I ask for pics and the man delivers video... awesome :)

"I don't know how this Polish Leopard-2A6 got parked on lawn, hon! I asked a guy on the internet for a video and..."

I was driving through Bradley IL the other day and there was a Chieftain parked in a truck drop lot just off I-57. About the last thing I would have expected. S/F....Ken M

Is Poland still pursuing the PL01 project?

I think I need to clear something here.

The vehicle called PL-01 Concept was just.... a huge lie, it is nothing more than a mockup based on CV90 chassis, and it is a initative of a company Bumar-Labedy with OBRUM design bureau, however this was never made per Army requirements for new tank. The requirements are not ready yet, so nobody really knows how new tank will look like in the end, the new tank codename is Gepard (Cheetah).

Actually anyone that knows "behind the scenes" and also MoD, Army, are all angry and there is sort of hate towards OBRUM and Bumar-Labedy for their incompetence in other programs like their fuckup with AHS Krab SPH chassis being huge failure.

I will tell more when I will be back from parade. ;)

Ohh...wow that is really an eye-opener, yes, please give more details when you can.

Ok so before I start uploading more photos, a bit more history.

So about the whole concept of a light tank, the thing is, it's only industry idea.

Their first attempt was to copy the US Future Combat Systems tracked vehicle the MGV, and thus they created WPB "Anders" technology demonstrator. The vehicle looks modern but, it was mostly from the old T-72 components that were in storage and some foreing components that were borrowed.

The MoD and Army were not interested at all. Also primary that their requirements for various vehicles are different, they don't really seek a light tank with next to no armor protection, but something closer to a proper MBT. In their requirements it seems that weight of 30-35 tons means no less than that, and it's entry point for further development, as for vehicle weight it can be as high as 50 tons fo example.

The other problem with OBRUM and Bumar actory is that they were unable to properly design and build chassis for self propelled howitzer.

The chassis for Krab is also build on T-72/PT-91 components, and this means various problems. These components were designed for vehicles with weight not exceeding 50 tons, Krab weights 55 tons, so suspension needs to handle with much greater weight. Also engine is too weak, 850HP only, transmission is old obsolete system from T-72/PT-91 as well so vehicle is not even able to pivot. Engine is also overheating, fuel system is leaking like crazy.

Also they did something worse, without checking they took some old steel plates from their magazine, and started to weld hulls, problem is nobody knew from where, when these plates were really made, and how good they are. This ended with so called micro cracks, in reality these cracks were so micro that when it was raining, inside there was water, or so I heard.

Turrets on the other hand, made by HSW company, that is also main system integrator, are made per requirements, and there are no problems with them. However HSW as system integrator needs to pay money to MoD due to not being able to manufacture Krabs on time, of course not their fault but OBRUM and Bumar.

So HSW got a green light from MoD to seek alternative, they found it in form of South Korean K9 chassis. They purchased whole license for production, but also right to modify chassis per their needs and to reexport it, so hopefully there won't be any more problems with Krabs. AFAIK first chassis is already in Poland and they are preparing to integrate it with turret.

Damien, what exactly was 2nd Cavalry Regiment doing there? Was this a result of the recent exercises held in Poland?

Yep, they were invited as our guests, besides cavalry with Strykers there were also paratroopers from US, and also some Canadian soldiers.

If any of our allies is actually in Poland at that time participating in excercises with our troops, they can expect to be invited to participate in parade... which is why it's damn bad US, UK and French armored units were not here at that time, imagine that besides our Leo2's and PT-91's there would be some M1A2's, Challenger 2's and Leclerc's. :D

There is a rumor tough that in town of Ciechanów, near Warsaw, in the old Polish Army barracks, Polish MoD and US made a deal there will be US armored battalion base there. So maybe next year. :D
