Damian
Some bad news, we had an accident in Leopard 2A4 few weeks ago, ammo fire inside vehicle, loader (23 years old, damn he was younger than I am) seriously burned, 70% of his body, unfortunetaly he died few days ago, commander and gunner have around 50% of their bodies burned, only driver was unharmed. They were lucky ammo was only in turret isolated compartment, if there would be more ammo in hull storage probably nobody would survive, tank itself would also be complete loss, right now it is said it didn't burned completely and is good for repairs. In other news, US Army will build 5 storage and training bases in Poland for armored vehicles, spare parts etc. Also UK is confirming more troops to be send to Poland for excercises and more permament presence. Which are all good news. Edited October 11, 2015 by Damian
Panzermann
Good to hear the bunker works as designed. Any reasons found why the fire started in the Leo 2? Was the automatic fire extinguisher turned off?

Damian
Good to hear the bunker works as designed. Any reasons found why the fire started in the Leo 2? Was the automatic fire extinguisher turned off? Rumors says serious human error from company/battalion commander that ordered to use ammo with expired usability date of propelant charges from the older production batch of our own domestic training ammo, that ammo was reported to have serious problems, including increasing wear and tear on gun barrels and breaches. Also fire extuinguishing system was turned off because it have tendency to discharge ocassionaly due to false alarms. Problems with newer batches of ammunition were mostly solved tough. However I suspect after investigation "heads will fall". PS. I hate AKMS... I hate AK's in general from a user point of view (ergonomics are just non existing), their reliability is only advantage, and still they have tendency to broke as our AK's are old ones from magazines, my was manufactured in 1985 and the one thing I hate the most in it, is it's folding stock (unbelivable how unergonomic it is) with jamming release button, also one of guys in my unit got a failure where in his AKMS gas piston just broke off from bolt carrier, and he just fired blanks during initial training with weapons. Though I was surprised, during my first live rounds firing, I received highest possible grade, all 8 rounds hit target at 100m, which is nice. Though other equipment is even worse in our reserves, a typical post WarPac junk, the MP-4 mask is more or less acceptable, but OP-1 suit was designed by a sadist, seriously, try to put it on yourself in 9 minutes, in a gas mask, without risking to rip off all these rubber belts, useless junk that do not protect against anything (maybe besides rain and wind), yet reserves receive it for training purposes because modern FOO-1 suits (which are fantastic BTW, we seen it, it's a typical modern NBC suit, ergonomic and fast to put on yourself) are too expensive to be used for training by us. Good thing is we received modern wz.2005 helmets and wz.2010 uniforms, which are really good.
Panzermann
Yes, we only had the extinguisher for the engine turned on, because of false alarms. I had to clean several engine compartments because of false alarms, because some idiot had the wires connected wrong in the compartment. Not fun. One lot we shot was remanufactured old stocks. Nothing exploded, but they were dirty as hell and left smear traces inside the tubes. Recoil seemed to be stronger as well when we looked at the recoil meter on the cartridge basket. There is a reason there is a "use until date" on the ammo. I hope this has consequences. Up to polish MoD, someone in administration must have cleared to hand out this old overdue ammunition. Someone in the chain should have shouted stop! p.s.: You should open a thread in the FFZ for your (mis)adventures in polish army.
Damian
https://www.facebook.com/416640655015190/videos/1075295085816407/ A video from "Dragon-15" excercises in Poland, we can see Polish Leopard 2A5's and Rosomak's, German Leopard 2A6's and Marder 1A5's (me thinks these are A5's), and also British Challenger 2's and Warrior's. Also more and more US equipment is moving in to Poland for another excercises, and probably these M1A2SEP's, M2A3's and other equipment will stay here for good. US Army is also now repainting all vehicles sended here to Europe from desert tan in to woodland camo pattern, tough it will take time untill they will finish. And some more videos. Simon Tan
It looks right. More so than the old one. I wonder what zone charges they used for the low angle firing. I note very little flash...very ideal for sniping DF.
Damian
It was at factory firing range, so they could not use full charges at maximum firing ranges, this will be done at military proving grounds during state trails, these were only factory trails after full integration of chassis and turret. BTW old UPG-NG chassis is currently codeveloped by Bumar and Slovakian Konstrukta. Polish chassis and Slovakian turret were mated to create a 155mm SPH Diana, it's offered for export markets. Meanwhile this is official LM and HSW model of the WR-300 Homar MLRS. Edited October 31, 2015 by Damian

TOW-2
Damian did I miss it earlier in the thread or did you not talk about that sci-fi looking "next gen" Polish MBT, the PL-01.
Damian
PL-01 is just a wooden/metal mockup on CV90 chassis, and have nothing in common with a real project codenamed "Gepard". In general, consider PL-01 as a farse made by OBRUM and Bumar company. The real project do not even have ready requirements yet.

Also I'm guessing that Gepard has nothing to do with the West German Gepard Flakpanzer, either.
Damian
Nope, "Gepard" have nothing to do with Germans SPAAG of the same codename. Truth to the told our MoD and Army do not know yet how Gepard will look in the end. Requirements are not completed, and weight of 35 tons is said to be the minimal weight of vehicle required, while desired weight and protection levels are higher. It is also not settled down yet where powerpack will be placed, there are two camps, one favors front mounted powerpack, the other one, rear mounted one. And there are more other things that needs to be settled down.

Okay; I figured as much from the direction you were leaning the first time you responded to it, but that nails it. Thanks. It was a mock up by industry. Like so many others one can admire at trade fares. Industry presents its ideas this way. Kind of like "concept cars" in civilian car industry. Or it was a devious plan cooked up by the polish counter intelligence to mislead the enemy. YF-19 anyone? Also I'm guessing that Gepard has nothing to do with the West German Gepard Flakpanzer, either.Of course. There are only a limited number of animals in the bestiary. There is for example the hungarian gepard AT rifle as well. Probably something else is named cheetah or gepard as well. urbanoid
Yeah, like Atlas Cheetah, i.e. South African upgraded Mirage III. Also Russia has Gepard-class frigates and Germoney - Gepard-class fast attack crafts.
Briganza
And some more. In general there is more and more excercises each year, which is good thing. There was a topic some time ago about rates of fire and would the Chaly's two piece ammo slow it down. At 5.55 the film focuses on one vehicle which then fires 4 shots in 35 seconds, about one every 12 seconds. I seem to remember that many thought it would have a slow rate of fire.
