From StrategyPage; the Navy is trying to get LCS' out to do piracy patrol, as an 'intro' to combat ops. Of course, this is what the gold-plated cutter is best suited for.

LCS Goes Into The Danger Zone

"January 23, 2013: Last year the U.S. Navy has decided to put its new "Littoral Combat Ship" (LCS) into mass production. This year one of the three LCSs in service will get its first tour in a combat zone (counter-piracy duty around the Straits of Malacca). This ship, and others currently in service, will take turns serving six month tours, and will be based in Singapore."

LCS Goes Into The Danger Zone

Hunting pirates is about the only thing the LCS is good for. Its outgunned by anything with a decent sized cannon on it, much less anti-ship missiles.

8" isn't enough. We need cruisers with 12" guns like the Alaska class!

How hard would it be for the USN to get a proper frigate like many of the modern European designs. We probably don't even need Standard Missile capability, just ESSM.

Why stop there?

Pheh.... I heard .50-cal was adequate.

Yes, but can navalised F-15s mounting those .50s take off from the LCS?

The fella in the hat in the foreground is standing in a VERY unhealthy place!

Catching pirate boats when you can make 47 knots doesn't appear to be that hard.

If that was the case, than the largest navy in the area (The republic of singapore navy) would have caught all the pirates by now. You can't even tell a pirate boat from a regular boat until they pull up along side and start opening fire on you. All the technology on these LCS will not be of any use in differentiating pirate from regular fishing boat. And even after an LCS positively identifies a pirate vessel, what do they do, give chase? They better have a good angle, because its not hard for a pirate boat to slip back into sovereign waters of whatever country it operates from. The fact is the combined record for pirate catching by all the navies in the area is absymal. For the USN to think they can be successful right away is ridiculous.

More likely, the Navy knew the LCS would have a lot teething problems and based them in Singapore to escape the prying eye so the press. The press is tightly controlled in Singapore, and you can be sure the singapore govt. will muzzle any negative press regarding hull leaks, propulsion failures, etc. Good luck to the more vocal US press opponents of the LCS hoping to get visas to singapore to report on the teething problems.

Either that, or these ships are there with the real goal to spirit the ruling dictatorship out of the country when they lose the next election. After all, 40% of the ship is designed to be empty and the things are fast as hell. :D

Good point.

Even the LCS's vaunted anti-speedboat capability assumes an Iranian Navy "charge of the light brigade" and never discusses how many speedboats can hide behind an oil tanker . . . or just allow the LCS to chase them while dumping mines or lightweight torpedoes over the stern . . .

A least they will be babysat by a more experienced navy

Details, details,... the Hyper kewl ships will develop their own intelligence and will be able to identify the pirates through an advanced tattoo recognition program...

The best anti-pirate vessel the Malaysian Navy has is the MV Bunga Lima, a converted container ship that serves as a support vessel for Ops Fajr deployments to Somalia. It's innocuous, very spacious, has a large hangar and big derricks.

Its the best anti pirate vessel because pirates keep mistaking it for a soft target container vessel and attack it. Its like a honey trap for pirates, they attack the container ship and oops, the damn thing shoots back at them with lots of firepower. Fooled ya.

If that's the case, I guess bikers better not go deep sea fishing in the South China Sea anytime soon. They are liable to be mistaken for pirates and shot at. LOL

We must not allow a speedboat gap!

And a new medal, with precedence over the Silver star - the Shores-of-Tripoli-from-my-couch medal with W device (because a V it's not enough!)

Arrrrr Matey it's tough out there these days, for a pirate.....

I believe that roughly half of the ship is empty space, ready for mission modules. Not very high tech, but they can probably drop in a living quarters module for a company of Marines. That should help with the boarding party issue.
