Mr King Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 This was listed as a T26E3 Pershing that was taken out by a shot to the turret front (supposedly a 88mm) Elsdorf, Germany 1945

DogDodger Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 This was listed as a T26E3 Pershing that was taken out by a shot to the turret front (supposedly a 88mm) Elsdorf, Germany 1945 Yep. On 26 February 1945, this T26E3 (named "Fireball," which can be seen painted on the fender) had its turret silhouetted by a coal fire burning behind the tank. From ~100 yards, a Tiger Ausf.E hit the tank three times: one shell penetrated the coax MG port; a second struck the end of the gun tube, setting off the chambered round and destroying the gun tube; and a third ricocheted off the turret roof through the open cupola hatch. After repairs (including cannibalizing a 90 mm GMC M36's gun tube), Fireball was back in action by 7 March
shep854 Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 DogDodger, how many of the crew survived? From your description, it sounds like the turret was a very bad place to be.
DogDodger Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 Shep, the gunner and loader were killed when the first shell--the one through the MG port--spun around the inside of the turret.
shep854 Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Shep, the gunner and loader were killed when the first shell--the one through the MG port--spun around the inside of the turret. That's what I figured, though crazy things have happened that allowed crew to survive. Did the round go right around the TC?
DogDodger Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 I have no idea how he survived, or if he was even in the tank.
Mr King Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Any guesses as to what general the next US tank will be named after?
DKTanker Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 (edited) Any guesses as to what general the next US tank will be named after? My vote would be for General Donald Starry, the most influential US Army Armor officer of the 2nd half of the 20th C. My cynical self thinks it will be some PC steaming pile. Harold Jones Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 By the time procurement finishes gold plating the M1 replacement they'll cost so much per copy that they't end up christening a class leader and naming each one that gets made after battles or something.
Panzermann Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Custer, because it will be a overly successful project. Over budget, over time, missed delivery, overly gold plated...
DKTanker Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Oh, that was a blasphemy! Maybe Schwarzkopf? Schwartzkopf was a grunt, not a tanker.
DKTanker Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 The Powell would be one for diversity.Another grunt, cover up artist, and politician. Not a tanker.
Mr King Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Someone with a sick sense of humor needs to officially name something Gavin, preferably something wheeled. God it would be like Christmas, Easter, and 4th of July all mixed together to watch that melt down.
Corinthian Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 (edited) The BattleGuard remains my favourite RWS. It harmonizes well with the M1A2's CITV without being too bulky for the field of view of the commander's cupola. Oh my that looks sweet! The M2-and-Javelin (?) combo looks nice.... Edited October 27, 2014 by Corinthian
Panzermann Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 But I would Not like to see this combination mounted in front of the loader's hatch. If the rocket fires when the loader sticks his head out. and all the bother stuff bolted to turret roofs these days...
