing about 3D printers is that basically once you have your 3D object, you just press print and it comes out. There's a specific file format they take and the major 3D programs I've been working with support it. The not so cool thing is that "press button - print comes out" printers are very expensive, and the cheap ones for home use (still $500-1000) require a lot of tinkering and fine-tuning to get satisfactory products, from what I've read. We actually do want one at work, just waiting for a reliable affordable model to come out. ... Btw that reminded me of an older humorous sci-fi story by ... Stanislav Lem?... a company started selling these machines, which could build anything, for home users, one family on a remote planet bought one, their kid secretly used it to build himself a small army and then conquered the planet and made himself an emperor.  ... I'm looking at the heavy Pz company 1942 model and it's cool, equal mix of Pz III and Tigers, that would be fun to see. Will try to get it together asap. Edited April 12, 2013 by Fritz
Mike Steele Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 The gun on the tiger looks a teeney bit short (nitpick)
Fritz Posted April 12, 2013 Author Posted April 12, 2013 Â Â Could look misleading since I think I made it a touch wider. I don't follow the blueprints 100%, I might decide to exaggerate some details so they can be seen better when the tanks are shown small from afar. The guideline here is do you easily recognize what it is, do you easily recognize the major details that identify the particular model and does it look hot. The smaller tank guns and especially the MGs are bigger diameter than the blueprints for this purpose.
Fritz Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 Original post updated with medium company 1941 and heavy company 1942. Since the heavy battalion is just 2 companies + 2 support companies, it's not impossible to fit it all on one image. I will think about it.
Leo Niehorster Posted April 13, 2013 Posted April 13, 2013 Lovely diagrams. The initial Heavy Tank Battalion organization authorized two (later three) identical tank companies ( see 15 December 1942 T/O ), with a mixture of Pz-VI and Pz-III in each company;the subsequent Heavy Tank Battalion organization also authorized three identical tank companies ( see 5 March 1943 T/O ), but the companies only had Pz-VI.There were no support companies, although both types of battalion each had a headquarters company and maintenance company. CheersLeo
Fritz Posted April 13, 2013 Author Posted April 13, 2013 (edited) I could not find a full schwere battalion diagram on your site. I've seen on other sites that yes there is a third company authorized but in reality was never fielded? Also, apologies, when I said "support" I just meant "other". I saw some references on what's in these two companies but no full TOE and without it I can't do the full battalion images. If you could help there I'd appreciate it.......aaand I just noticed Sledgehammers in my library... DOHguess that's what I'm reading tonight Edited April 13, 2013 by Fritz

It makes some interesting points on the strengths and weaknesses of the mixed and pure Tiger platoons and of course on the lack of proper recovery vehicle for it but most of it is about combat.
Leo Niehorster Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 KStN 1150d — Headquarters Company, Heavy Tank Battalion — 15.08.1942 Co Hqs: 2 mcl; 1 car (Kfz.15). Baggage Trains: 1 truck (4.5-ton).[1] In lieu of the nine 1-ton halftracks plus six ammo trailers, nine trucks (Kfz. 81) were also authorized. I have checked my files. There were several other organizations published for the heavy tank battalion headquarters company within this time period, namely: 1150 b — 25.04.1942 1150 b — 25.01.1943 1150 d — 01.04.1943Unfortunately, it seems that none of these three have survived the end of the war. The next T/O authorized was KStN 1150 e, dated 01.11.1943. The organization dated 01.06.1944 amalgamated the headquarters company and the battalion headquarters into KStN 1107 b (f.G.), now known as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Heavy Tank Battalion "Tiger". This re-organization also introduced the service company, which removed the service elements of the three Tiger companies and concentrated them into one separate unit. The last one was KStN 1107 (f.G.) dated 01.11.1944, which was the HHC for all tank battalions (Pz-IV, Pz-V, Pz-VI, Stu-Pz, Pz-Stu.Gesch.) CheersLeo
Fritz Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 (edited) OK this is for my own use. Models that I need to make for HQ company: BefehlstigerPz III PanzerbefehlswagenSchwimmwagen Kfz. 31 ambulanceSd.Kfz. 10/4 + Sd.Ah. 51 Not too bad, the command tanks just need the antennas added, the Schwimmagen is just modified Kübelwagen, so I'm left with just 2 major models to make. Should be able to finish this one today. The motor maintenance company has a number of new vehicles but we'll see. I assume these are similar to what goes in the normal panzer battalion so I guess once I have them I can do everything.2 vans (4.5-ton) - no Kfz number?... are these Kfz. 42 like below?halftrack crane (Sd.Kfz. 9/1 – 6-ton)bus (medium/22 seats)trailer (generator Type A for 15k AC)trailer (arc welding)trailer (two axle – 3-ton)Sd.Kfz. 9truck (2-ton) - new to me, I guess this would be a leichte Lkwsignal maintenance van (Kfz. 42)battery van (Kfz. 42)trailer (generator for recharging batteries - Sd.Ah. 23).AA car (Kfz. 4 w/ dual MG) - the hell is this? Sounds like fun, found it Edited April 14, 2013 by Fritz
Fritz Posted April 14, 2013 Author Posted April 14, 2013 Found all the KSTNs... http://www.sturmpanzer.com/Default.aspx?tabindex=5&tabid=621&item=3&sec=1 Also, from here http://www.wwiidaybyday.com/kstn/kstn11851jun42.htm it appears the "4.5t van" in your list is a Werkstattkraftwagen (Kfz. 79). Since I will be back to work tomorrow it could take me a week to put the whole thing together.
